The Mighty Ducks movie franchise remains a fan-favorite decades after it was released on the big screen. The television adaptation of the famed franchise hasn’t been as lucky. After two seasons, Disney+ has opted to cancel the series, a decision that was not totally unexpected. While fans of The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers are bummed by the news, Gilmore Girls fans are cautiously optimistic that it could mean good things for a second revival. So, does the series’ cancelation suddenly free up Lauren Graham’s schedule to consider a reboot of Gilmore Girls? Maybe. Is it going to happen, though? So far, there has been no news, but there is hope.

It’s a bad day to be a sports comedy series on Disney+. It’s been announced that the streaming service has cancelled The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers and Big Shot after just two seasons.
The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers wrapped up its second season last November, with Big Shot concluding in October. With no news about the possible renewal of either series since they aired their second and now final seasons, I suppose this news isn’t entirely unexpected.

The teams at the center of Disney+’s Mighty Ducks: Game Changers and Big Shot have played their last games.
The streamer has canceled both shows after two seasons each. The decision comes several months after the ends of their respective seasons: Game Changers concluded in November 2022, and Big Shot had a binge release in October.
The writing has perhaps been on the wall for both shows: After the surprising ouster of Peter Rice from Disney in June, a source at the company cited the decision to renew Big Shot and The Mighty Ducks after their first seasons as examples of Rice’s “questionable deal-making.”
As is usually the case with streaming series, detailed viewing data for the pair isn’t available; neither show managed to crack the top 10 of Nielsen’s streaming rankings during their runs. Outside of Marvel and Star Wars properties, The Santa Clauses is the...

In HBO Max's excellent miniseries "Beartown," a rural hockey coach explains why his team's enforcer punches his opponents so often. "He's not fighting. He's protecting the most important investment this town has ever seen." That investment is the team's star forward, and when a parent pushes this coach to elaborate further, he responds curtly, "Either you understand that aspect of hockey or you don't."

The second season of Disney+'s "Mighty Ducks" reboot has premiered, and Coach Gordon Bombay is noticeably absent. Instead, helping lead the team is a new coach: Colin Cole, a former NHL player portrayed by Josh Duhamel. But what happened to Emilio Estevez, who has portrayed Coach Bombay since the early '90s?
It was previously confirmed that Estevez, 60, would not be reprising his role as Bombay, now the owner of the Ice Palace, in "The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers" due to what has been described as a contract dispute. Estevez, of course, first played Bombay in the original "Mighty Ducks" in 1992 and its two followup films in 1994 and 1996.
Taking over for the actor was not without its pressures, newcomer Duhamel told TVLine in an interview on Sept. 27. "Because this is a pretty storied franchise and has a lot of history, and Emilio did such an amazing job all those years playing Gordon Bombay,...

Season 2 of Game Changers is here, and it would appear that team is light a couple of people, not to mention that, yes, Gordon Bombay gets a mention, but he’s not in the first episode and is not expected to return at this time. It is fun to see that Fulton and Portman, the Bash Brothers, have a cameo in the first episode, but it could be under better circumstances since the Ice Palace, the headquarters of the Don’t Bothers, who became the Ducks, from season 1. A good chunk of the team remains, as Evan, Nick, Koob, Maya,

"The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers" on Disney+ did a fine job of reviving the beloved family friendly sports franchise for a new generation. The series basically took the bones of the original movie and expanded them into a 10-episode story arc that took the ultra-competitive, powerhouse youth hockey team that the Mighty Ducks had become, had a scrappy new team of underdogs knock that chip off their shoulder, and brought them back down to Earth for a little reminder that hockey is also supposed to be fun.
Led by 12-year old Evan Morrow (Brady Noon of "Good Boys") and his mother/makeshift coach Alex (Lauren Graham), complete with a little help from crotchety former coach Gordon Bombay (Emilio Estevez), the team known as the Don't Bothers squared off with the haughty, elite youth hockey team and reclaimed the name of the Mighty Ducks for themselves, albeit in an unofficial match...

