Starring Deva Cassel, Laura Luchetti’s “The Beautiful Summer” (“La Bella Estate”) has bowed sales and a trailer, ahead of its world premiere at this week’s Locarno Festival.
In a first deal to go down for sales agent True Colours, Palace Films has swooped on distribution rights to Australia and New Zealand. Xenix Filmdistribution will release in Switzerland “The Beautiful Summer,” which is loosely based on Cesare Pavese’s novel.
“His vision is so contemporary. He speaks about adolescence, the time in your life when everything is possible. It’s a story of a simple girl trying to make it in the big city, forced into becoming a woman. It’s a story of every girl,” Luchetti told Variety.
In the film, set in Turin in 1938, hard-working Ginia (Yile Yara Vianello) is looking for an adventure. She finds Amelia (Deva Cassel), who models for painters and introduces her to a whole different world.

Netflix has released first-look images of limited series “The Leopard,” based on the classic Sicily-set novel by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa that marks the streamer’s most ambitious Italian original to date.
Production on the lavish historical tapestry with elements comparable to “Downton Abbey” or “The Crown” – and potential to make a global mark – is currently underway in the Sicilian cities of Palermo, Syracuse and Catania. The show is a modern take on the sensual Sicilian saga famously adapted into a film by Luchino Visconti starring Claudia Cardinale, Alain Delon and Burt Lancaster. The movie, now an Italian cinema classic, won the 1963 Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
Published posthumously in 1958, “The Leopard” chronicles the changes in Sicilian life and society during the 19th century unification of Italy, known as the Risorgimento. It became the top-selling novel in modern Italian literature of its day and was translated into more than 40 different languages.

Creative Team Talk Sky’s ‘Blocco 181,’ Which Mixes Multi-ethnic Milanese Crime and Three-Way Romance
Gangland warfare and a Romeo and Juliet romance with a twist are the main elements of Sky Studios’ first Italian in-house production ‘Blocco 181,’ which is set against the backdrop of a gritty multi-ethnic Milan that has never appeared on screen before.
The eight-episode show – which launches this week on Sky in the U.K. after making a splash in Italy – is lead-directed by London-based Italian director Giuseppe Capotondi, best known for art-heist thriller “The Burnt Orange Heresy” starring Mick Jagger as a shady art collector.
“It’s a dark fable combining crime, romance, sex, and coming-of-age elements,” said Capotondi who besides directing the series, also co-penned the “Blocco 181” screenplay. Capotondi added that, while rooted in reality, the show’s tone “is closer to a graphic novel than to the type of hyperrealistic series [like Gomorrah] that you can expect from Italy.”

Claes Bang has terrified audiences across with the world with his spirited portrayal of Count Dracula for the BBC. Now he’s moving closer to the present with his latest film The Burnt Orange Heresy in which he stars with Elizabeth Debicki and Donald Sutherland. Steven Goldman sat down with the actor to talk about his latest film and what’s next.
Claes Bang has got a thing for art – at least as far as the movies go.
The Danish actor first captured the global spotlight as a crisis-juggling museum curator in The Square, taking top honors in Cannes in 2017. Last year he was on the trail of Nazi-looted art in The Last Vermeer, which premiered at TIFF. This year, his focus shifts back to contemporary abstracts with the sexy neo-noir thriller, The Burnt Orange Heresy.

Sony Pictures UK has debuted a new trailer for ‘The Burnt Orange Heresy’ starring Elizabeth Debicki and Claes Bang.
Charming and ambitious art critic, James Figueras (Claes Bang), has fallen from grace. He spends his days in Milan lecturing witless tourists about art history. His only glimmer of hope is a newfound love interest, the enigmatic American, Berenice Hollis (Elizabeth Debicki). An opportunity strikes when he is contacted by wealthy art dealer Joseph Cassidy (Mick Jagger) who summons James to his villa on Lake Como and asks him to steal a painting from the legendary reclusive artist, Jerome Debney (Donald Sutherland). Soon, James’ greed and ambition get the better of him, and he finds himself caught in a web of his own making.
Directed by Giuseppe Capotondi, the film also stars Mick Jagger and Donald Sutherland.

