- Keola Simpson studied acting at Fullerton College, earned a BA in directing from California State University, Fullerton, and an MFA in directing from the University of Hawai'i at Manoa.
- Keola Simpson was the recipient of the 2021 David Mark Cohen Playwriting Award and the 2021 Kennedy Center's Citizen Artist Award for his play I'm Lot Lane (a solo effort). He was also a nominee for the 2022 United States Artist Fellowship (theatre), which he, deservedly, did not win.
