When did Paramount know that “mother!” was a problem? Nothing about the film should have been a surprise to the studio; Aronofsky sold the $30-million movie to late studio chairman Brad Grey on a pitch, running through the audacious allegorical concept beat by beat. Maybe the studio concentrated on the Jennifer Lawrence of it all, until tracking showed the numbers wouldn’t support the long haul of a platform release. So Paramount moved the date up by a month, to come on the heels of the film’s festival debuts.
Meanwhile, Aronofsky convinced Paramount to skip preview screenings; this left the studio anxiously urging the director to explain the movie, off the record, to the press corps. After a strong reaction at its Venice debut, the “mother!” team started to discuss the film in more detail on the record at the Toronto Film Festival. In his interviews with journalists and...

The nice thing about a show being on the air for a long while is that the creators can reach back and dust off an underutilized character for another go-round.
If the character is still living, that is. And that isn't necessarily a deal-breaker.
On Hawaii Five-0 Season 7 Episode 20, the blast from the past was Harry Brown.
First introduced on Hawaii Five-0 Season 5 Episode 10, Harry was a retired Honolulu policeman turned Pi and an old friend of McGarrett's dad Jack.
Harry was a welcome breath of nicotine-polluted air and came from the wise-cracking gumshoe tradition.
He literally brought the case of the week to McGarrett, and it was a good twisty, turny one.
A selfish rich man hired Harry to follow his wife, who got kidnapped right in front of Harry. His attempt to intercede didn't go well, which was why he ended up at Five-0 headquarters, getting his head stitched up.

1.3 Crossing Lines
Before I get into the third instalment of Between, I want to correct something I said last time. I’d said that the conversation between Chuck and Gord was about football, when it was about ice hockey. A better look at the ‘Dukes’ logo on Chuck’s jacket revealed my mistake, sorry.
I’ve just got to the end of Crossing Lines, and I’m feeling distinctly upbeat that this show is now half over. That said, the past 42 minutes were particularly dire in terms of entertainment, as Between moved effortlessly between a set of characters without generating the smallest morsel of viewer connection between them. It’s hard to imagine a less likeable collection of self-obsessed characters.
But before we get to that,...

10. Altered States (1980)
Directed by: Ken Russell
Is it a horror film? Many of Ken Russell’s films could be argued as such, but there’s enough in Altered States that makes it less horror and more science fiction/psychological thriller. Based on the novel by Paddy Chayefsky, Altered States introduced the world to William Hurt (and also featured the film debut of Drew Barrymore). Edward Jessup (Hurt) is studying schizophrenia, but branches out into sensory deprivation experimentation with a floating tank. Eventually, he travels to Mexico to visit a tribe that provides him with an extract which he begins to take before his trips into the flotation tank, resulting in bizarre imagery and eventual physical devolution, once to a primitive man and to a near primordial blob. Side effects start to occur, causing Edward to suffer from episodes of partial regression even without the hallucinogenic drug. Russell’s direction shifts...

Each month, we turn our spotlight onto the unsung artists behind the biggest new movie releases. Last month we highlighted Phil Lord and Chris Miller, co-writers and co-directors of The Lego Movie. This month it’s Clint Mansell, composer of the original score for Noah.
Chances are, whether you realise it or not, you have heard the work of Clint Mansell many times over. Even if you have never in your life watched a film scored by this prolific musician and composer, you will have unconsciously captured the various strains of his melodies on countless adverts, film trailers and episodes of Top Gear. Mansell – the former lead singer and guitarist of ‘alternative rock’ band Pop Will Eat Itself – makes memorable, moving music.
As a founding member of Pop Will Eat Itself, Mansell helped kickstart a group that would evolve through many stages of development during its fifteen year career. With...

Of all the canards foisted upon and between culture fans in 2013, there was none more dubious than the notion that the supposed “battle” of television vs. film had come to an end, with the former declared the victor. Besides the fact that comparing such disparate mediums is a fool’s errand at best, both are such vast and complicated enterprises that any pitched battle likely only pits narrow conceptions of each against the other. (Strawman vs. strawman, the most popular form of discourse on the Internet.) The simplest way to invalidate the entire argument quickly: where films only have to be taken on their own terms as one complete work, TV series need to be considered in at least three contexts: by episode, by season, and by the overall run of the series.
With several shows ending their runs this year, including Breaking Bad, Dexter, Southland, Spartacus, and The Killing (up until its latest resurrection,...

Open thread: Fox is opening a theme park with rides based on Life of Pi, Predator and Night at the Museum. What other films deserve the fairground attraction treatment?
Fox is opening up its first theme park. Sited in Malaysia, the studio's 25 acre resort is set to feature rides and attractions based on films including Ice Age, Alien, Predator and Life of Pi.
Ang Lee's Pi, about a 16-year-old stranded on a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger, is perhaps not the most obvious candidate for the theme park treatment – but what other films would you like to see turned into rides?
At Universal Studios, where this kind of thing has been going on for years, you can currently go on attractions based on Et, Transformers, Despicable Me and Jurassic Park.
But these all seem like fairly obvious choices. If you were planning Fox's new theme park, what films would you base your rides on?...

