Zombie movies? Can’t shake a stick without knocking a minimum of 20 quality ones out of a tree. You want vampires? Tell me the decade and the type and I’ll give you recommendations to keep you going for weeks. Werewolves? Well, for some reason, the werewolf falls in with his other Universal monster counterparts The Mummy, Frankenstein, and the Creature from the Black Lagoon as creatures that should have a lot more entries come to mind. I’m not saying that there aren’t any, quite the contrary. I can tell you quite a few must-see werewolf movies that you all probably know but the list is not nearly as deep as the other monsters mentioned above. Late Phases (watch it Here), also known under the stupidly generic title of Night of the Wolf, does a lot of interesting things while being a thoroughly enjoyable and almost arthouse movie...

The Bloody Disgusting-powered Screambox is home to a variety of unique horror content, from originals and exclusives to cult classics and documentaries. With such a rapidly-growing library, there are many hidden gems waiting to be discovered.
Here are five recommendations you can stream on Screambox right now.
Night of the Demon
Not to be confused with the 1957 film of the same name (also on Screambox), 1980’s Night of the Demon is an unforgettable Bigfoot experience. It’s no surprise that the gory exploitation flick was prosecuted as a “video nasty” by the British Board of Film Classification upon its initial release. It’s best remembered for a scene in which Bigfoot rips off a guy’s manhood — and that’s not even the most outrageous death scene!
The cheesefest plays like an early slasher, but instead of a masked killer lurking in the woods, it’s a guy in a cheap gorilla costume.

Stars: Nick Damici, Ethan Embry, Tom Noonan, Tina Louise, Rutanya Alda, Caitlin O’Heaney, Lance Guest, Erin Cummings, Larry Fessenden | Written by Eric Stolze | Directed by Adrián García Bogliano
Nick Damici has been a familiar face in the horror genre for years now. Primarily working with writer/director Jim Mickle, on whose films he has also co-written, this gruff, large but still oddly charming presence has impressed before but he was never given a true lead part until this film. With Mickle uninvolved, although long-time cohort Larry Fessenden produces and pops up in a cameo role, Damici takes centre stage in Late Phases, a film with the wonderfully juicy premise of a blind ‘Nam veteran getting revenge on a werewolf after it kills his best friend.
It feels appropriate to base this review around Damici as he is the chugging motor which drives the film and the beating heart which actually makes you invest in it.

With the virtual edition of Fantastic Fest 2020 still underway, here’s a look at two more films from this year’s programming slate: The Stylist from Jill Gevargizian and The Boy Behind the Door, which was co-written and co-directed by Justin Powell and David Charbonier.
The Stylist: I was a fan of Jill Gevargizian’s short film The Stylist when it was making the rounds a few years back, so to see her finally have the opportunity to expand upon the initial concept from the short for her feature-length film debut, also entitled The Stylist, is pretty damn great, and I was left absolutely floored by the results. When people talk in the future about filmmakers who took the world by storm with their first movie during this era in horror, I guarantee that Gevargizian and The Stylist will undoubtedly be a part of that conversation for years to come.

On to Werewolf Weekend movie #2, Dark Sky Films release Late Phases. I hadn't received a dud from this company, for review yet, and Phases keeps that going. Written by Eric Stolze, and Directed by Adrian Garcia Bogliano, Late Phases tells the story of an Army Vet, Ambrose, who has went blind with time, after being injured in Vietnam. He has become hardened to life, and in his own way, looks forward to death. His son puts him in a retirement community, thinking it's best for everyone involved, until Ambrose realizes there's something very dark hiding in the community.

With Late Phases, filmmaker Adrian Garcia Bogliano pens a visual love letter to werewolf films, all while weaving a wonderfully nuanced story of an embittered and blind war veteran (Nick Damici) forced to fight a beastly killer preying on the seniors living in a quiet retirement community.
What it lacks in overt frills, Late Phases makes up for in compelling storytelling and wonderfully layered characters, courtesy of screenwriter Eric Stolze, who does an admirable job of making his werewolf tale a compelling allegory for the aging process and the idea of dying with dignity. Without a doubt, Late Phases is one of the finest lycanthrope films of the last 20 years and a shining example of great independent horror.

The idea of spending the last years of your life alone doesn’t seem appealing to most people. Such is not the case for Ambrose (Nick Damici). He’s a loner who enjoys the company of just his dog, but he’s also a blind veteran of war whose son Will (Ethan Embry) thinks he’s doing the right thing by moving him into a retirement community. Crescent Bay though has a dark secret that visits its residents once a month. Ambrose learns this the hard way on his first night when his service dog and next-door neighbor fall victim to a large and deadly beast. The cops do nothing to take care of the issue so Ambrose decides to take matters into his own hands. So begins a month long journey as Ambrose prepares to face the beast on the next full moon.

