Music makes such a huge difference when it comes to enjoying TV’s top shows, on a level that goes well beyond a theme song. Great composers create an aural language that’s as tangible and essential as the actors or sets on screen, aided by music supervisors who discover undiscovered tracks as well as essential classic gems —without which the show’s most powerful moments would have no impact.
Even the Television Academy agrees: For this first time, this year the Emmy Awards handed out a prize for outstanding music supervision. Susan Jacobs won the award for the “Big Little Lies” episode “You Get What You Need.”
There were so many shows that changed the way music was used on television this year — whether it was Tom Petty’s “American Girl” becoming a shout of protest, an obscure Elvis Presley cover becoming one of our favorite tunes of the year,...

Nashville, Tenn. — There will be a British invasion of the main stage at Bonnaroo this year.
Paul McCartney and Mumford & Sons are among the headliners for the 2013 Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival in Manchester, Tenn.
The four-day festival, held on a rural 700-acre farm, always features an eclectic roster, but the June 13-16 event is even more varied than usual.
Returnees Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers also hold down a headliner spot. Then things get a little crazy with R&B star R. Kelly, alternative queen Bjork and Wu-Tang Clan celebrating its 20th anniversary. Wilco, Pretty Lights, The Lumineers, The National, The xx, Kendrick Lamar, A$AP Rocky, Nas and Zz Top also top the list announced Tuesday by "Weird Al" Yankovic via Bonnaroo's YouTube channel.
Tickets go on sale at noon Est on Saturday.
McCartney, the former Beatle and recent frontman of Sirvana, will be making his first appearance at the event.

Synth-rockers Passion Pit have just dropped the video for “Carried Away,” the latest single off of their 2012 album Gossamer, and it’s a kinetic, fast-motion look at a tumultuous relationship between a couple played by frontman Michael Angelakos and "One Tree Hill" star Sophia Bush, directed by indie-video prodigies Benjamin and Alex Brewer, and shot by “Beasts of the Southern Wild” cinematographer Ben Richardson. So many notable facets of this collaboration. First of all, it’s great to see Richardson with an exciting if small-scale project post 'Beasts.' His gorgeous camerawork was recognized last year with the Excellence in Cinematography Award at Sundance and the Camera d’Or prize at Cannes, but he was snubbed for an Oscar nomination, despite all of the film’s other Oscar recognition (Best Directing, Best Picture). The directing of the video is also fantastic, with brothers Benjamin and Alex Brewer at the helm.

Thousands of music fans trekked to New York's Madison Square Garden on Friday night, faces turned down against the snow and biting winds of a still-emerging storm that someone decided to call Nemo. They had come to see Passion Pit, an indie rock outfit from Boston, and many expressed surprise that the arena was nearly full. Either New Yorkers are too cynical to take the advice of Mayor Mike Bloomberg or too arrogant to let some flurries get in the way of seeing a show at The Garden.
Singer Michael Angelakos led the five-piece band through an engaging and, at times, emotional show -- which was more suited to the venue than the show Passion Pit put on at last year's Governors Ball. This review is long overdue. It should’ve signed off the end of last year but instead it starts this year off with an uplifting ring. I would like to thank Evan Andree for his patience during my shambolic arranging of myself these past weeks, and congratulate him on a great Ep.
So I’m sat here, back home for Christmas and New Year, one hand fervently shaking a mug of coffee from my bedside table to my mouth, and the other teaming up with the rest of its arm as it acts as a shelf to an Anthology of American Literature that I’m scrambling through to get up to date on the required reading I haven’t even looked at until now. In the background I have Evan Andree’s Invisible Sap Ep on loop on my iTunes. It’s helping.

"We're fated to pretend, fated to pretend, we're fated to pretend…" That's the sound of 2008: George W Bush is in power, RPatz meets KStew for the first time and Mgmt are rulers of the synth. But somewhere in among the never-ending stream of electro-pop, Passion Pit are swept away. Given the calibre of both of the Boston five-piece's albums - their debut Manners and this year's Gossamer - we should be in a much bigger venue for tonight. Instead, it's at the Kentish Town Forum where one of indie's most underrated bands play to a, ahem, cult following. Not that singer/keyboardist Michael Angelakos appears ruffled, leaping through first song (and Tune of 2012) 'Take a Walk' like a sugar-rushed Bash Street Kid; he's got his shirt tucked out of his pants and everything. The high-pitched and higher energy electronic group Passion Pit announced today that they will hit the road this February with dance duo Matt & Kim—a combination which will presumably produce enough flashing lights, frantic beats, and youthful exuberance to repel even the coolest of cool dads. The announcement comes hot on the heels of the band's fall tour, which wraps up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on Nov. 6. Passion Pit's latest album, Gossamer, came out in July, while Matt and Kim's fourth studio effort, Lightning, was released Oct. 2. Dates are below. Feb. 5—NorVA—Norfolk, Virginia Feb ...