"The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers" brought a new generation of peewee hockey players to Disney+ last spring. In the show's first season, 12-year-old Evan Morrow (Brady Noon) was cut from the titular team, which had turned into an ultra-competitive powerhouse. His mother, Alex (Lauren Graham), formed a new team of ragtag underdogs called the Don't Bothers, and she even got some reluctant but much needed help from former Mighty Ducks coach and hockey player Gordon Bombay (Emilio Estevez), who had since become the owner of a low level ice rink.
Of course, by the end of the first season this team of misfits and their mismatched coaches banded together, and in an unofficial but crucial game with a high stakes bet, the Don't Bothers defeated the elite Mighty Ducks and took the team name for themselves. But in the upcoming second season of "Game Changers," the Ducks will be out...

It was pretty sweet to be a kid in the '90s. "The Sandlot," "Little Giants," "All That," so many movies and tv shows were geared toward us '80s babies, and a lot of it has stood the test of time. For '90s kids everywhere, "The Mighty Ducks" wasn't just a fun movie to watch with your buddies after watching episodes of "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" that your dad recorded off the TV, it was a way of life. Of the many, many, Many reboots and revivals hitting streaming services, "The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers" is a standout. The return of Emilio Estevez as Coach Gordon Bombay in the original "Mighty Ducks" trilogy, alongside original screenwriter Steven Brill, helped the series keep the same spirit as the original films. Plus, there's the ingenious twist of making the peewee Ducks organization the villains of the story, having grown into a hyper-competitive, elitist sports team, allowing Lauren Graham to step up as coach of a new team of underdogs called the Don't Bothers, with a little help from Coach Bombay.

Emilio Estevez Not Returning for ‘The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers’ Season 2 Over Vaccine Requirement
Emilio Estevez will not be returning for Season 2 of Disney Plus’ “The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers,” Variety has confirmed.
According to a source close to the production, Estevez’s departure is due to a disagreement over ABC Signature’s Covid-19 vaccination requirement, as he would not confirm that he would comply with the policy. Therefore, the studio decided not to renew his contract for Season 2. Under the recent return-to-work agreement between studios and unions, production for “The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers” requires vaccination against Covid-19 for everyone in Zone A, which includes all actors and crew members who come into contact with them.
It is unclear exactly how Estevez’s character will be written off of the show. Disney had no comment on his departure from the show and a representative for Estevez did not respond to a request for comment.

Exclusive: The Mighty Ducks franchise will continue without Gordon Bombay. Emilio Estevez, who reprised his role from the 1992 movie and its 1994 and 1996 sequels in Season 1 of The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, will not be back for the Disney+ series’ upcoming second season, I have learned.
I hear Disney Television Studios’ ABC Signature, which produces the hockey-themed sequel series, made the decision not to pick up Estevez’s option for Season 2 after weeks of back and forth with his team over the show’s Covid vaccination requirement. Reps for the studio and Estevez declined comment.
Heading into Season 2, The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers — like many Disney TV Studios series — has adopted a mandatory vaccination policy for the cast and crew in Zone A, which was included as an option in the most recent Return-to-Work agreement between the Hollywood studios and major unions. Our faithful captain was nowhere to be seen as the original Ducks returned to town
(Warning: Slight spoilers ahead for this week’s episode of “The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers”)
This week’s episode of “The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers” gave those who grew up on the films exactly what they were looking for — the return of the original Ducks. Well, most of them at least. And, as great as it was seeing the former Ducks we did get, there was a notable absence: Charlie.
The episode brought the return of six original Ducks: Fulton Reed (Elden Henson), Adam Banks (Vinny La Russo), Kenny Wu (Justin Wong), Averman (Matt Doherty), Connie (Marguerite Moreau) and Guy (Garret Henson). They were all back to town for the Spirit of the Ducks gala, celebrating the history of the team.
Charlie Conway, played by Joshua Jackson, was the original captain of the Mighty Ducks.