A long time in the making, Reach Me, from filmmaker/actor John Herzfeld brings ‘positive thinking’ and ‘self-help’ to the big screen. It stars a bevy of Herzfeld’s actor friends and friends of friends, including Sylvester Stallone, Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Connolly.
The title is one of a dozen or so newcomers opening in limited release this weekend. Music Box’s Happy Valley and Kino Lorber’s Monk With A Camera are among Friday’s debuting documentaries.
Happy Valley, named after the area where Pennsylvania State University is located, dives into the child sexual-abuse scandal that rocked Penn State, while Monk looks at an unlikely ascetic who gave up life in the fast lane.
Kino Lorber also is launching Iranian Western Vampire pic A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night, which it is releasing with Vice Films. The title, which was born out of a previous short film, debuted at Sundance in January.

“I feel like I’m dropping you off in prison,” Will tells his blind father Ambrose as he helps him move into his new home at the Crescent Bay retirement community. A friend of mine is fond of applying the phrase "a wolf in sheep's clothing" to genre films. The theory goes that a good genre flick should have a tried and true "A" genre suit of sheep's clothing, and a deeper and more thoughtful "B" concept at its core. As an example, Let the Right One In is presented in the sheep's clothing of a "vampire film," but the film is actually about isolation, the darkness of childhood, and longing for connection in a disconnected world. With that in mind, writer Eric Stolze and director Adrián García Bogliano deserve credit for setting out to make Late Phases more than just a werewolf flick. On the surface, the film is the story of one blind Vietnam...

Late Phases is a werewolf film from the minds of Adrián García Bogliano (Here Comes the Devil) and Eric Stolze (Under the Bed). In the film, a war veteran chooses a quiet community in which to retire. But, a hairy beast stalks the local residents, by moonlight. This hairy title is set to release in November and a full trailer for the film is hosted here. As well, the film stars Nick Damici, Lance Guest, Erin Cummings and Tom Noonan. A preview for the film is hosted here. The film is set in Crescent Bay. This quiet retirement community does not welcome veteran Ambrose (Damici), with open arms. Though, this aging war hero's fame rises when he battles creatures in the night. But, is Ambrose up to the challenge of fighting a whole pack of these blood-thirsty creatures? The trailer for Late Phases shows Ambrose gathering supplies for the fight.

‘Late Phases’ tells the story of Ambrose (Damici) a wounded war veteran, now blind who along with his guide dog is moving into a retirement community and about to begin his first night there. Upon arrival, he and his son (Embry) unload his things and at first appearance, the community seems like a wholesome and peaceful place. Even Ambrose’s neighbor is extremely friendly and welcoming, kindly welcoming him to his new home. While settling in for his first night, he begins to hear a commotion and what sounds like a possible attack next door and he tries to investigate. His guide dog (also clearly disturbed by something in the near vicinity) ends up confronting a huge beast (to us horror fans, quite obviously a werewolf) and after being severely injured, Ambrose is forced to put down his friend and guide. Soon he begins to question the goings on in...

While werewolves aren’t exactly my favorite horror monster, I still get excited about a properly crafted werewolf flick because they’re so hard to come by. My favorite recent howler dates all the way back to Neil Marshall’s Dog Soldiers, a 2002 military creature feature, but Adrián García Bogliano’s Late Phases begs for similar attention, finally filling the “hot dog down a hallway” sized void that movies like The Wolfman left open.
Taking cues from geriatric zombie film Cockneys Vs. Zombies, Under The Bed scribe Eric Stolze transforms grey haired grandparents into hairy grey wolfbeasts, as a rural senior citizen complex witness a slew of unsolved animal attacks, creating openings quicker than Death himself. A fun little indie horror flick, you’ll enjoy the hell out of one man’s fight to keep supernatural creatures off his lawn – preventing his own gruesome death.

Whenever it seems like the werewolf movie has been completely forgotten, we get a nice reminder that this immortal legend of horror cinema will always have its fair share of supporters. It was way back in 1981 when The Howling, Wolfen, and An American Werewolf in London hit the screens, and while there was a semi-resurgence with Ginger Snaps (2000), Dog Soldiers (2002), and (to a degree) The Wolfman (2010), we don't seem to get half-decent lycanthropic cinema all that frequently.
"Decent" seems a good way to describe Late Phases, the new werewolf feature from the admirably eclectic director Adrian Bogliano (Penumbra, Cold Sweat, and Here Comes the Devil are among his most recent films), because the flick has too many good intentions and legitimately strong assets to allow its narrative missteps to ruin the whole package. Put more simply: Late Phases has a more than a few "slow spots" and it has trouble...

