‘LA LA’ Gets Re-re-re-release
Iconic Hollywood musical film “La La Land” is to re-release (again) in South Korean theaters from Wednesday. Distributed by Pancinema, it will play at the country’s Imax cinemas for a one-week limited run with tickets costing upwards of KRW15,000 ($11.25) for adults.
The film was directed by Damien Chazelle and stars Ryan Gosling (newly Oscar-nominated for his role as Ken in “Barbie”) and Emma Stone, and holds the box office record for movie musicals with global box office of $470 million.
It recently re-released in cinemas in China in time for the Christmas peak season. And, according to local sources, the latest outing in Korea will be its third re-release in the country, following a conventional release in December 2017, a re-release in March 2020 and yet another in September 2022.
In its initial run, the film sold 5.13 million tickets and earned KRW31.2 billion or $23.4 million at today’s exchange rates.

Exclusive: LA-based VFX studio Saffronic has hired an Executive Creative Director, soon after Skyler Mattson was named CEO.
Animation specialist Kevin J. Johnson has landed the role at the company, which launched last year and has been following a global expansion strategy since then.
Johnson has worked in animation for three decades and was most recently Supervising Director at Universal 1440 Entertainment on the final four seasons of Curious George.
At Saffronic, he will work closely with Kristy Scanlan, the company’s recently appointed SVP of Business Development, to foster relationships with new and existing clients. He’ll lead on communication of creative vision, concepts, ideas, and solutions to stakeholders, internal teams, and clients, and lead ongoing productions.
Saffronic is currently working with companies such as DreamWorks Animation, WildBrain and Trioscope.

Creative and design industry veteran Skyler Mattson has been unveiled in the role at Saffronic, which former Technicolor execs Tim Sarnoff and Vince Pizzica founded last year.
Mattson is the former President of WongDoody, a global creative and design agency, and has a background in design, branding, media strategy, Ux and Ui, and digital product services. At WongDoody she led the ads and branding business from an 80-staff operation to a company of more than 2,000 around the world.
At Saffronic, she’ll be responsible for solidifying the company’s vision in the media, entertainment, video games, advertising and creative sectors worldwide. Though headquartered in LA, Saffronic has a production facility in Chennai, India.
Mattson will also champion the company’s “by artists for artists” mantra and shape its organisational structure.

Heading into its 20th anniversary year in 2014, Women In Animation (Wia) has relaunched under new executive leadership.
The co-presidents are Margaret Dean (pictured, at left), director of production for Mattel’s newly formed Playground Productions, and Kristy Scanlan (pictured, at right), Technicolor vp of business development, animation and games.
Wia has also formed a new executive committee, board of directors and advisory committee. Retiring co-presidents Rita Street and Jan Nagel will continue to support Wia as members of the advisory committee.
Dean and Scanlan are charged with leading the restructured Wia, communicating the organisation’s current role and future vision to its members worldwide.
Encompassing women from all aspects of the animation industry, Wia envisions a world in which “women share fully in the creation, production and rewards of animation, resulting in richer and more diverse entertainment and media that move our culture forward.”
