“Babes” is a hilarious riff on women friendships/bonding and an unexpected pregnancy. Eden and Dawn (Michelle Buteau) are besties, having grown up together in New York City, and are now firmly in different phases of adulthood. Women are humanities original 3-D printers! We can grow humans inside our bodies. However, that’s just the beginning of the journey of motherhood as things get much more difficult from there. Who better then to portray the ups and downs of raising children than Better Things creator Pamela Adlon, director of Babes and written by half of the Broad City creator duo Ilana Glazer, and co-writer Josh Rabinowitz. The complexities of modern motherdom are mined for both humor and pathos, but despite its noble intentions and moments of insight, the film often veers into the realm of the cringe-worthy rather than crafting the poignant commentary one might hope for from such a talented team.
The story centers on Eden (Glazer) and Dawn (Michelle Buteau), childhood best friends whose lives have diverged yet remain intertwined through their shared experiences of womanhood and growing up in NYC. Dawn, a meticulous dentist...

Transitioning the naturalistic comic sensibilities that made Better Things a success, Pamela Adlon’s feature debut Babes manages to co-opt the rhythms of a romantic comedy to explore the relationship between two best friends at opposite points of their lives.
Eden and Dawn (Michelle Buteau) have been friends for 27 years. Married with one child and another on the way, Dawn seemingly has her life together, whereas Eden runs a yoga studio out of her apartment and doesn’t imagine settling down anytime soon. After an opening that sees Dawn go into labor during a ritual Thanksgiving-morning movie, Eden has a meet-cute with charismatic actor Claude (Stephan James). One midnight subway ride and sexual encounter later, Eden finds herself pregnant and staring down raising a baby alone. With her pregnancy she begins to increasingly lean on Dawn, who struggles with her husband Marty (Hasan Minhaj) to raise two children and balance a career.

Put Ilana Glazer in a comedy set in New York City and we’ll be sat, no questions asked. For “Babes,” Glazer teamed up to co-write, produce, and star in Pamela Adlon‘s feature directorial debut, a laugh-out-loud coming-of-age buddy comedy following life-long best friends (Glazer and Michelle Buteau) as they navigate different phases of adulthood through the lens of pregnancy. IndieWire caught up with the team and stars behind the film at its New York City premiere on Tuesday, May 14.

Almost ten years after the incident, Tarek Albaba's “36 Seconds: Portrait of a Hate Crime” unearths a fatal night on February 2015 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. In 36 seconds, the lives of three Muslim American students – newlyweds Deah Shaddy Barakat and Yusor Mohammad Abu-Salha, and Yusor's sister Razan – were swiftly taken by their neighbor, allegedly because of a parking dispute. Peppered with interviews with the heartbroken family, various recreations, and even a Hasan Minhaj cameo, the documentary insists that the incident was a hate crime, not a simple squabble over a parking space.
We had the privilege to speak with Tarek Albaba over Zoom on the occasion of CAAMFest 2024. Albaba has worked in the industry for over 20 years, but this film marks his directorial debut. As we navigated his first feature, we discussed the delicate balance between memorializing the victims, maintaining a call-to-action, and Palestinian solidarity in these fraught times.

I’ll admit I doubted a third Tron movie would ever happen, but I’m thankful to be proven wrong. After kicking off production at the start of the year, Tron: Ares has wrapped production and director Joachim Rønning has shared a handful of photos on Instagram.

“That’s a wrap on Tron: Ares,” Rønning wrote. “Thanks to an incredible and tireless crew, I really believe we pushed the filmmaking limits on this movie. Even through six weeks of night shoots you never slowed down. Also, a big thank you to our wonderful cast for leaving everything on screen. I can’t wait to show the world what we’ve done.” You’ll note that some of the photos contain blurred-out elements, with one seemingly covering up a Light Cycle.

