Cathryne Czubek’s documentary about an impoverished film-maker and an American superfan veers towards a white saviour narrative but the low-budget movie mogul’s charisma wins out
Here is a documentary about a self-taught film-maker from impoverished edgetown Wakaliga, near Kampala in Uganda, and the American fan who comes to meet him and becomes a collaborator. At first it looks like a bouncy, bright feelgood story barely disguising a white-saviour narrative under the surface; after all, that is what both director Cathryne Czubek and former publicist (and now fan) Alan Hofmanis are. That said, Czubek makes a concerted effort to crosscut between the viewpoints of Hofmanis and the charismatic figure who draws him to Uganda from New York in the first place: uber-low-budget movie mogul Isaac Nabwana, whose story rightly dominates.
Although former brickmaker Nabwana made thousands of bricks by hand (he demonstrates his technique with mud and frames for...

When Ugandan action filmmaker Isaac Nabwana lists off some of the great action stars that became a huge personal inspiration, he says names like Bud Spencer, Chuck Norris, and Bruce Lee, but then he says Rambo (as opposed to Sylvester Stallone). The iconography of American Hollywood action cinema is not only in the stars who act in them, but oftentimes the characters themselves and what they do. How they’re perceived by filmgoers as entertainers are not restrained through economic means. Cultural iconography is created, not born or ordained to the elite. That is the essential project behind Wakaliwood, a makeshift “film industry” in the Ugandan rural village of Wakaliga.
Cathryne Czubek’s documentary Once Upon a Time in Uganda takes its audience behind the scenes of Nabwana’s production process, giving insight into the ways he thinks like an artist, a businessman, and a community leader. Czubek chooses to film certain scenes,...

The greatest cinematic surprises often come from the unlikeliest beginnings. In the case of Cathryne Czubek's Once Upon a Time in Uganda, those beginnings are the slums of Wakaliga, Kampala, Uganda. The humble origin story of Wakaliwood and its ever expanding reach across the globe are her subject, and it's both inspirational and aspirational for the audience and its subjects, namely Ramon Film Productions founder and Wakaliwood auteur Isaac Nabwana and his number one cheerleader and liaison to the outside world, Alan Hofmanis. When Hofmanis was shown the trailer for Nabwana's action bonanza, Who Killed Captain Alex a little over a decade ago, it sparked something in him that he needed at that moment. Fresh off a broken engagement and looking for a reason to...

“This was going to a transformative event, and with the cancellation, the filmmakers were left stranded and scrambling.”
SXSW film head Janet Pierson said on Friday (13) that despite the cancellation of the physical festival, staff will ensure all of this year’s competition sections can be judged via screener links.
At time of writing Screen understands almost every filmmaker in every section including the 10 narrative feature and 10 documentary feature competition categories had opted into the plan. Only one filmmaker of a short had not opted in and at time of writing organisers were waiting to hear back from the teams behind two high school shorts.

If you’re hoping for a deep exploration of the connection between women and firearms, Cathryne Czubek’s documentary A Girl and a Gun will fail you. There is little to this 76-minute film that isn’t very obvious and sometimes even oblivious. Or maybe the aim wasn’t to bother with the heavy psychoanalytic notions of guns being extensions of masculinity because of their phallic shape as much as their capability for dominance. It’s a light piece of nonfiction, not even going for much political address let alone agenda, in spite of the national conversation going on this year. As far as missing out on timeliness, though, it’s mostly a shame the doc was produced too soon to be informed by or point to Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers, with its strong barrel-fellating imagery. There are a lot of film clips here, too. Shots from your basic female-heavy action movies, such...
