Whoopi Goldberg is looking back at how Patrick Swayze convinced her to take on her Oscar-winning role in 1990’s Ghost.
The actress told author Dave Karger in his new book 50 Oscar Nights, via People magazine, that she needed a bit of persuading before she decided to play psychic Oda Mae Brown in the Jerry Zucker-directed film.
“I get a phone call from my agent, Ron Meyer, who says, ‘Patrick Swayze has been hired for this movie. Patrick is not going to do this if you don’t do it. Can you make some time for him and the director to come up?’” Goldberg recalled.
The Egot winner added, “So they [Zucker and Swayze] flew in, I meet Patrick, and out of the blue, we’re old friends. … About 40 minutes go by and Patrick says, ‘Please do this [movie] with me.’ I was like, ‘Yeah, okay.’ And that’s how it happened.”

A favorite movie of the 1990s may be getting a remake by none other than "The Lost City" actor Channing Tatum. The 1990 film "Ghost," which originally starred Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, and Whoopi Goldberg, is apparently on the actor's radar, according to a January interview with Vanity Fair.
The revelation came during the interview as Tatum was making pottery with journalist Jessica Pressler, an obvious nod to the film's iconic romantic scene between Swayze and Moore. "Now I know why they put this in 'Ghost,'" the "Magic Mike" actor said as he molded clay on the pottery wheel. "This whole process is very, very sexual." Tatum went on to briefly and vaguely explain that his production company, Free Association, has obtained the the rights to "Ghost," and that he has plans on remaking the film with certain plotlines altered to be more modern.

1990's Ghost is probably most famous for making pottery wheels seem sexy, and for its performances, including those of Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore and an Oscar-winning Whoopi Goldberg. It's long been considered a cult favourite, but that doesn't necessarily make it remake/reboot proof, and Channing Tatum has plans to do just that.
Speaking in a new Vanity Fair profile to promote Magic Mike's Last Dance, Tatum admitted he and his creative partners have the rights to Ghost and are developing a new version.
"But we’re going to do something different. I think it needs to change a little bit," referring to some of the more problematic, stereotypical attitudes and portrayals of the original. He doesn't specify what needs to be altered, but it sounds like he's enthused about the idea of the new movie.

Channing Tatum has revealed that he has the rights to the classic 1990 romance Ghost from Paramount Pictures and plans to remake it.
His disclosure that his production company Free Association has “the rights to Ghost” came during an interview with Vanity Fair, conducted while the actor-producer was making pottery. “Now I know why they put [pottery-making] in Ghost,” he joked. “This whole process is very, very sexual.”
Tatum told Vanity Fair that he’ll play Patrick Swayze’s role in the new Ghost. “But we’re going to do something different,” he said, alluding to certain problematic elements in the storytelling of the original film. There could be a “Ghost” remake on the way.
Channing Tatum revealed he might be starring in a new version of the Oscar-winning 1990 flick, which starred the late Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore as lead characters Sam Wheat and Molly Jensen.
The actor told Vanity Fair his production company, Free Association, has the rights to the classic.
Admitting they’re trying to pull together a remake, Tatum shared, “We actually have the rights. Yeah, we have the rights to ‘Ghost!'”
He added, “But we’re going to do something different. I think it needs to change a little bit,” sharing how he might be starring as Swayze’s character.
Tatum insisted that, like many other movies of its day, “Ghost” contained some problematic stereotypes.

I can't believe that nobody has ever done this before, a "Ghostbusters" parody in which the boys zap and trap "good" apparitions that weren't haunting or terrorizes anyone. In this case, a man's dead wife and little daughter. The concept seems too obvious. But I like that this Funny or Die exclusive, directed by "Wet Hot American Summer" cinematographer Ben Weinstein and starring the comedy group Chubby Skinny Kids, doesn't go for the easy movie mash-up route. This isn't "Ghostbusters" meets "Ghost Dad." They don't go after Sam Wheat from "Ghost" or--oh yeah, "Family Guy" already did that gag. Okay,…...

Most ghosts in film and television are dickholes. Let's face it -- they have unfinished business which makes them rather unpleasant. Like that Poltergeist fuckstump? Rolling around with that evil clown puppet bastard, fucking up all our drinking by sending worm monsters into Coach, fucking with the television reception. Not a ball of laughs.
Yet, there have been a rare few ghosts that have crossed our screens that would probably be a hoot at a Halloween party. They like to drink, maybe cause a little trouble, but they seem like they'd be pretty fucking cool to have a glass of Ecto-Cooler and vodka punch. Here's my guest list for the party of the damned.
Phantom Dennis -- "Angel"
He's not much of a talker, but he'd make sure the trash got moved and the drinks were full. The moody poltergeist might even invite his roommate Charisma Carpenter along, but don't get too close,...