When most horror-loving filmmakers "hearken back" to the great old 1980s, they do it a lot like Adam Green did in his broadly (and gorily) likable Hatchet trilogy: they remind the viewer what we (hopefully) love and remember from the horror movies we saw when we were younger. A lot of those movies were pretty darn silly, but we loved them all the same -- a sentiment that certainly works for children of any generation.
Then there are scrappy little indies like Under the Bed, which do all they can to pay homage to "kid-focused" thrillers like The Gate, Poltergeist, Silver Bullet, and Stand By Me. As directed by the prolific Steven Miller (The Aggression Scale, Silent Night, Automation Transfusion) and written by Eric Stolze, Under the Bed earns a lot of points for effort and execution -- especially on such a small budget -- and it has just enough...

*full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was provided by XLrator Media. Director: Steven C. Miller. Writer: Eric Stolze. Cast: Jonny Weston, Gattlin Griffith, Peter Holden, Musetta Vander, and Kelcie Stranahan. This film fan has seen each of Steven C. Miller's films. From the zombie flick Automaton Transfusion (2006) to the witchy Scream of the Banshee (2011), Miller's horror films have been varied, especially in quality. His latest is a creature feature titled Under the Bed. This film was developed from Eric Stolze's (I Heart Shakey) script. And, this film is underdeveloped on several levels. Filmed over the course of twelve days, with a minuscule budget, Under the Bed offers very little in the form of a cohesive story and any sense of a creature mythology. This viewer was surprised at how easily the plot for this film could be summed up. Basically, two brothers fight off a creature,...

Remember all those childhood nights you were convinced something sinister was hiding under your bed? No? Well don’t you worry, director Steven C. Miller has created a movie that will remind you of the horrors that go bump in the night. Of course we all know there isn’t really a boogeyman, it’s all in your imagination – right?
Under The Bed blends horror filmmaking meant to entice younger audiences with 80s style creature features, culminating in this childish yet hard-r rated monster flick. Steven C. Miller uses his monster to tease and taunt audiences with some grand reveal, but thankfully when his monster rears its ugly head, a film-ending spectacle commences full of gore, dismemberment, and grotesque practical effects work. Even though Steven admitted these types of special effects always take longer to shoot, he thinks the effort is always worth it on camera. I couldn’t agree more Steven,...

The real bogeyman is incomprehensible plotting in director Steven C. Miller's Under the Bed, which matches narrative incoherence with one of the most over-the-top portentous scores in horror-cinema history. Ryan Dodson's exaggerated musical accompaniment is all the more hilarious for being so ubiquitous, even during a first half in which nothing happens except a lot of yelling between back-from-exile teen Neal (Jonny Weston) and dad Terry (Peter Holden), who's still mad at Neal for lighting the fire that killed the boy's mom two years earlier. That tragedy, it turns out, was actually caused by the giant limping demon-monster-whatsit that lives under Neal's bed and also haunts his brother, Paulie (Gattlin Griffith), all for reasons never explicated by Eric Stolze's jumbled script...

Arriving in limited theatres July 19th and on Blu-ray/DVD July 30th is indie horror maverick Steven C. Miller's latest project, the super creepy and equally fun Under the Bed.
A modern horror fable for a new generation of creature lovers out there, Under the Bed, which is already available on VOD platforms everywhere, follows two brothers named Neal (Jonny Weston) and Paul (Gattlin Griffith), who are dealing with a monster lurking underneath their bed which comes out to terrorize them every night when the lights go out. Their parents aren't much help at all (of course), forcing Neal and Paul to defend themselves alone against the supernatural menace living beneath their bed.
Dread Central recently chatted with Miller about what inspired his kid-centric (but still fun for adults) horror project, more on the monster mythology we didn't get to see in Under the Bed, a tease of the...

What do you get when you mix the mystical fun of Joe Dante with the gross brutality of Wes Craven? If you asked me that question about a week ago, I would have been hard-pressed to find an example, but now that I’ve seen director Steven C. Miller’s latest release, I can instantly answer Under The Bed. Written by Eric Stolze, this fresh take on the boogeyman who hides under your bed carries itself in two very distinctive ways, mostly existing as a fantastical creep-fest featuring grabby monster hands and rooms filled with smoke – until a finale that morphs into a gore-filled creature feature. Miller’s film is creative, fun, full of brutally attractive practical effects, and an undeniably entertaining take on a story that’s been re-interpreted for years. Want to know what goes bump in the night? You’re about to find out.

While speaking with writer/director Adrián García Bogliano about his latest project, Here Comes the Devil, we also happened to hear more from the indie filmmaker about a new film on the horizon, Late Phases.
When asked about his upcoming directorial slate, Bogliano replied, "I have three or four films in development right now, but there's one that looks like it'll be shooting in the next few months.