Things are getting slightly better, kind of, sort of, but in ways that are already making it obvious that they’ll continue to get worse before they really start looking up. Gordon Bombay is at least talking to Alex and the Don’t Bothers managed to score a single goal against the Mighty Ducks, which was amazing since the Ducks were slaughtering them and ended up winning 17-1. Obviously that wasn’t good enough for Coach T, who actually chewed his team out following the less than impressive win, stating that the Don’t Bothers shouldn’t have scored even a single goal. That was

Returning to the role of Gordon Bombay from The Mighty Ducks was something Emilio Estevez didn’t take lightly, and he probably wouldn’t have come back at all if it had simply been a rehash of the role he’d played in the franchise’s three movies. Maybe more than anything, “The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers” is a feat of casting. Yes, the Disney+ revival is a continuation of a beloved film series that helped birth not just a generation of fans but an NHL franchise (and an animated spinoff with a theme song still lodged in the subconscious of every kid that watched more than one episode).
But all of that previous success would never have happened if the youth hockey team that helped get the whole thing started almost 30 years ago didn’t feel like an actual team. So even though this new “Mighty Ducks” TV show finds the Ducks as a junior hockey powerhouse made up of heartless bullies, the new ragtag squad that forms in its wake is a club that’s instantly worth rooting for.

The Ducks are back, but they’re no longer the good guys! In Disney+’s The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, the iconic team now subscribes to the cutthroat mentality they previous railed against.
The first episode kicks off with the Ducks training at their state-of-the art facility. Alex (Lauren Graham), a single mom, rushes to get her son Evan (Boardwalk Empire’s Brady Noon) to practice. Ducks fly together. It was true in the 90s, and it’s still true in the new Disney+ series “The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers” — they’re just far more exclusive about who they’ll fly with now.
In this continuation, the Mighty Ducks are no longer the scrappy underdogs, and instead have become the “if you’re not a winner, you’re a loser” team. They’re led by Coach T (Dylan Playfair) who is blunt and apathetic, who cuts our new hero Evan Morrow from the team without so much as a sympathetic pat on the shoulder. He simply says “At this age, if you can’t be great at hockey, it’s like…don’t bother.

Whether lacing up against the peewee league’s elite Hawks, Team Iceland at the Junior Goodwill Games or Eden Hall’s dominant varsity team, The Mighty Ducks built a lasting legacy as the scrappy underdogs who play the game fairly and still end up on top.
The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers (premiering Friday, March 26) flips the script on the iconic team, who are now the bad guys in the Disney+ series created by Steve Brill (who wrote all three films). Now a powerhouse organization led by Coach T (The Descendants’ Dylan Playfair), the Ducks operate under a cutthroat ideology in which winning is everything.

It doesn’t take long for “The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers” to both acknowledge and gently reject its roots. Opening on a middle school hockey tryout with all the flashy pomp and circumstances of a primetime NHL game, the new Disney Plus series from Steve Brill, Cathy Yuspa and Josh Goldsmith makes it clear that the Ducks of 2021 are nothing like the scrappy underdogs of 1992. Almost 30 years later, the Minnesota youth team has become exactly the kind of hyper-competitive behemoth that it once stood defiantly against. The kids are ruthless, the coach even worse, and the stands are full of parents dreaming of a direct line to fancy colleges. Adding insult to injury, everyone seems to remember the Ducks of old as something of an adorable misstep. “Can you believe they used to quack?” asks one scoffing kid to another, oblivious to the anguished offscreen screams of all the former...

That sound you hear is every millennial quacking. Twenty-nine years after “The Mighty Ducks” skated into our hearts, introduced the Flying V and the Triple Deke, and launched not just two sequels, 1994’s “D2: The Mighty Ducks” and 1996’s “D3: The Mighty Ducks,” but an actual NHL team, the Mighty Ducks are flying again in Disney+’s new series “The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers,” premiering Friday, March 26. Except this flock has a new name altogether.
