Shia Labeouf recently made headlines for reportedly marrying girlfriend Mia Goth in a ceremony presided over by an Elvis impersonator. Though it was later reported that the event was just a “commitment ceremony,” nothing about this is surprising. In fact, it would have been more surprising for Labeouf to have a simple City Hall ceremony attended by friends and family, given his track record. Let’s take a look back at some of that track record now — it’ll be a pre-wedding scrapbook of sorts.

In the Shakespeare canon, Cymbeline is a late play and a long play: by line count, the third longest, with 3,753. (The Comedy of Errors has less than half as many.) Some of those lines are genius, the pungency of their imagery distilled by years of know-how and undiluted by the passage of centuries: The English Channel is a “salt-water girdle,” desire a “tub both filled and running.” But, like a turducken, Cymbeline keeps you asking, even as you swallow it, “What the heck is this?” Categorically, it’s a late romance, a term that seems to mean “hodgepodge of craziness” and that usually involves some combination of potions, false deaths, changeling princes, and gender shenanigans. Cymbeline has them all; as a result, in production, it’s usually just incoherent. What a difference a director makes! Daniel Sullivan’s production for the Public Theater provides not only a delightful evening in...

Over the past ten years or so, starting with his work on HBO’s lamentably short-lived Deadwood and continuing with memorable roles in indies such as Winter’s Bone, Martha Marcy May Marlene and The Sessions, John Hawkes has carved a significant reputation as a protean screen actor, as capable of conveying glinting menace as gentle humanity. It’s rewarding to observe that his lean physicality and haunted everyman expressiveness are no less compelling in his New York stage debut. Add in a flinty co-starring performance from Tracie Thoms and a dependable director like Daniel Sullivan, and you have the makings

Timing is everything. Donald Margulies respectfully raids the Chekhovian thematic pantry in The Country House, which arrives on Broadway in an elegant production staged with customary polish by Daniel Sullivan and starring Blythe Danner in a role that overlaps with her own professional history. But coming in the wake of Christopher Durang's far more illuminating contemporary riff on the Russian master, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, seriously undercuts the usefulness of this engaging, if rather safe, middlebrow entertainment. Appropriating elements drawn primarily from The Seagull and Uncle Vanya, Margulies' Chekhov excursion is a vast improvement on the lame-
