Feature debut of Arvin Chen, “Au Revoir Taipei” may have very little to do with anything France, but still won the Netpac Award at the 2010 Berlin International Film Festival, among a number of other awards around the world, while also being a commercial success in Taiwan.

L.O.R.D.: Legend of the Ravaging Dynasties
As China steps into the 3D animation and sci-fi fantasy genre, L.O.R.D.: Legends of Ravaging Dynasties aims to make a strong impression.
Based on a novel of the same title by Guo Jingming, the film spotlights a magical land called Odin which is separated into four counties – water, fire, wind, and earth. In each county lives a group of soul masters who protect the land with their powers from others seeking more power and domination.
L.O.R.D. is being touted as China’s most ambitious film project to date. Not only will it be the country’s first motion capture animation film (the entire movie is done in CGI) and first Western fantasy film, being handled mainly by Original Force with its CEO Harley Zhao personally supervising the animation. Joining the growing trend of Chinese companies seeking out a role in the movie business, Internet giant Youku is launching Heyi Film. A wholly owned film production subsidiary, it will make films “to the tastes of the Chinese audience” and “improve film marketing and distribution,” Tech in Asia reported. Heyi is eyeing major theatrical releases and helping online talent branch out. Among the first projects are Bad Sister, starring Ivy Chen; Vacation In Paris, starring Amber Kuo and Louis Koo; and The Master, a co-production with Beijing Century Partner Culture and Media. There’s also a plan to transfer popular web series Yes Boss! and Miss Puff, Tia says. Alibaba is the most recent Chinese company to add film production to its portfolio. However, a red flag was raised over its $804M acquisition of ChinaVision Media Group when the company said it had discovered suspicious accounting and suspended its shares...

“Tiny Times” has been somewhat of a phenomenon over in China, originating as a trilogy of extremely popular novels from writer Guo Jingming, first published back in 2008 and following the experiences of a group of four female friends in Shanghai. Guo himself now brings the romance and drama of his books to the screen, serving as writer, director and narrator on the adaptations, perhaps marking the series as some kind of exercise in commercially minded auteurship. Despite a decidedly mixed reception from the critics and members of the public, the first instalment was a massive hit at the Chinese box office, which resulted in the release of its sequel being pushed forward to cash in on its considerable success. The film revolves around four friends at university in Shanghai – supposed ‘ordinary girl’ Lin Xiao (Mini Yang, “The Bullet Vanishes”), the wealthy and business-minded Lily (Amber Kuo, “Au Revoir Taipei”), arty Nan Xiang (Haden Kuo,...

The danger of making a light and fluffy caper movie is the risk you end up with a film so insubstantial it threatens to float away leaving nothing behind. Arvin Chen's Au Revoir, Taipei wants to be a charming little confection, the kind of matinee entertainment where nothing really bad ever happens and the audience remains glued to the screen from beginning to end, but despite some gorgeous production values and one or two moments of cinematic flair the whole is far too short and too scattershot to ever really gel.

Specialty film festivals can pop up in the most unlikely of places. While the the film community thinks of Dallas as a poor second cousin to Austin (not without good reason), local residents, including myself, treasure and champion the events that bring diversity to a movie-going scene too often dominated by Hollywood product. And so Friday night was a mob scene in the lobby of Landmark's Magnolia Theater as the Asian Film Festival of Dallas opened its ninth edition.
Now, to be fair, the Magnolia is often jammed up on a weekend night: the lobby is small! Yet I'm told that the official opening night film, Arvin Chen's Au Revoir Taipei, filled the room; a very decent crowd (myself included) then filed in to witness Wong Jing's I Corrupt All Cops (the best title of the year), and the midnight showing of Japanese splatter pic Robogeisha sold out,...

Showing on July 23 at 7:00 p.m. at the Landmark Magnolia in Dallas, as part of the Asian Film Festival of Dallas.
If you could blend awkward relationships, quirky humor, and upbeat guitar-and-fiddle music with stunning shots of urban Taiwan, you'd get a taste of what Au revoir Taipei is all about. As a film without a clear-cut genre (I'd say indie-romantic-comedy with a splash of crime), you wouldn't expect it to be so intriguing and lighthearted at the same time. But first-time director Arvin Chen took risks, and they definitely paid off.
The script follows the lovesick Kai (Jack Yao), who is determined to learn French and win back the affection of his Paris-bound girlfriend. As he studies every night, he attracts the attention of a bookstore employee, Susie (Amber Kuo), who attempts to make conversation despite Kai's indifference.
