The pilot who died Monday in a small plane crash in Sylmar has been identified as Scott Watson, a research and development executive at Walt Disney Imagineering.
Watson was described as the quintessential imagineer: someone who was both creative and technically savvy. Those who worked with him said he left his mark on scores of Disney’s theme park attractions, from Indiana Jones to Soarin’ Over The World to the upcoming Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge.
“He had a million ideas and was just a brilliant person to be around,” said Phil Lelyveld, who worked on projects with Watson over his 10-year tenure at Disney and now runs the Immersive Media Program at the USC’s Entertainment Technology Center, a think tank within the school of Cinematic Arts. “He came up with a number of novel ideas for the theme parks and other things in Disney, but he also had...

The independent cinema guru arrives at the company as head of movies distribution and marketing while former ABC digital executive Albert Cheng is named COO.
Berney most recently served as CEO at Picturehouse, a company he brought back to life in 2013 from the ashes of the specialty label he helped launch with New Line and Warner Bros back in 2005.

Netflix will try to break the TV industry’s stranglehold on Emmy Awards this Sunday, and if you think the networks are happy about the red envelope’s success — think again. During two different panels at a USC tech conference on Wednesday, network executives downplayed Netflix’s disruption of the television industry. First up was ABC exec VP Albert Cheng, who said that Netflix’s impact is restricted to a specific kind of show — those on HBO or AMC. “What Netflix has done is specific to serial episodics,” Cheng told moderator David Cohen at the university’s Silicon Beach conference.

On Oscar day it will bring you onto the red carpet with access to live video streams of cameras placed at numerous locations along the most famous press line in Hollywood. During the ceremony viewers can virtually go backstage to watch recipients after they accept their statues. And the voyeuristic fun continues at the Governor's Ball following the telecast.

In a shift from its usual hyper-exclusivity, this year's Oscars are focusing on accessibility. For the 83rd Academy Awards on February 27, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has unveiled its latest marketing campaign, You're Invited, which for the first time welcomes the public to get behind the scenes with an all-access coverage live streaming event. Anne Hathaway and James Franco, the hosts for this year's show, have put together some catchy promos for the You're Invited campaign, including a Rocky-esque training montage that features Franco saving Hathaway from a wardrobe malfunction—an apt reference considering the ABC broadcast is the second most-watched TV event after the Super Bowl. The goal is to make the Academy Awards more inviting for younger audiences. For the first time, Oscar.com will offer a peek behind the scenes with an ambitious live streaming show spanning the red carpet to the control room...