“We’ve all failed in our lives, but have you ever failed so bad, you bring back Jon Stewart?” Minhaj mused yesterday at the Netflix is a Joke comedy festival.
“I saved a dying institution,” Minhaj added. “You’re welcome.”
For those not following along, after an extended on-air audition process, Comedy Central had reportedly chosen Minhaj to be Trevor Noah’s successor at The Daily Show last summer and planned to make the announcement at the conclusion of the Writers Strike.
Before that could happen, The New Yorker published a widely-shared article that accused Minhaj of embellishing his confessional-style standup material with exaggerations and falsehoods. Although Minhaj later responded with his side of the story and a fact-check of the New Yorker’s fact-check, by then Comedy Central had reportedly backed away from Minhaj amid the controversy.

Jordan Klepper will be at the desk in place Stewart Monday night and will host through Wednesday.
Stewart is set to play L.A.’s Greek Theatre Friday night for a night of standup under the stars that’s being billed as “Jon Stewart and Friends.”
He’s also on the guest list for John Mulaney’s “Everybody’s in L.A.” miniseries, and we wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up sitting down with another semi-retired Late Nighter as a series of comedy legends are expected to participate in a show Netflix is calling “Gods of Comedy With David Letterman.”

The graveyard of shows that have attempted to bring something resembling the late-night format to streaming is vast.
Even as subscription streaming services have become the de facto leader in producing original television content, late night remains one nut that the likes of Netflix, Apple TV+, and Peacock have failed to crack.
It’s not for lack of talent. Jon Stewart, Chelsea Handler, Michelle Wolf, Hasan Minhaj, Amber Ruffin, and Joel McHale have all taken turns behind the proverbial desk for different streamers, but none have made enough of a dent to stick around for more than a season or two.
Why streamers keep trying is no wonder. Talk shows are inexpensive to produce, and if one were to be genuinely successful, it could help combat the dirtiest of words in streaming: churn.

With those strikes over, filming is finally underway. Earlier today, we heard a quote from cast member Cameron Monaghan (Gotham), who said this film will “really push forward what can be done, from a visual perspective.” Now, we have another quote about the movie – and this is the one that every Tron fan has been waiting to hear. The filming of Tron: Ares, the third movie in the Tron franchise, is currently underway, as director Joachim Rønning and his cast are preparing for the planned 2025 release. On the other hand, while the cast members have been more or less known, their roles (save for the protagonist) are still undisclosed, which means that casting updates will be frequent as more details are revealed.
And while we’ve been expecting some updates on the names of the confirmed cast members, we’ve actually received a pretty amazing scoop instead, as it has officially been confirmed that the series’ legend, Jeff Bridges, is indeed returning to the franchise and will appear in the third movie as well!

Jeff Bridges reveals he is all set to return to the Tron series that he helped to establish all the way back in 1982, for Tron: Ares.
After many years of waiting, Tron: Ares, a sequel to 2010’s Tron: Legacy, is finally in production. Tron: Legacy's director Joseph Kosinski hasn’t returned and neither have any of the film’s stars – well, apart from one (you can probably guess who it is from the headline). It doesn’t even look like Daft Punk will be returning to give us another memorable score for the third film in the Tron franchise.
It’s not quite all-new though, with reports stating that Jeff Bridges is all set to make an appearance in the film. Bridges himself revealed the news on the Film Comment podcast, stating that he was excited to be working with Jared Leto, the star of Tron: Ares.

Jeff Bridges is getting digitized once again. The actor revealed that he will be returning for “Tron: Ares,” the third “Tron” movie set for release in 2015 and will star Jared Leto.
Bridges revealed the news on the Film Comment podcast on Friday, saying that he headed out over the weekend to film a part for the threequel and was even anxious about working with an actor like Leto.
“Jared Leto is the star of this third one. I’m really anxious to work with him. I’ve admired his work,” Bridges said.
Bridges reprised his role as Kevin Flynn in 2010’s “Tron: Legacy” after he first appeared in the groundbreaking 1982 video-game movie. “Legacy” aimed to push another technical visual effects boundary by de-aging his character, with Bridges playing himself and his younger avatar. Jeff Bridges is going back to the grid.
The 74-year-old actor told the Film Comment podcast (via The Playlist) that he is going to appear in “Tron: Ares,” the third film in the long-running sci-fi franchise that Bridges inaugurated with “Tron” in 1982 and reprised with “Tron: Legacy” in 2010. The new film stars Jared Leto as the titular character Ares, with Joachim Rønning (“Maleficent: Mistress of Evil”) directing from a script by Jesse Wigutow and Jack Thorne.
“I’m heading off this Saturday to play a part in the third installment of the ‘Tron’ story,” Bridges said. “Jared Leto is the star of this third one. I’m really anxious to work with him. I’ve admired his work.”
“Tron” is best known for pioneering the use of computer generated imagery, which was used to create the digital world of a video game after Bridges’ character, Kevin Flynn, is zapped inside one.