The Twilight Saga soundtracks have always been met with consistent praise for being well-coordinated and including impressive artists. In the same tradition, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2's original motion picture soundtrack is quite a fitting end to the series indeed. The fourteen-track album contains a few numbers that harken straight back to the original tone of the Twilight Saga, like St. Vincent's "The Antidote" and Feist's "Fire in the Water" - both of which are bound to be an instant fan favorites especially given the latter's placement in the film. It also produces a few fun new sounds, such as the song by Paul McDonald and Nikki Reed, "All I've Ever Needed," Passion Pit's "Where I Come From," and Pop Etc's "Speak Up." A new clip from The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2 has been released today, showing the scene between Bella (Kristen Stewart) and Edward (Robert Pattinson) when she first wakes up and checks out her new self in the mirror. She then gives Edward an embrace, and he reminds her that as a newborn she's much stronger than him now and it's her turn to play carefully. The scene is part of the total footage package from Part 2 debuted at Comic-Con over the summer, and the background music is Passion Pit's "Where I Come From. The previous snippets unveiled include Edward convincing the new coven vampires to join in his fight for freedom from the Volturi, Bella and Edward checking out their new cottage, a glimpse at Alec (Cameron Bright)'s numbing vapor power, Bella learning how to behave like a human being instead of a vampire, Bella...

Indie quartet Alt-j has won the 2012 Mercury Prize for its debut album, An Awesome Wave. The annual prize is awarded for the best album from Ireland and the United Kingdom. Alt-j joins Pj Harvey, Pulp, The xx, Arctic Monkeys, and Portishead among the ranks of Mercury Prize winners. This time around, though, none of the other nominees were particularly well known on this side of the pond. West coast music fans that want to check Alt-j out are in luck. The band is playing a short tour in December, including a show in Kansas City with Passion Pit. A ...

Nothing says punk rock like a little Bella and Edward, right?
In an uncharacteristic move for a band that used to be known for its punk lyrics and parental advisories, Green Day has included its song "The Forgotten" on the final "Twilight" soundtrack.
The newly released video for the track features a mashup of footage from "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2," and Green Day performances. "The Forgotten," which is a moody ballad reminiscent of the brooding love scenes between Bella and Edward, also appears on the band's upcoming album "¡Tre!," set to release Dec. 7.
The "Breaking Dawn Part 2" soundtrack, which debuts three days before the film's Nov. 16 release date, also includes songs by Passion Pit, Ellie Goulding, and Feist.

The video mixes footage from the final entry in the “Twilight” series with scenes of the band recording, hanging out and performing to massive crowds as Armstrong croons, “Don’t look away from the arms of love.” Much of Green Day’s new output recalls their three-minute pop/punk anthems from the ’90s, but “The Forgotten” is the type of big-ballad emoting the band has also long maintained in their arsenal, from “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)” to “Wake Me Up When September Ends.”
Much of the video’s movie footage displays Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) utilizing her newfound vampire powers, running, jumping and otherwise supernaturally powering through the lush forests fans have come to recognize from the series.
“The Forgotten” marks Green Day’s first foray into the world of “Twilight.” The soundtrack for the final “Twilight” film is set to arrive November 13, just three days before the movie hits theaters. Chop Shop and Atlantic Records put the Green Day track alongside contributions from Passion Pit, Feist and franchise co-star Nikki Reed (with husband Paul McDonald), among others.
“When we were asked to be part of the ‘Twilight: Breaking Dawn – Part 2′ soundtrack, we readily agreed because the films are an insane cultural phenomenon, and we have always been impressed with the way the ‘Twilight’ soundtracks are so carefully curated,” bassist Mike Dirnt recently told Yahoo! Movies’ MOVIEtalk.