Patrick Swayze was a charming cinematic rogue who starred as Sam Wheat in the romantic fantasy Ghost (1990). He portrayed the murdered lover of Demi Moore, who was able to communicate with his wife through a psychic, played by Whoopi Goldberg in an Oscar-winning performance.
Swayze was born in Houston, Texas, on April 18, 1952. His mother was choreographer Patsy Swayze, and Patrick trained as a dancer in the early 1970s. He made his film debut in the roller-disco flick Skatetown, U.S.A. in 1979.
Swayze earned honorary membership in `the Brat Pack’ with his role as Rob Lowe and C. Thomas Howell’s older brother in the 1983 film The Outsiders. He starred as Jed Eckert, leader of the Wolverines, the young freedom fighters who battled Soviet invaders in John Milius’ 1984 Cold War classic Red Dawn.

Call them "cult classics." "Guilty pleasures." "Comfort movies." We all have a mental rolodex of flicks that may not be terribly popular but, for one reason or another, they resonate in a very special way. Maybe you saw it at the right moment. Maybe you just see gold where everyone else sees feces. Whatever the case, these are the special favorites that you keep stashed away for sick days. Here are some of ours.
From "Road House" to "Point Break," there's no shortage of highly watchable Patrick Swayze films on display, but the actor's most poignant work -- particularly given recent events -- is undoubtedly "Ghost," the story of a man who had to die to learn about life.

The death of Patrick Swayze from pancreatic cancer, aged 57, closed the book on an Eighties icon. Ed Whitfield stands on a rain swept beach, watches the waves break and knows that although he’s not coming back, his place in movie lore is secure.
For millions of women of a certain age, Patrick Swayze was the Eighties. For a time in the period 1987-91, the bountiful years of his career, his indelible mark on hormonally doped teenage girls was indisputable. Movie stardom of this kind is not dissimilar to first love, though the difference is marked for the rest of us. Whereas mere men can and do retrospectively tarnish their reputation in the mind’s of those first girlfriends by virtue of being emotionally retarded, sexually disappointing and selfish, men like Swayze would always be above such mediocrity. He’d never be an embarrassment to those that remembered Johnny Castle...

Patrick Swayze died yesterday after a battle with pancreatic cancer at the age of fifty seven. But we all know that actors live on in their work, frozen forever at different stages of their lives and their careers. Some of them, like Swayze, are imprinted on our minds in roles that make them larger than life. That said, we've selected a few of Swayze's most memorable roles... roles that will live on forever. Dirty Dancing First and foremost is Swayze as Johnny Castle in 1987’s Dirty Dancing. The role of the guy from the wrong side of the tracks who finds respect and love as a Catskill resort dance instructor and part time lothario put Swayze on the map. The bad boy with the heart of gold who wins the heart of the doctor’s daughter, Baby, made many people sit up and take notice of an actor who’d been working since 1979. Swayze showed off his...

We're sad to report that Patrick Swayze has died at the age of 57 from the pancreatic cancer he announced to the world two years ago. After playing Danny in a Broadway run of Grease, Swayze first came to widespread notice in the early '80s in the well regarded TV mini-series North and South, and as a member of the so-called Brat Pack, with roles in The Outsiders and Red Dawn. But it was Dirty Dancing in 1987 that made him a household name, allowing him to put his classical training as a dancer to good use as Jennifer Gray's heartthrob dance instructor Johnny Castle. Roles of varying quality followed (best of which was the glorious tosh that is Road House) until the 1990 smash hit supernatural romance Ghost, where he played the deceased Sam Wheat to Demi Moore's Molly Jensen and Whoopi Goldberg's medium Oda Mae Brown. The following...

In his roles as "Bodhi," or "Sam Wheat" or "Johnny Castle," Patrick Swayze always captivated audiences with his good looks and great acting skills. It deeply saddens us to find out that the famed actor lost his battle with pancreatic cancer today and passed away at the young age of 57. Swayze had been in Hollywood for almost a decade when Dirty Dancing unexpectedly made him a megastar and household name. Several years later, he had his biggest hit starring in the movie Ghost with Demi Moore and Whoopie Goldberg. But his career spanned many movies and many fans will always remember him for his roles in The Outsiders, Point Break, Road House and Red Dawn. He recently starred in the gritty A&E drama "The Beast," playing FBI agent Charles Barker. Swayze had already filmed the pilot when being diagnosed with the deadly Stage IV pancreatic cancer. He went public...

Johnny Castle. Sam Wheat. Fighter. Patrick Swayze, the movie star whose iconic roles in Dirty Dancing and Ghost transcended and the man whose perseverance in the face of advanced cancer inspired, died today in Los Angeles. He was 57. "One thing I'm not gonna do is chase staying alive," Swayze told Barbara Walters in January. "You spend so much time chasing staying alive, you won't live." At the time, Swayze guessed he had two more years to live. Swayze was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in early 2008. Despite the gloom and doom of initial tabloid reports, Swayze went on to star in the A&E cop drama The Beast. "I'm a miracle, dude. I don't...
