Ben Caplan has said that Call the Midwife will go through a "big change" in its fourth series.
The actor, who plays Police Constable Peter Noakes, told Digital Spy that the departure of Jessica Raine as Nurse Jenny Lee and move into the 1960s marks a new era in the BBC period drama.
"It was sad to see her go, but she wanted to move over to pastures new," Caplan said.
"I also respected her decision that she'd done the show and got what she needed to get out of it, so it was time to move on.
"It'll be interesting to see how we progress, but it will progress! The show is obviously bigger than one element of it."
Caplan added: "It will be different not having her around, but I'm excited to see how it changes - particularly as we're moving into a new era - we're moving into the '60s.

The cast of 'Call The Midwife' have admitted they struggle to hide their emotions thanks to the heart-warming script of the hit BBC show.
The inhabitants of Nonnatus House, whose task is to bring babies into the world, are back for a nativity-themed festive special on Christmas Day.
And the latest emotional storylines involve an under-age pregnancy and a broken old lady in need of care.
Miranda Hart plays Chummy, who helps deal with one particularly emotionally-charged situation involving an under-age pregnancy and the effect it has on the young girl and her family.
"She helps a young girl who fell pregnant deal with the shame of telling her parents and potentially having to give the child up for adoption," explained Miranda. "It was very moving. And the actress who played the part was so young but so mature and a brilliant actress already."
