Happy Model day! On Friday, Wallows released their third studio album Model, and celebrated its drop by sharing the video for the LP’s standout, “You (Show Me Where My Days Went).”
The Nina Ljeti-directed video sees the trio — Dylan Minnette, Braeden Lemasters, and Cole Preston — throwing paint on walls, ripping off wallpaper, and demolishing the inside of an apartment, but with the destruction playing in reverse. At the start, the three guys stand inside a completely damaged apartment, and as the video continues, the room returns to its original state.

Local Natives are back to announce their sixth album But I’ll Wait For You, due out April 19th.
But I’ll Wait For You is a companion piece from last year’s Time Will Wait For No One, and was conceived during the same sessions with producer John Congleton. The Los Angeles quintet says in a statement that the new album is “the second half of a large body of music we made together” and serves as “maybe not an answer to a question but an exhale to an inhale.” See below for the album’s artwork and tracklist.
As a preview of But I’ll Wait For You, Local Natives have shared the album’s lead single, “April,” along with the track’s music video. With signature dueling vocals from Kelcey Ayer and Taylor Rice, “April” is a breezy slice of reverb-ridden soft rock. The band uses a...

Their album isn’t out yet, but the boys of Wallows are ready to play it live. In arenas.
Rolling Stone can exclusively announce that Wallows — the alt-rock band made up of Dylan Minnette, Braeden Lemasters, and Cole Preston — will release its third album Model on May 24. On the 12-track LP, the trio lets go of the “anxious tendencies” of their past music, resulting in what they believe is their lightest project yet.

Mannequin Pussy’s I Got Heaven represents a number of notable firsts for the Philly band: It’s their first studio album in five years, their first with guitarist Maxine Steen, and the first they’ve written together as a unit in the studio. But I Got Heaven isn’t so much a reinvention as it is a reinvigoration—a doubling down on all of the things that make Mannequin Pussy one of the most electrifying rock bands working right now.
I Got Heaven feels at once spontaneous and meticulous, no doubt owing to the collaborative writing process and the steady hand of producer John Congleton. For the way they mix elements of hardcore, shoegaze, and power pop across their music, Mannequin Pussy have long defied strict categorization. And reflective of the band’s penchant for blurring genres, the new album remains fiercely focused on its singular theme of freedom.

Sleater-Kinney’s 2019 album The Center Will Not Hold attempted to modernize the band’s sound by, for one, enlisting St. Vincent as producer. Following the departure of drummer Janet Weiss, remaining members Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein’s self-produced follow-up, Path of Wellness, felt like a course correction—more in line with their established sound, if lacking the grit that characterized the band’s early efforts.
Little Rope leans even more toward hard rock, with an emphasis on dynamics. It’s an approach that’s apparent from the opening “Hell,” whose desolate musings—“Hell is just a signpost when you take a certain path”—are delivered almost a cappella. Guitar feedback swirls ominously, mostly on the first beat of each bar, highlighting the confusion and upset of the lyrics. The song’s chorus serves as a cathartic, if ambiguous, release, with Tucker unleashing a mighty riot grrrl roar over thunderous...

Sleater-Kinney has released a new single, “Untidy Creature,” along with a music video for the track directed by Nick Pollet. The clip features Australian freediver Amber Bourke, who holds her breath in a bathtub for the duration of the introspective song.
On the track, the closing number on the band’s forthcoming 11th album, Little Rope, Corin Tucker sings, “But here’s too much here that’s unspoken/ And there’s no tomorrow in sight/ Could you love me if I was broken/ There’s no going back tonight.”

Philly band Mannequin Pussy have announced their new album, I Got Heaven, out March 1st via Epitaph Records. As a preview, they’ve shared the latest single, “I Don’t Know You.”
The group took a different approach to recording the project, convening in Los Angeles to collaborate with indie rock producer extraordinaire John Congleton rather than writing at home. “There was so much going on in our lives that it was the perfect opportunity to recalibrate who we were as people and musicians,” said bassist Colins “Bear” Regisford in a statement.
“When I’ve written songs, it’s usually a very solitary process,” added vocalist/guitarist Marisa Dabice. “So this was shedding a lot of those hermit-like qualities to do something intensively collaborative. Your best work comes when you allow other people into it.”
Pre-orders for I Got Heaven are ongoing. See the artwork and full tracklist below.

Mannequin Pussy are back with “I Got Heaven,” the Philly band’s first new music since their 2021 EP Perfect.
Produced by indie rock studio wiz John Congleton, “I Got Heaven” flips the idea of modern Christianity on its head — or, rather, strips it down to its core beliefs. If God’s creation was indeed perfect, Mannequin Pussy seem to argue: Why treat anything, ourselves included, as anything less than divine? “Oh I got heaven inside of me/ Oh I’m an angel I was sent here/ To keep you company,” vocalist Marisa Dabice proclaims, her voice flitting between an ethereal soprano and a gritty, punky roar.
“‘I Got Heaven’ is a song intended to merge the sacred and the profane and to serve as a reminder that we are all perfect exactly as we have been made and that no one gets to decide how a life should or should not be lived,...

Black Pumas are back with the announcement of their highly-anticipated second album, Chronicles of a Diamond, which is out October 27th via Ato. The psych-rock duo are celebrating the news with its lead single “More Than a Love Song.”
The follow-up to their smash 2019 self-titled debut, Chronicles of a Diamond promises “more power, passion, and daring originality than ever before” from the band. It was produced by Black Pumas’ own Adrian Quesada along with additional production from bandmate Eric Burton and John Congleton. Pre-orders are ongoing.
Previously teased in some of their live shows, “More Than a Love Song” is built on a jangly groove and fleshed out with some orchestral strings, bold electric guitar riffs, and a gospel choir. It offers some sage advice about widening one’s perspective on life: “This life is more than a dream, more than a fantasy, more than a little bit,” Burton sings.