Claes Bang plays a man who does something highly inconceivable and goes off the rails because of his decisions in Giuseppe Capotondi’s drama, “The Burnt Orange Heresy.” But the actor doesn’t necessarily think his character is a “psychopath or maniac.”
“I don’t think he knows at the beginning of the film what’s going to happen three days later,” Bang told TheWrap’s Beatrice Verhoeven at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival. “I don’t think he’s a psychopath or maniac in that sense. It’s sort of what happens that drives him where he ends up going and I think that’s far more interesting… With this script, it was not so much down to me having to come up with stuff for this to be real — it was really shooting the scenes as they were written.”

Who’s ready for a bit, no lots, of culture? No, well let’s sweeten the deal. Yes, you’ll be in the world of odd artists and their deep-pocketed patrons, but the paintings are on the walls of a swanky mansion over in Italy. Hmm, some refinement and a virtual “vacay”. And who are our guides? That’s where the romance sneaks in via a most photogenic pair of European rising stars. Oh, and they’re backed up by a veteran film actor (this is his seventh decade on screen) and an honest to gosh, no debate about it, rock and roll god. Somehow this quartet is connected by the piece known as The Burnt Orange Heresy.

‘Babyteeth.’
Universal Pictures’ dramedy The King of Staten Island continued its reign at Australian cinemas last weekend as ticket sales slumped, starved of new releases.
Given the depressed state of the market, Shannon Murphy’s Babyteeth, the bittersweet comedy adapted by Rita Kalnejais from her play, launched reasonably well on 46 screens, making $65,000.
The Universal release starring Eliza Scanlen, Toby Wallace, Ben Mendelsohn and Essie Davis registered the second highest per-screen average – $1,419 – among the top 10 titles, behind the market leader’s $1,766.
With 33 per cent of the nation’s cinemas closed and most that are still operating charging half price, the top 20 titles generated a mere $1.7 million, down 27 per cent on the previous frame, according to Numero.
The weekend takings were down 90 per cent on the same weekend last year, when The Lion King, Spider-Man: Far From Home, André Rieu’s Maastricht Concert and Toy Story 4 were raking in millions.

Colin Firth in ‘The Secret Garden.’
On the reasonable assumption that cinemas are trading in July, albeit with staggered seating, audiences can look forward to a raft of Hollywood films and, perhaps, several new Australian releases.
Distributors have started scheduling titles in an orderly fashion, avoiding a logjam of product, from early July until the end of the year and beyond.
Exhibitors expect that if the 4 square metre distancing rule applies, that will limit the average capacity to around 33 per cent, which would be viable for cinemas and distributors.
Executives on both sides of the fence are confident business will rebound quickly. “I don’t think it will take long for punters to return to cinemas; people are tired of the restrictions Covid-19 has placed on their lives and there is a desire to return to normalcy,” says Studiocanal CEO Elizabeth Trotman.

What a missed opportunity we have here. For two thirds of The Burnt Orange Heresy, this art world centered suspense film does a lot of things right. There’s quality acting, a sexy vibe, lovely settings, and a sense of foreboding doom that one can’t quite put their finger on. Then, in the third act, it all goes wrong. Characters begin acting completely randomly, ruining almost all of the goodwill generated by the first two acts. Now out in select theaters, this flick ends up being an interesting failure, when it was well on its way to being a small scale success. The movie is a drama, mixing suspense and thriller elements, all within the world of art, art criticism, and artists. Art critic James Figueras (Claes Bang) is lecturing in Italy when he meets American Berenice Hollis (Berenice Hollis). Drawn to his devilish charm, Berenice jumps into bed with him,...

James Figueras (Claes Bang) is an art critic so charmingly slick he can sell a tourist audience in Milan on a painting simply by making up stories about it. In attendance at his lecture is Berenice Hollis (Elizabeth Debicki), a vacationing teacher from Minnesota — or is she a seductive tower of blond ambition with a secret agenda? Given the laws of cinematic attraction, their coupling is as quick as it is inevitable. So it’s no surprise that filthy-rich art collector Joseph Cassidy (Mick Jagger) extends an invitation for both...

