Stuck in what feels like a Terrence Malick post-production purgatory abyss, Hong Kong filmmaker Flora Lau‘s Luz has been a yearly no-show since 2019 and we still have zero clue as to the status of this project. Having preemed her debut film Bends in 2013 in the Un Certain Regard section, we are now at the decade between projects point here. A France-Chinese co-production, the highly anticipated sophomore project has Isabelle Huppert toplining with Sandrine Pinna and Xiaodong Guo as supporting players. To help young filmmakers build a long-term sustainable career and to meet the needs of an increasingly diversified audience culture and film industry, the Hong Kong Arts Centre (Hkac) sees a pertinent need to assist filmmakers to expand their professional and personal horizons, enrich their crafts, network and get recognised on local and international levels.

The new home of the London Film School has secured its first tranche of funding from Creative Skillset.
The London Film School has secured a significant award from Creative Skillset towards its capital campaign for the relocation to the Barbican Centre.

Bends, the first full-length film from Flora Lau, observes a dreamy Hong Kong through the eyes of a wealthy, middle-aged kept woman Anna (Carina Lau), and her young, blue-collar driver (Chen Kun). Minutes into the film, shortly after Anna sips champagne as the hostess of a dinner party, and declares "look at me, I'm so free" as a testimonial for sending your children to boarding school, her husband and source of income disappears. What's both mysterious and fascinating about the film is that Anna never reports his absence to the police, nor seems worried for him. She knows, it seems, that he has deserted her and that the financial well will soon dry up. Reacting, or non-reacting, with denial, annoyance and bewilderment, Carina Lau...

Among the 25 plus selected films that make up the programme, we’ve got a handful of U.S. independent films in the likes of Mark Phinney’s Fat, a pair of Us in Progress Paris projects in Aron Gaudet and Gita Pullapilly’s Beneath The Harvest Sky and Tommy Oliver’s 1982, while a newbie filmmaker part of the clan in Gia Coppola makes the trip from Venice Film Festival’s Horizon section to Toronto with the book to film adapation of James Franco Palo Alto (see pic above). Also from Venice, we have the Venice Days included Bethlehem, from Israeli helmer Yuval Adler and an item that...

Bends, the feature debut from writer-director Flora Lau, isn’t a film that, with its potent framework of famial dissaray, should struggle to engage on an emotional level. Yet this slight, deliberate tale of strained families keeps the audience at a distance, making it a curiously uninvolving sit that rarely engages on even the most basic level. A story revolving around two families which become ever more intertwined, the first half of this equation is Anna Li (Carina Lau), a housewife who has married into money, and when her businessman husband is away, she kills time by lunching around Hong Kong with her friends. Driving her from place to place is Fai (Chen Kun), a lower-class sort living across the border in Shenzhen, and almost simultaneously the pair’s troubles seem to coincide; Anna’s husband suddenly disppears without a trace, while the urgency for Fai to get his pregnant wife into a Hong Kong hospital — while...

Bends [Guo Jie] (Flora Lau, Hong Kong)
Un Certain Regard
Above: Carina Lau in Bends.
The narrative potential of the "driver-boss" couple has been used many times either to describe class relationships and conflicts or to redesign the part of the "commenting choir" by placing it behind the hero. In Flora Lau's first film, the relationships between Anna Lau (Carina Lau) and her chauffeur Ah Hui (Chen Kun) materialize social differences, but the story puts this classical pattern in motion through a third term: a border.
Anna lives in Hong Kong, the wife of a wealthy businessman, only busy with her socialite circles, as goes with the status. Ah Hui is a Hong Kong citizen but his wife is from Shenzhen in the Canton province, a mere 18 kilometers from Hong Kong. She is expecting a second child, and all of Ah Hui efforts are about making her give birth in Hk,...

2013′s Un Certain Regard section carries a whopping five first time feature filmmakers that’ll be measuring themselves up against auteur cinema heavyweights. While we nailed predictions for Alain Guiraudie’s L’inconnu du Lac, Rebecca Zlotowski’s Grand Central and the more international flavored title of the Sundance hit, Fruitvale Station by Ryan Coogler, we didn’t see major players such as S21: The Khmer Rouge Death Machine director Rithy Panh, or Paradise Now‘s Hany Abu-Assad (who brings us the first fully-financed film to come out of the Palestinian cinema industry) or Mohammad Rasoulof from Goodbye fame (brings us what is surely an aptly titled film in Anonymous) in the horizons.
As Nicholas mentioned yesterday, this would be a year of the women filmmakers (by Cannes standards) – six of them find themselves in the Un Certain Regard category. Sofia Coppola is joined by the baffling inclusion of...

This morning in Paris, the official competition lineup for the 66th Cannes Film Festival was announced. Steven Soderbergh ("Behind The Candelabra"), Paolo Sorrentino ("La Grande Bellezza"), James Gray ("The Immigrant"), Joel and Ethan Coen ("Inside Llewyn Davis"), Alexander Payne ("Nebraska"), Nicolas Winding Refn ("Only God Forgives"), Francois Ozon ("Jeune Et Jolie"), Asghar Farhadi ("The Past"), Roman Polanski ("Venus in Fur") and Takashi Miike ("Wara No Tate") will all have films screening in competition. They make for a very male-centric group (Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi is the only woman with a film in competition), despite all the criticism last year for an equally male-dominant lineup. Oddly, new films from Sofia Coppola and Claire Denis -- two of the most notable female directors living -- were both selected for the Un Certain Regard program instead of official competition (quite a few women are Un Certain Regard, including Flora Lau's "Bends," Rebecca Zlotowski's.

With less than a month to go before the festival kicks off out in France, the official line-up has finally been unveiled for this year’s 66th Cannes Film Festival.
The festival is, of course, one of the most prominent events of the year for the industry, with a handful of films launching their status as strong awards contenders out on the Croisette.
Last year, it was Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom, Michael Haneke’s Amour, Thomas Vinterberg’s The Hunt, Benh Zeitlin’s Beasts of the Southern Wild. The year before that, it was Michael Hazanavicius’ The Artist, Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life, Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive, and Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris.
This year, Baz Luhrmann’s highly anticipated The Great Gatsby has been chosen as the Opening Night Film for Cannes, following its theatrical release in the Us the previous weekend. And bookending...

This morning the official 2013 Cannes Film Festival line-up was announced from Paris, France. The committee saw 1,858 films submitted this year and while additional titles will continue to be announced, this morning we got the full Competition and Un Certain Regard lineup and it looks amazing so far. Among the films announced In Competition so far, many were expected including Nicolas Winding Refn's Only God Forgives, Steven Soderbergh's Behind the Candelabra, Roman Polanski's Venus in Fur, Asghar Farhadi's The Past and Joel and Ethan Coen's Inside Llewyn Davis. Additionally James Gray's once titled Lowlife starring Marion Cotillard, Joaquin Phoenix and Jeremy Renner will play, but under the name The Immigrant and Takashi Miike's cop thriller Wara No Tate (Straw Shield) has also made the competition list. However, the biggest "surprise" is the inclusion of Alexander Payne's black-and-white film Nebraska, which is sure to be a big attention getter,...
