The official trailer for Roku’s The Spiderwick Chronicles shows off much more of the series’ fantasy world and of Christian Slater as an ogre who would prefer a world without humans. The two-minute trailer also introduces the Grace family and how moving into the Spiderwick Estate opens up their eyes to the existence of mythical creatures.
In addition to Christian Slater as Mulgarath, season one stars Joy Bryant as Helen Grace, Noah Cottrell as Simon Grace, Lyon Daniels as Jared Grace, and Mychala Lee as Mallory Grace. Jack Dylan Grazer provides the voice of Thimbletack.
“The Grace family moves from Brooklyn, New York, to their ancestral home in Henson, Michigan, the Spiderwick Estate. Helen makes the move with her 15-year-old fraternal twin boys, Jared and Simon, and her older daughter, Mallory,” reads Roku’s synopsis. “Shortly after moving to the Spiderwick Estate Jared discovers a boggart and realizes that magical creatures are real!

Exclusive: Percy Jackson and the Olympians is firing on all cylinders for Disney+.
The premiere episode of the streamer’s original series, based on the books by Rick Riordan, has now amassed 26.2M views in its first three weeks on Disney+ and Hulu, according to the company. That’s double the viewership it managed in its first week.
Disney says that all five available episodes have surpassed 10M views in their first week on the platform, which seems to stay in line with the premiere’s initial viewership, though some decline is very usual and expected as the season progresses.
The company defines a view as hours viewed divided by runtime, similar to Netflix’s calculation.
Nielsen data for Percy Jackson and the Olympians could be available as early as Thursday, if the first two episodes manage to make it into the streaming top 10 in their first week on the service.

In another sign of Disney+ and Hulu’s deepening ties, the first episode of Disney+’s high profile new original series Percy Jackson and the Olympians will launch on Hulu, concurrent to the series’ two-episode premiere on Disney+ Dec. 20. The announcement was made by Percy Jackson author Rick Riordan at the series’ premiere in New York Wednesday night.
The first episode will be available on Hulu through Jan. 31 while new episodes of Percy Jackson will be released weekly on Disney+.
Disney used a similar strategy recently with Disney+’s Star Wars series Andor, whose two-episode premiere was also made available on Hulu, and with the Disney+ original series Goosebumps, whose entire first season was shared on both streamers.
The moves come as Disney just rolled out a beta version of the “one-app experience,” combining Hulu — now fully owned — and Disney+ for bundle subscribers. The merged app will officially launch in March.

“Percy Jackson and the Olympians,” the Disney+ series based on the book series of the same name, will concurrently launch on Hulu on Dec. 20.

A storm is brewing, and this one could usher in the end of times.
Disney+ has released a new trailer for Percy Jackson and the Olympians, and there's a good chance it will be the streaming service's best series this year.
With the Marvel Cinematic Universe imploding on both the big screen and on streaming, and the tepid response to The Mandalorian Season 3, Disney+ is betting on Percy Jackson and the Olympians.
In the past, Disney+ hasn't put its marketing muscle behind projects outside the MCU and Star Wars universe.
If the series manages to break through, it will probably urge the streaming service to take more significant risks.
Adapting Rick Riordan's bestselling book series for the small screen already looks to be paying off.
While the two big-screen adaptations were criticized, everything we see for Percy Jackson and the Olympians looks like a natural next step for the franchise.

Roku has moved in and saved The Spiderwick Chronicles starring Christian Slater and Joy Bryant and based on Tony Diterlizzi and Holly Black’s popular book series. In August 2023, Disney+ dropped The Spiderwick Chronicles after the eight-episode season had wrapped filming.
The cancellation prompted Paramount Television Studios and 20th Television to shop the series elsewhere, with Roku snatching up the U.S. rights. Fans of the bestselling books can now expect an early 2024 premiere on The Roku Channel.
“It is an honor to bring The Spiderwick Chronicles, a spectacular adventure-filled story led by the incredible Christian Slater and Joy Bryant, exclusively to The Roku Channel,” stated Brian Tannenbaum, Head of Originals, Roku Media. “We cannot wait to introduce this exquisitely crafted series, imagined by a world-class creative team, to millions of streamers.”

One streaming service's trash is another's treasure. To that end, Roku has announced that it has nabbed the rights to "The Spiderwick Chronicles" TV series, which had previously been in the works at Disney+. And when we say in the works, we mean that the entire eight-episode series had already been filmed. Yet, Disney decided not to release it anyhow, as we learned back in August. But the show will see the light of day after all.
The adaptation of the acclaimed book series by Tony Diterlizzi and Holly Black will now be a Roku Original series that will debut on The Roku Channel in early 2024. No specific release date has been announced yet but expect more information, including a trailer, sooner rather than later. It's easy to see why Disney would have pursued this in the first place as the YA fantasy adventure novels are quite popular, with 20 million copies sold.

