What makes the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) so endearing beyond its penchant for experimentation is an atmosphere that’s joyful and devoid of stress or self-importance. That was evident at this year’s festival, inside theaters where it seemed like the experience was about sharing cinematic pearls and not about arranging financial deals. The film selection was once again a delightfully uneven mishmash of bold stories with, perhaps, a through line having to do with our complicated relationship to otherness.
In Ulaa Salim’s Eternal, this otherness takes the shape of the Earth itself and of a woman’s body. These two are metaphorically linked through the figure of a fracture, which appears as a sign of the end of times after an earthquake in Iceland cracks the Earth open, and is poetically mapped onto the body of Anita (Anna Søgaard Frandsen) when she and Elias (Viktor Hjelmsø) first have sex.

Two cops are stranded in hostile territory when an act of police brutality triggers a riot in this slick action film
Denmark’s reputation as the land of tolerance, equality and cosy contentment takes a battering in this superslick urban thriller directed with adrenaline and savvy by first timers Frederik Louis Hviid and Anders Ølholm. “Shorta” is Arabic for “police”, and the movie opens with black teenager Talib Ben Hassi lying face down, a white police officer on his back. “I can’t breathe,” he pleads. We don’t see Talib again but his name is repeated over and over: on the streets in Svalegårdena, the fictional estate where he grew up; by TV journalists reporting on his condition in intensive care; at the police station where damage limitation is in overdrive.

Slick, unsettling Danish law-enforcement thriller “Shorta” — or as it’s been generically retitled in the United States, “Enforcement” — opens with a familiar “I can’t breathe” moment as a team of police scramble to restrain a 19-year-old Muslim man, suggesting that what happened to Eric Garner in Staten Island, and to George Floyd in Minneapolis, is hardly an America-specific problem. Like those men, Talib Ben Hassi dies from complications of the police chokehold, and as in those cases, the community rises up against the establishment that was sworn to protect it.
In other words, “Shorta” begins where films such as “Do the Right Thing” and “Les Misérables” abruptly stopped. That’s an awfully ambitious (if somewhat foolhardy) setup for helmers Anders Ølholm and Frederik Louis Hviid to construct their debut feature — a thriller that’s both a relentless adrenaline rush and a social-issue Rorschach test for all who watch it.

The Brad Furman-directed crime thriller City of Lies has had quite a journey, but the Saban Films release finally hits theaters today before dropping on digital and on demand April 9.
Based on the book, LAbyrinth, by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Randall Sullivan and adapted by Christian Contreras, City of Lies follows the investigation into the infamous murder of iconic rap artist Christopher Wallace aka the hip hop legend Notorious B.I.G.
Oscar and Emmy winner Forest Whitaker stars as Jack Jackson, a journalist who teams up with LAPD detective Russell Poole (Johnny Depp), who spent nearly 20 years trying to solve the murder. The two of them try to find the truth. They explore why the case remains cold — and why a secret division of the LAPD is seemingly set on keeping it that way.
It’s not a lie that City of Lies went through a lot to make its way to the theaters.

"We have to show who's in charge." Magnet Releasing has unveiled a new official US trailer for the Danish action crime thriller Enforcement, originally known as Shorta in Danish. The film seems to almost be a Danish remake of Ladj Ly's Les Miserables, about two cops who encounter vengeful locals that don't like them. When news of his death gets out, the two dissimilar policemen Jens and Maik are just on patrol in Svalegården, a ghetto on the outskirts of Copenhagen. Here, they suddenly find themselves at the centre of a violent uprising as the residents let their pent-up anger be known. When their patrol car is put out of action, Jens and Maik must make their way out of the neighborhood on foot. Starring Jacob Lohmann and Simon Sears. This looks way more intense than expected,...

A White, White DayUnder the wintry, aluminium-tinged skies of Hlynur Pálmason’s films, men fight against loneliness and isolation, literal and metaphorical. However premature it may be to attach a leitmotiv to the oeuvre of a 34-year-old with two features under his belt, the Reykjavik-native’s 2017 debut feature, Winter Brothers, and his sophomore, A White, White Day, offer portraits of men marooned in landscapes of belittling immensities, fumbling after an identity in austere, inhospitable places. Winter Brothers chronicled the toxic sibling rivalry between two young mine workers (Elliott Crosset Hove and Simon Sears) stranded in a remote corner of Eastern Denmark. His Cannes Critics' Week entry, A White, White Day, follows police chief Ingimundur (Ingvar Eggert Sigurðsson) as he struggles to process the loss of his wife by channeling all his energies on building a house for his daughter and beloved 8-year-old granddaughter Salka (Ída Mekkín Hlynsdóttir). Much like Winter...