Knotty in the way mystery movies used to be, Giuseppe Capotondi’s neo-noir thriller “The Burnt Orange Heresy” slowly entraps an unsuspecting victim within its thorny plot and keeps the audience guessing — up to a point.
If we’re familiar enough with these stories, we might predict what darkness lies ahead for these characters. But even if the tale feels a little stale, a little dated, the electric performances between the three main leads — Claes Bang, Elizabeth Debicki and Donald Sutherland — restores its sense of mystery.
The movie opens on a dashing art critic practicing his presentation as he works out, gets dressed and packs his books to sell. James Figueras (Bang) eventually gives the performance to a group of aging tourists who watch him defend his noble profession with an impish smirk. James tricks and deceives his listeners with half-truths and whole-lies but doesn’t seem to have any...

, Giuseppe Capotondi’s “The Burnt Orange Heresy” is a movie about the value of art that offers little in the way of artistic value. What it does have — in spades — is Elizabeth Debicki swanning around the well-monied banks of Lake Como as a mysterious connoisseur whose sultry exterior may (or may not!) hide another meaning under its surface.
Beguiling even as the silly film around her struggles to square high-brow gloss with low-rent delight, the bird-like “Widows” actress manages to soar above the rest of the action without insisting the material is far beneath her; Mick Jagger’s cameo as a devious art dealer could only dream of painting such a distinct impression. “Never let a thing’s worth obscure its value,” someone cautions early on, but Debicki takes pleasure in denying us that chance. Whether playing a gold alien space queen or a simple girl from Duluth who gets...

Pleasure to Burn: Capotondi Returns with Entertaining Neo-Noir
Murder really can be turned into art, it seems, in Giuseppe Capotondi’s return to narrative filmmaking with The Burnt Orange Heresy, his first film in a decade since his well-received debut, 2009’s The Double Hour (which at one point was set to be re-made in English by Joshua Marston). Capotondi turns to something a bit more lavishly cosmopolitan in this thriller which explores the intersection of art, commerce, blackmail and dreams deferred with an exceptional international cast. The film closed the 2019 Venice Film Festival and while it’s enigmatic title isn’t likely to drive the masses to the art-house, the film (adapted by Scott B.…...

The 37th edition of Miami Dade College's Miami Film Festival returns to downtown Miami with more than 125 feature films, documentaries, and short films from 30 countries, screening March 6-15. This year's edition opens with The Burnt Orange Heresy (pictured), directed by Giuseppe Capotondi and starring Mick Jagger, Donald Sutherland, Elizabeth Debicki, and Claes Bang. It's the fifth screen adaptation of the late Miami noir novelist Charles Willeford; the festival will also screen a 35mm print of another Willeford adaptation, George Armitage's Miami Blues, starring Alec Baldwin and Jennifer Jason Leigh, to mark the film's 30th anniversary. The festival closes with Cristina Constantini and Kareem Tabsch's documentary Mucho Mucho Amor, about the late Puerto Rican astrologer Walter Mercado, a flamboyant figure who charmed many with his televised horoscopes....

There is a point in Giuseppe Capotondi’s film, “The Burnt Orange Heresy,” where the film turns from what seems to be a tale of a torrid romance between an American woman and an ambitious art critic into a thriller/heist film about priceless art. And that shift in tone and plot is perfectly shown in the new trailer for the film.

"Think of the splash it would make... No critic has spoken to this guy in over 50 years." Sony Classics has revealed an official trailer for the film The Burnt Orange Heresy, an adaptation of a classic novel about the art world written by Charles Willeford. This premiered at the Venice Film Festival last year at the end of the festival, a delightful surprise (here's my review). Claes Bang stars as an art critic who gets in over his head when he's invited by an eccentric collector to his villa near Lake Como, only to learn there's a long lost painter hiding out in the guest house. His affair with an American woman, played by Elizabeth Debicki, complicates things further. The eccentric cast includes Mick Jagger, Donald Sutherland, and Rosalind Halstead. This is another trailer that gives away too much, but I love this film and must support it anyway. Here's...

