Beware of drones. They will always outsmart humans. Sentry is an impressive under-3-minutes short film made by filmmaker Ryan Connolly, created for "Film Riot" run by the Connolly Brothers. It's another fine example of just how much can fit in 2 minutes of footage - introducing characters in a sci-fi world, letting action play out quickly. There's a lot going on in this and it's worth a watch. This is good enough to play as a "Black Mirror" opener. Sentry stars Josh Connolly and Justin Robinson. One is on the other side of the war than the other in this dystopian world. This could be called a proof-of-concept, but it's just an engaging micro short with some excellent VFX on top of it all. Watch below + check out more of the Connolly's videos. Thanks to Twitter for the tip. There's no description on either Vimeo or YouTube. Sentry is a micro short directed,...

The New Orleans Saints are beginning what could be Drew Brees’ last chance for a second Super Bowl title with a playoff game against the Chicago Bears, but fans are talking more about one of the networks broadcasting the matchup: Nickelodeon.
Yes, as part of an experiment by the NFL and Viacom to bring football to a new generation, the network of slime and SpongeBob SquarePants is airing a special kids-friendly broadcast of the wild card playoff game alongside the more expected broadcaster CBS. Some of the changes include slimy special effects during touchdowns, an explanation of rules by “Young Sheldon” star Iain Armitage, and comparisons of Brees and teammate Taysom Hill to SpongeBob and Patrick. While Nick has ventured into sports in the past with the Kids Choice Sports Awards, this is the first time the network has aired a live pro game.

"I need you to get up. Keep moving." Give this short film a look if you're in the mood for some gritty sci-fi action. Ballistic is the latest short film made by Ryan Connolly, and it's set in a post-apocalyptic time in the future. There's not much more of an introduction beyond that, so jump right in and start watching now. Ballistic stars Hannah Ward, Rachel Hendrix, Mark Ashworth, Graham Powell, and Omid Zader. I really like how this short just starts and gets into things fast, without spending too much time trying to explain anything. Just put us right in the middle of it and we can figure it out as it goes along. Watch below. Ballistic embedded directly from Vimeo. Original description: "In a post-apocalyptic world, a young woman fights for survival as she recalls traumatic events from her childhood." The short film is written and directed by...

Los Angeles, CA, – April 10, 2017 – The digital age has created a space where more people have access to making Hollywood quality films without Hollywood sized budgets. New filmmakers, like Randy Ayres, MD, have taken advantage of lessons from master teachers online and YouTube tutorials from sources like Film Riot, Mzed and Philip Bloom. Ayres applied his Diy learning to create his new independent feature film, Random Karma, an official selection of the 2017 Nice International Filmmaker Festival of World Cinema. Ryan Connolly from Film Riot was a major inspiration for Ayres during the production of Random Karma. Through the Film Riot YouTube channel, Connolly shares hundreds of short films, then shows his audience how he pulled them off. Ayres directly applied...

What do you do when the funding for your short movie falls through? Make a different short movie! That’s what Ryan Connolly of Film Riot did after a large portion of the funding he was counting on for his big-budget short film project Outsiders fell through just days before shooting was to begin. In a similar situation most people would probably spend a week or so re-evaluating their life choices. But since they had the gear and the people had already flown in, Connolly decided instead to come up with, and shoot, a different short. The result is PROXiMITY, an […]...

Another day, another batch of ooey, gooey shorts to bring you guys from the New York City Horror Film Festival! Have no worries, because the quality was still on kick-ass display, showcasing some bright up and coming horror talent. There’s really no point in wasting time writing an introduction though, let’s just jump to the films!
Rotting Hill
Director: James Cunningham
Ah, love in the time of zombies. Always a romantic and, er, gory tale of spellbound hearts and spending an eternity together with “the one.” Rotting Hill is a cute little love story, and yes I just said cute, about two undead lovers munching their way through the apocalypse. There’s some really cool effects on display and a few good kills, even though I’m not sure why zombies are killing other zombies (hate crime?), but hell, it’s a fun little romp none the less.

A few years ago, I came across a Revision3 show called Film Riot. It is a show all about Diy filmmaking and is hosted by Ryan Connolly. The show covers everything from lighting and sound to special effects and editing. If you want to make a film on a budget, check out the show. Back in May, Ryan released his short film Tell on YouTube. It is a horror-thriller inspired by Edgar Allen Poe’s The Tell-Tale Heart and it is awesome! At the same time, he started taking pre-orders for the DVD and Blu-ray. I was lucky enough to get my order in before they sold out and I got my copy just in time for the weekend.
Firstly, it was nice to watch the movie in full HD on my television instead of compressed through YouTube. It is a brilliantly shot movie with some very impressive camera work.

The German Short Film. Nick Ryan‘s The German (2008) short film stars Toby Kebbell, Christian Brassington, Glenn Mullins, Gary Murphy, and David Ryan. The German‘s plot synopsis: “November 1940, during the greatest conflict man has ever known, an epic duel unfolds between two ace pilots, each willing to take the match to it’s ultimate conclusion. Unknown to the pilots is a fate neither has considered.”
This short film immediately reminded me of the Paths of Hate (2010) short film. Since The German came out before that short film, perhaps it inspired it. Paths of Hate is far better though in my opinion, but The German has a better ending.
The German is a testament to the level of work being done in the short film format these days.
