David Murgia, Slimane Dazi, Karoline Rose and Suzanne Aubert all shine bright in the cast of the filmmaker’s 19th feature, a Prince Films production sold by Les Films de Losange. Halted by the health crisis after several weeks of filming across February and March, Tony Gatlif revived his Tom Medina film-set at break-neck speed once lockdown had ended. He’d wrapped shooting by the end of May, becoming the first director in France (by far) to resurrect a suspended production, a fact which won’t come as a great surprise to many, given his cast-iron character teeming with love for life and freedom. Tom Medina is the 19th feature by the filmmaker, who has notably won acclaim in Locarno (scooping the Silver Leopard in 1997 for Gadjo dilo), Berlin (gracing the 2012 Panorama line-up with the documentary Indignados) and, most importantly, in Cannes, where he has featured in the Official Selection showcase.
"Prove why your special unit is so special." Signature Entertainment has debuted the official UK trailer for an intense rescue drama titled 15 Minutes of War, based on the shocking true story of a hostage situation in 1976 in Somali. From director Fred Grivois, the film stars Olga Kurylenko as an American teacher accompanying twenty-one French children. Their school bus is taken hostage at the Somali border, so the Gign is sent and after 30 hours of tension their plan is executed. The elite team is tasked with carrying out a simultaneous five-men sniper attack to get the children and their teacher out safely. The film also stars Alban Lenoir, Sébastien Lalanne, David Murgia, Michaël Abiteboul, Guillaume Labbé, Ben Cura, Vincent Perez, Josiane Balasko, and Kevin Layne. This looks like most other hostage thrillers, with some intense moments and brutal scenes where they're doing only what is necessary to save everyone. Here's the...

Mia Hansen-Løve, following up her incredible, sadly overlooked drama Eden, will premiere the Isabelle Huppert-led Things to Come, while Thomas Vinterberg, Lav Diaz, André Téchiné, and many more will stop by with their new features. Check out the new additions below, followed by some previously announced films, notably John Michael McDonagh‘s War on Everyone.

Title: Bullhead Directed By: Michael R. Roskam Starring: Matthias Schoenaerts, Jeroen Perceval, Jeanne Dandoy, Barbara Sarafian, Tibo Vandenborre, Frank Lammers, Sam Louwyck, Robin Valvekens, Baudoin Wolwertz, David Murgia, Erico Salamone, Philippe Grand’Henry, Kris Cuppens, Sofie Sente, Kristof Renson Talk about starting out on the right foot. Not only did first time feature writer-director Michael R. Roskam deliver a solid film, but he snagged an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. Will it claim the Oscar? I’m betting against it, but Bullhead is still undoubtedly a worthy watch. As kids, Jacky Vanmarsenille (Robin Valvekens) and his buddy Diederik Maes (Baudoin Wolwertz) get into a scuffle with a local bully,...

Note: This is a re-post of our Viff review.
The name Michael R. Roskam may become very familiar around cinematic circles—possibly as soon as next spring. Beating out all other accomplished filmmakers from Belgium, it is this writer/director’s first feature Rundskop [Bullhead] that has won the honor of representing its country at the Oscars. You’ll understand why it prevailed quickly, earning the praise of not just being a great debut, but a great film too.
Assured, intelligent, and gripping, this gangster tale isn’t necessarily unique in tone but is completely fresh in subject matter. Instead of cocaine or heroine as the central drug manufactured and distributed, the Flemish mob families here deal cows. By injecting growth hormones, multiple farms in Belgium have cultivated strong illegal trade circles of infused beef and milk. It’s big business and thusly under constant police surveillance, but somehow they’ve...