Are you familiar with the three B’s? Don’t fret if you aren’t; honest mistake. Most wouldn’t know what they stood for unless they had a penchant for skin-crawling content or a passionate knowledge of all things horror and science-fiction related. Don Dohler was an archetypal filmmaker for the sacred formula of B’s as he committed his life to creating and producing such movies as Nightbeast, Fiend and who can forget Alien Factor 2: The Alien Rampage? While such a coagulated patrimony might be brushed aside by most, his influence and honest prescription for a horror film’s health has been everlasting. And those three little B’s? Blood, boobs and beasts. Such an ideal has been adopted by countless films and now, V/H/S/2 continues the trend with wreckless abandon. . . And it’s all the better for it.

Of all the things that have addled and irritated the watchers of Lena Dunham’s HBO series Girls (the characters are too white and overprivileged! Lena Dunham spends too much time naked!), of all the things that have made a noisy sliver of them feel that the show is worthy of their “hate,” the late-in-the-game revelation that Dunham’s middle-class lost-girl princess Hannah suffers from Ocd seemed all but designed to stoke the hostility of those who dislike Girls but can’t stop watching it. To someone like me, though, who adores the show (I’ll put my passion right out there: In two seasons,...

Hawaii Five-0’s triumphant season three return could be dubbed “Mommy’s Home!” And despite a few hiccups, the episode had some wonderfully meaty character driven parts. Not very hard when you consider that we left off last season with Steve McGarrett (Alex O’loughlin) coming face to face with his long lost mom – aka the over-mystified Shelborne – Chin Ho (Daniel Dae Kim) loses his wife Malia (Reiko Aylesworth) (much to my chagrin) and Wo Fat (Mark Dacascos) is still public enemy number one. Intense, right? Just wait until you see the Claw! I have always said that Alex O’loughlin has a lovely ability to go from steely-eyed badass, to vulnerable little boy in about two seconds flat. And he shows us Super Steve’s vulnerable side when he realizes that everything he thought he knew about his parents as a kid was a lie. Doris McGarrett (Christine Lahti...

Sexy! Daring! It will literally Be Raining Men!
For months, the ads for Magic Mike have been screaming promises of greased-up, stripped-down, body-shot-fuled debauchery at us with all the subtlety of a Westboro Baptist funeral crasher. So it's with both a tip of the hat and a bit of a sigh that I report that yes, Magic Mike is the most awesomely unabashed celebration of Chippendale-variety crotch-wagging ever to grace the American screen ... and it's also a pretty damned decent drama as well. Much like the man at its center, Mike deserves to be seen as the total package ... even though the packages most of us will be plunking down our singles for would have been plenty.
Chronicling three months in the lives of a group of strippers in Tampa, Mike is the perfect summer movie: its pace is unhurried; its attitude is refreshingly blase; and its sun-soaked, skin-filled landscape...

It’s March 14, also known as 3/14, also known as Pi Day. To some, it’s the most wonderful day of the year, when math geeks and science nerds alike can join together in mathematical harmony to celebrate the majestic wonders of this baffling number. While this writer can proudly admit that she has memorized 72 digits of pi (it was for a seventh-grade math project, sheesh), it’s far more entertaining to reach into the depths of our pop culture-ingrained minds and discover ways this elusive, irrational number has riddled itself into our entertainment-based society. A few highlights below.

College kids run around a cemetery on Hallowe'en and a girl falls into an open grave and lands on a Db. Jo (Sela Ward) comments, "It's not often you find a Db where it actually belongs." Mac (Gary Sinise) claims he was dead before he got here. Flack (Eddie Cahill) is canvassing the area for a murder weapon and Jo asks, "expecting the dead to speak." The Db was hit before the fall. Nice moment between Jo and Flack that's what gives this show so much more in terms of character development and why it deserves to continue. That and great storylines. Oh okay I've had my rant at the beginning, never mind! The Db has four phones on him, which Flack calls overkill Mac: "...so does dying in somebody else's grave." Fisher (David Burke) is responsible for the cemetery and claims he isn't trained to handle this kind of death,...

'Rock of Ages'
Release Date: June 1
Starring: Julianne Hough, Diego Boneta, Tom Cruise
The Scoop: One of the most popular and acclaimed Broadway musicals in recent memory, "Rock of Ages" tells the story of a couple of small-town dreamers who get caught up in the big-city spotlight -- and it tells that story using the transformative power of '80s rock. That's enough for us, but if you're somehow not sold, the film version of "Rock of Ages" also features a Who's Who of Hollywood stars, including Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin, Russell Brand, Paul Giamatti, Bryan Cranston and Catherine Zeta-Jones. We hold in our hands the covers for DC Comics this February. As a child of four can plainly see, these comics have been hermetically sealed in a Cgc 9.9 slab, and they’ve been kept in a #2 mayonnaise jar under a giant stack of returned copies of Holy Terror since noon today.
What do we have worth noting? The new look of Darkseid, and we’re far enough into the new 52 books that it’s time for Batman to start crossing over in all of them. Plus Mara Jade, the red-haired assassin who fell in love with her blond-haired man she was sent to kill– oh, I’m sorry, that’s from Star Wars. This is Mera in a jade outfit. Our mistake.
Shall we? Surely!