The originalTRON movie premiered in 1982, and it became one of the most popular sci-fi films of the era and is now considered a cult classic. Its sequel, Tron: Legacy, was released in 2010 and received mixed reviews, but Disney still decided to continue the series, and Tron: Ares, the third movie in the series, is set to come out on October 10, 2025, as we have reported earlier. And while there is still some time before the movie’s premiere, the actors involved are discussing the work on the movie, and from what Cameron Monaghan, one of the movie’s main stars, said, we are in for an exciting sequel.
Plans for a third movie started emerging back in 2010 after Legacy, but several ideas and projects were scrapped before it was confirmed in 2022 that the movie was still happening and production was set to begin in 2023, although was originally postponed indefinitely due to the SAG-AFTRA strike.

Welcome back to the Grid, user. Disney is finally following up their cult franchise with a new entry, Tron: Ares. While the new entry in the series does not seemingly feature the Flynn family, at least for now, their legacy will be put into further question as a sophisticated program escapes from the game and ventures into our world. Jared Leto, who had a big swing and a miss with his last franchise attempt, Morbius, is heading up the cast for this continuation. Disney recently unveiled details of Tron: Ares‘ release at last week’s CinemaCon.
Cbr.com has reported on an on-set video taken during a night shoot on the production. The video was posted to social media and seems to show a scene that takes place in a city street with cars stalled in the middle of the road. Jared Leto is seen in full view in his character’s costume.

On his Netflix series “Patriot Act,” Hasan Minhaj once laid in to TurboTax. Now he’s teamed with Sen. Elizabeth Warren to promote an alternative filing option for taxpayers as the April 15 deadline approaches.
Last month, the IRS and Treasury Department partnered on the launch the Direct File Pilot Program, which provides an option for taxpayers in 12 states to file basic income tax returns directly with the IRS rather than through an alternative online service. The program is being tested in a dozen states this year with the goal of rolling it out nationally next year. About 19 million taxpayers have the option of using the pilot program this year.
Warren (D-Mass.) posted a video collaboration with Minhaj April 9 on X, formerly known as Twitter, to promote the new option for people who don’t file complicated itemized returns.

When Tron first appeared in 1982, it became one of the most popular sci-fi films of the era and is now considered a cult classic. A sequel, Tron: Legacy, was released in 2010 and received mixed reviews, but that did not stop Disney from producing yet another sequel. Tron: Ares is set to be the next installment in the series and will serve as a standalone sequel to the two previous movies. Production began in January 2024 and Disney has now confirmed the film’s official theatrical release date, which is going to happen on October 10, 2025!
Plans for a sequel started emerging back in 2010 after Legacy, but several ideas and projects were scrapped along the way and the sequel seemed to be stuck in developmental hell. In 2022, it was confirmed that the movie was still happening and production was set to begin in 2023, but was initially postponed indefinitely due to the SAG-AFTRA strike.

What if Ilana from “Broad City” was pregnant?
If you want to find out, watch the trailer for “Babes,” which Neon released on Thursday.
In the comedy film, which Ilana Glazer wrote with Josh Rabinowitz, the “Broad City” alum plays Eden, a proudly single, thirtysomething New Yorker who gets pregnant from a one-night stand and decides to keep the baby. She relies on her best friend Dawn (Michelle Buteau), a married mother of two, for help. It’s going to be a very challenging process, and not even Dawn is sure Eden will be able to pull it off. The humor seems like a more grown-up version of the chaotic whimsy Glazer brought to “Broad City,” her beloved Comedy Central sitcom.
“Babes” is directed by “Better Things” creator Pamela Adlon in her feature directorial debut. The cast also includes Hasan Minhaj, John Carroll Lynch, Stephan James, Oliver Platt, the Lucas brothers,...