Fun Size
Directed by: Josh Schwartz
Cast: Victoria Justice, Jane Levy, Thomas Mann, Thomas Middleditch, Jackson Nickoll
Running Time: 1 hr 30 mins
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: October 26, 2012
Plot: A high school girl (Justice) loses her younger brother (Nickoll) while being asked to babysit him on Halloween night.
Who’S It For? Fun Size is a rockier PG-13 than one might expect, so parents should keep that in mind before loading up the van with tweens and teens to multiplex world. For all you rebellious tweens, here’s something you might like.
Expectations: I had little idea of what to expect going in, except for the idea that this was Justice’s first movie. It’s always curious to see new headlining talent — would Justice prove herself to be something fresh? Is there any chance that this could be her Easy A?

Since 2003, Josh Schwartz has helped turn, among others, Blake Lively, Leighton Meester, Mischa Barton, Rachel Bilson, Adam Brody, Penn Badgley, Zachary Levi and Chace Crawford into television stars. Now 36, the writer-producer behind "The O.C.," "Gossip Girl" and "Chuck" -- as well as, perhaps, the mid-decade success of Death Cab For Cutie -- has taken his talents to the multiplex for the teen comedy "Fun Size."
Out on Oct. 26, "Fun Size" is a one-crazy-night movie about what happens when a high school senior named Wren (Nickelodeon star Victoria Justice) loses her kid brother on Halloween night. Aided by a snappy best friend (Jane Levy, doing her best Summer Roberts impression) and a love-lorn nerd (Thomas Mann), Wren must find her brother before her mother (Chelsea Handler) gets home for the night. "Fun Size" is a bit like "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" mixed with the Halloween party from "Mean Girls," but scored...

A wild night out needs to be accompanied by an appropriate soundtrack, and while the tunes compiled for "Fun Size" won't go down in history as one of the all time greats, it should turn some younger ears on to a least a few decent tracks. Oddly enough, the movie won't have it's own official soundtrack release, so instead we've pulled together a list of all the songs featured in the movie along with the samples, so you can hopefully find the one you're looking for. Providing the emotional backbone of the movie is Passion Pit, who get two songs from their latest album Gossamer in the movie. Marky Mark and Beastie Boys -- the latter of whom have a deeper connection to the plot -- offer some throwback tunes, while the seemingly out of place Josh Groban anchors a comic sequence. The rest is filled out by more indie...

“Well, when I first started writing the ‘Twilight’ screenplays, I was thinking of Michael’s songs the whole time I did it,” explained drummer (and jester) Nate Donmoyer when asked about how the band earned the honor when we caught up with them during their rehearsals for “Saturday Night Live.” “It was the main inspiration, so it worked out when he finally said ‘yes.’ ”
“I took about four films for me to finally say, ‘yes,’ and then I said ‘yes,’ ” added the band’s frontman and lyricist, Michael Angelakos. “And I wrote a song. And that’s that!”
The actual story behind the song is decidedly less glamorous, but as Angelakos explains, unbeknownst to him, his songwriting was fully aligned with the film — though it wasn’t until after recording the song that the band were treated to a screening. “You write the song before seeing the film, they don’t allow you to see the film, so I wrote a song about my own experiences, and it just so happened to correlate.”

Christina Applegate resuscitated a flatlining season of Saturday Night Live with her brilliant song and dance numbers this weekend.
The Up All Night actress last graced the SNL stage 19 years ago in her Kelly Bundy days, but looked right at home last night. She seemed to be over-selling herself during a few sketches, especially those that involved speaking in accent, but redeemed herself with song. And unlike last week’s dull treatment of the first presidential debate, the gang had a field day with last Thursday’s vice presidential debate.
The laugh-out-loud funny debate cold open set the tone for the entire episode.

NBC synergy alert! Christina Applegate is not only a great comedic actress known for starring in one of the funniest movies of all time (Anchorman) — she’s also headlining Up All Night, a Peacock sitcom with sleepy ratings. Will an appearance on SNL boost Up All Night’s low profile?
Maybe, maybe not. What really matters is that unlike last week’s host, Applegate is a known quantity when it comes to comedy. She may not have appeared on this show since her Kelly Bundy days, but in the past 19 years, Applegate has only gotten funnier — so it’s reasonable...