Director José Padilha, the man tapped to direct the upcoming Robocop reboot, recently sat down with Crave Online and spoke about what he’s been brainstorming about the project. This will be Padilha’s first big Hollywood movie and we can’t wait to see how the Brazilian director will do. The way he talks about his preference for handheld-camera work truly makes as wonder how Padilha, a man well known for his action sequences, will deliver some of the action we’re sure to see in the reboot.
What are you going to do with a studio budget on ‘Robocop?’
Spend it. [Laughs] Listen, I always try to make the best film I can. If I can have one year to shoot a film, I want one year to shoot a film. If it’s not possible, I’ll try to make as best as I can in the timeframe that I have.

Flies feed of a Db dumped in the park, as the scene flashes back to the murder Vic in the club; where she's picked up by a man. The scene rewinding and then fast forwarding with the song, New York, New York, playing was an interesting effect. Flack (Eddie Cahill) informs them the Vic was found by a hiker. Hawkes (Hill Harper) determines she's been dead at least 36 hours. Flack recalls the name of another Vic who was also stabbed, strangled and dumped in the park, Macy Martinez.. Mac recalls it was on the other side of the park. A nearby path could have provided easy access for the body dump. Mac: "sometimes evil finds finds you on the road you take to avoid it." Another one of Mac's evil comments, second one this season. Also alluding to himself, with the ex-con finding him and his ex-partner, who was evil personified too.

Directed By: Darren Aronofsky
Starring: Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis, Vincent Cassel
Darren Aronofsky’s latest work is perhaps the ultimate mediation on the art/act of performance.
The tale of the female ballet dancer and her strive for perfection is detailed here in a manner unlike any other seen upon the big screen, with the metaphorical “journey into hell” that the protagonist takes; a frenzied and visceral portrayal of an industry rarely exposed to the outside from within its notoriously cliquey confines.
Black Swan tells the story of Nina (Natalie Portman), a young ballerina who is a rising star in the New York City Ballet. Nina is an only child, her protective mother (Barbara Hershey) bordering on mentally unstable, which in turn has placed a strong-headed desire within Nina to succeed professionally. A rivalry develops between her and Lily (Mila Kunis), a recent arrival to the group, and one whose...

His latest film Black Swan harks back to that work; the tale of a young ballerina undergoing psychological transformation, her identity thrown into question on the most visceral of levels.

Some movies simply demand repeat viewings, and a second watch often reveals new details you’d missed the first time. Here’s our pick of ten movies that deserve to be watched twice…
The vast majority of films produced are made purely for money, and this isn't really all that surprising when cash is still very much considered king in Hollywood. Nevertheless, every now and then a film comes out that commands your attention, engages your senses, and stays with you for quite sometime after it's finished.
Some call it art, others proclaim it the work of a genius and some, rather more simply, refer to it as a decent film. Either way, it doesn't really matter how you label them, one simple fact unites them all: some films are so good you have to see them at least twice, whether it's to understand the complexities of the plot, or...

In honor of the first season ending this Tuesday (May 25), your questions about "Parenthood" -- the best new dramedy of the year -- Korbi TV's answers...
What's going to happen with Zeke and Camille on "Parenthood" now that he knows she slept with her art teacher? Will they split up for real? -MikeNo, the score is kind of just even now. Zeke (Craig T. Nelson) will keep trying to win her back. I'm hearing something about a ukelele serenade. Sounds kind of terrible, no? And adorable at the same time. We'll see if she falls for it.
The scene between Adam and Sarah on "Parenthood" last week was hard to watch. I was disappointed in Adam. I've been a fan of his character all season, but he could see his sister was in pain and he just walked out. I'm assuming they'll patch things up because, in the previews for the finale,...

We Are Movie Geeks would like to welcome the newest member of our little family and allow him the opportunity to introduce himself. Adam, aka The Chicago Guy, will be adding his own Chicago-style point-of-view on all things cinematic, movies that is.
All-Time Top Five Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love All Forms of Cinema Hello all! This is Adam, the newest writer for WeAreMovieGeeks.com. I will be your Chicago correspondent, covering all things cinematic related to the Windy City: premieres, screenings, Chi-town trivia, etc. This Midwest metropolis has been my home since 2003, and will be for a long time to come.
I blame my movie addiction on my dear big brother–and Wamg managing editor–Travis. As kids, we shared many a late night watching whatever we could get our hands on–from the latest blockbuster to the oldest, shlockiest horror movie Travis could find at the video store.