Local Natives are giving us something to wait for with the announcement of their forthcoming fifth studio album Time Will Wait for No One, out July 7th via Loma Vista. As a preview, the indie rock veterans have shared its lead single “Nye,” as well as a run of accompanying 2023 tour dates.
For their first album in four years, Local Natives turned to heavyweight producer John Congleton, who helped the band navigate the “time of metamorphosis” that inspired the new music: “Former selves [melted] away as some of us became fathers, endured periods of isolation, loss, and identity crisis,” the band explain in a press release. “The highs and lows we were feeling at the same time were so extreme… As individuals and as a band, we were on the verge of a collapse.”
The statement goes on: “Time flows on uncontrollably and change is relentless, and the people you love are the only constants.

Up-and-coming indie rock group Wallows took the stage at The Late Late Show to perform their single “Are You Bored Yet?” with the help of band leader Reggie Watts. The track comes off the Los Angeles group’s debut album Nothing Happens, which dropped March 22 via Atlantic.
In the clip, the musicians are joined onstage midway through the introspective performance by Watts, who fill sin for Clairo, the single’s guest vocalist. The shimmery indie number gets even moodier in the stage’s all blue lights, where the band performs...

A cover of the Oscar-winning “Shallow,” a powerful anthem by one half of Sugarland and an uplifting message song by a nameless, faceless collective of Nashville artists help make up the tracks you need to hear this week.
Jimmie Allen & Abbey Anderson, “Shallow”
A Star Is Born‘s show-stealing power ballad won big at this year’s Oscars, taking home a trophy for Best Original Song. On this cover, country upstarts Jimmie Allen and Abby Anderson revamp the Lady Gaga/Bradley Cooper original with vocal acrobatics and country-pop polish, turning...

Debbie Harry has finally finished her long-in-the-works memoir, Face It, which she expects will come out in the second half of 2020. “I talk a bit about my internal functions — not biological but mental,” the Blondie frontwoman, 73, tells Rolling Stone. “It’s more personal.”
The book will “weave through” her life story, she says, and will trace the ups and downs of her band, including her marriage to guitarist Chris Stein and his struggle with the disease pemphigus, as well as how they carried on. “It’s such a long period of time,...

A blender explodes, a man plays pool with a golf club and a disco ball crashes during a strange, dreamy trip to a karaoke bar in Wallows’ new video for “Are You Bored Yet?”
The track captures a couple battling communication problems. The song opens with, “what’s wrong?/You’ve been asking, but I don’t have an answer.” “If you could tell me how you’re feeling,” Clairo retorts, “Maybe we’d get through this undefeated.” Lies and misdirections continue to mount. While the couple appears to stumble forward,...

Over the past decade, Sharon Van Etten has emerged as one of the most viscerally potent songwriters around, able to create gigantic-feeling songs that can have Taylor Swift levels of steely-eyed romantic recrimination: “The moral of the story is, don’t lie to me again,” she warned with scathing clarity on her early standout “Consolation Prize”; it’s the kind of line that’d leave whoever she’s singing to sleeping with one eye open.
Van Etten started out playing hushed, disgruntled folk rock, so she often gets tagged as an “indie” artist.

Washington, D.C. punk firebrands Priests will return this spring with their second full-length album, The Seduction of Kansas. The follow-up to their 2017 debut, Nothing Feels Natural, is out April 5th on Sister Polygon Records, the band’s independent self-run label.
Priests recorded The Seduction of Kansas in Dallas with producer John Congleton, who’s helped indie-rock artists like St. Vincent and Sharon Van Etten leap forward into arty, brainy pop in recent years. Something similarly exciting seems to be afoot with Priests’ new album, judging by the great title track,...

Amanda Palmer is back with an ambitious new song, “Drowning In the Sound,” which addresses everything from the internet to climate change to the #MeToo movement and how it all contributes to this bizarre sociopolitical moment. The song a dynamic piece of orchestral pop filled with unexpected instrumental turns, yet anchored by Palmer’s urgent vocals. Her lyrics match the song’s dire tone as she touches on everything from the #MeToo movement to fake news, while keeping an eye on the ultimate catastrophe: “And my children are so heavy,...

In April, Kimbra released Primal Heart, a slick electronic pop album teeming with sharp hooks. She’s been tinkering with the results ever since.
She took “Version of Me,” a brooding, self-castigating ballad from the piano-and-microphone school, and reworked it with simmering harmonies from the singer Dawn Richard. “Top of the World,” a thunking, sing-song record co-produced by Skrillex, was re-released with a new rap verse from Snoop Dogg. On Friday, Kimbra also releases a new Ep that takes four other Primal Heart tracks and whittles them down to acoustic murmurs,...

Sharon Van Etten ventures into dark, cinematic dance-rock with “Comeback Kid,” the lead single from her newly announced fifth LP, Remind Me Tomorrow, out January 18th, 2019 via Jagjaguwar.
The singer-songwriter, known primarily for her guitar- and piano-driven arrangements, shifts into full-on synth mode with “Comeback Kid,” crooning over whirring keys and a jagged, tumbling drum groove. “Hey, you’re the comeback kid, see me look away/ I’m the runaway,” she sings, the first of several fragmented lyrics.