“The Spiderwick Chronicles” series adaptation has found a new home at Roku.
The series was originally set up at Disney+ before the streamer decided to scrap it in August. The eight-episode show is based on the hit book series of the same name by Tony Diterlizzi and Holly Black. It will debut on The Roku Channel in early 2024.
The official description of the show states it is a “coming-of-age story of the Grace Family, as they move from New York to Michigan and into their family’s ancestral home. Upon arrival, the family not only uncovers mysteries hidden inside their great grandfather’s Spiderwick Estate, but also discovers a secret, fantastical world around them.”
As previously announced, the cast includes: Joy Bryant as Helen Grace, Noah Cottrell as Simon Grace, Lyon Daniels as Jared Grace, Mychala Lee as Mallory Grace, Jack Dylan Grazer as the voice of Thimbletack, and Christian Slater as Mulgarath.

Roku just scored a completed, anticipated adaptation of a beloved book series that will air in early 2024. The streaming platform announced on Tuesday that it has acquired “The Spiderwick Chronicles” nearly two months after the show was dropped by Disney+ as part of a cost-saving measure.

The eight-episode first season was produced by Paramount Television Studios and 20th Television to initially stream on Disney+, but the streamer decided not to move forward with its plans after the first season was completed. And their loss is Roku’s gain.

Now might be the perfect time to re-read Rick Riordan’s “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” books before the adaptation arrives on Disney+ at the end of the year. For this show, only the main foundation series (and maybe just the first book) are required reading before Camp Halfblood comes to life on the small screen.
The first two episodes of “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” arrive December 20 on the streamer, followed one new episode per week. Christmas will be to “Percy Jackson” fans as Thanksgiving will be to “Hunger Games” fans, with “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” film adaptation arriving in theaters November 17. We’re here for the YA literary revival!
But back to Greek gods, demigods and monsters — here’s everything we know about the upcoming “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” Disney+ series:

After nearly 15 years, “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” author Rick Riordan is out with a new book centered on the original core trio of Percy, Annabeth and Grover, “Percy Jackson and the Olympians: Chalice of the Gods.” But, will this new set of adventures make it into the upcoming Disney+ series? Well, for Riordan, it’s too soon to say — but he’s not opposed to it.

Based on the best-selling book series by author Rick Riordan, “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” follows a 12-year-old modern demigod, Percy Jackson, who learns that he has godly powers because his father is Poseidon, Greek god of the sea. The first two episodes of the eight-episode first season premieres Dec. 20 on Disney+.
“My name is Percy Jackson,” Scobell’s voiceover introduces his character at the beginning of the clip. “Am I a troubled kid? Yeah, you could say that.”
As a cover of Vance Joy’s “Riptide” sets the scene (iconic because Riptide is the name of Percy’s sword), Scobell goes on to describe what troubles his character. For Percy, letters swim around on the page, but he later learns that he has dyslexia because the...

Disney+ has decided not to pick up a completed TV series adaptation of the imaginative The Spiderwick Chronicles book series, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
The six-episode series from Paramount Television Studios and 20th Television, a division of Disney, is being shopped to other possible buyers.
Disney touted the adaptation of the books of the same name by Tony Diterlizzi and Holly Black as “a modern coming-of-age story combined with fantasy adventure” when the project was first unveiled in Nov. 2021, with Jack Dylan Grazer, Joy Bryant, Mychala Lee, Christian Slater, Lyon Daniels and Noah Cottrell set for the ensemble cast and Kat Coiro to direct two episodes.
The popular children’s book series The Spiderwick Chronicles — which has sold more than 10 million copies worldwide and has been translated into 32 languages — was adapted into a 2008 Paramount movie.

Exclusive: Amid a focus on content curation and Disney-owned IP, Disney+ is not proceeding with The Spiderwick Chronicles, its live-action series adaptation of the popular children’s fantasy books, Deadline has learned.
The eight-episode series, from Paramount Television Studios and 20th Television, has been completed. It is currently being shopped by Paramount to other potential buyers.
The decision comes as Disney — along with other media companies — have been reevaluating their streaming strategies by cutting programming costs with a renewed focus on profitability. It is part of the major content write-off announced by Disney in May, I hear.

In 2010, 20th Century Fox brought to life the first film in the Percy Jackson series, Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief starring Logan Lerman. Fox would bring over the director of the early Harry Potter films, Chris Columbus, to helm the start of this new franchise. The Lightning Thief would go on to become a hit as it grossed $226.4 million worldwide with a production budget of $95 million. The sequel, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, also became a modest hit and a third film, The Titan’s Curse, was set to be the next installment, but it never manifested.