Above: JokerWas it really that big a surprise—for some even a sensation—that the main awards of the 76ª Mostra internazionale d'arte cinematografica di Venezia went to Todd Phillips' Joker (Golden Lion) and Roman Polański's An Officer and a Spy (Grand Jury Prize)? For weren't these the films most talked about before—and among the most widely discussed cum (mainly) celebrated during the festival proper? This was arguably one of the better jury decisions in years, a decision decidedly in favor of cinema as an art for and of the masses with the potential of making serious amounts of people ponder, maybe look differently at what they thought and believed (in) so far—though film did not have all the answers.Besides: This pair perfectly sums up the main themes and concerns addressed in the competition as well as some of the outstanding films to be found in the...

San Sebastian — While Donald Sutherland has never shied from speaking his mind, events of recent days have lent his voice an extra tremble of urgency.
“The attitude at the U.N. is bullshit,” said the Canadian actor, echoing the frustrations of climate activist Greta Thunberg that world leaders are not reacting with sufficient gravity to the crisis of climate change.
“I have children, I have grandchildren, and the world that I have left them, and am going to leave them, is not one they’ll be able to live in,” Sutherland said from the San Sebastian Film Festival, where the actor is promoting his latest film, “The Burnt Orange Heresy” and is due to receive the Donostia Award.
“[In China] individuals now have to pollinate flowers because there are no more bees. When you’re driving your car, there are no more bugs on your windscreen. We’ve lost 2.5 billion birds. That’s...

Sony Pictures Classics has nabbed the rights to “The Burnt Orange Heresy,” Variety has learned.
The indie label plans to release the film in 2020. The Italian-American thriller was directed by Giuseppe Capotondi and stars Claes Bang, Elizabeth Debicki, Mick Jagger and Donald Sutherland. Scott Smith adapted Charles Willeford’s novel of the same name, transporting the action from Florida to Italy’s Lake Como.
“The Burnt Orange Heresy” is set in the world of high art and has a Hitchcock-ian feel. The film follows a swindler (Bang) who sets his sights on obtaining a rare painting by the reclusive genius Jerome Debney (Sutherland). His path soon intersects with those of a fabulously wealthy art collector (Jagger) and an American teacher touring Europe (Debicki). In the midst of all this intrigue, he soon finds himself on a deadly collision course.

Mick Jagger was a good get for “Burnt Orange Heresy” producers in more ways than one. They knew the Rolling Stones frontman would raise awareness of the indie project — at the very least, there was sure to be curiosity about his first credited movie role since 2002’s “The Man From Elysian Fields” – but he also helped backers qualify for European subsidies.
And they were definitely trying to do that.
Producers had already changed the original Florida setting in Charles Willeford’s pulpy 1971 novel to Lake Como, Italy, lined up Giuseppe Capotondi to direct, and “The Square” star Claes Bang and European-Australian actress Elizabeth Debicki for key roles. Casting the British musician as a wealthy art collector of dubious morality further helped the production meet European quotas on top of Italian subsidies.

Mick Jagger and Donald Sutherland criticized the Trump administration today for wiping out environmental rules created to combat climate change.
The Rolling Stones frontman and the award-winning actor made the comments at the Venice Film Festival, while promoting their new thriller, The Burnt Orange Heresy.
“We’re in a very difficult situation at the moment, especially in the U.S., where all the environmental controls that were put in place, that perhaps were just about adequate say for the last ten years, are being rolled back by the current administration. So much so, that they’re all being wiped out,” Jagger said during a news conference for the film.
“The U.S., which should be the world leader in environmental control, has lost that and has decided to go the other way,” he added.
The rock legend also criticized British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who is currently embroiled in a divisive battle over Brexit.

Watching “The Burnt Orange Heresy,” you may find yourself wishing one of two things: that Claes Bang and Elizabeth Debicki had been around to make elegant little mystery capers with Alfred Hitchcock in his prime, or that Hitch were around today to direct this one, a marble-cool art-fraud thriller that begins lithely and sexily before, somewhat mystifyingly, it takes a terminal turn for the dour. The first film in ten years from Italian genre stylist Giuseppe Capotondi, who competed on the Lido in 2009 with his sharp, twisty neo-noir “The Double Hour,” this adaptation of Charles B. Willeford’s 1971 novel — about an art critic desperate to uncover a reclusive painter’s secret works at any cost — is considerably i, two actors who could sell you just about any Old Master knockoff.
