While on active duty, took night classes and received an MBA from Boston University in 1980. Received a M.A./J.D. in 1989 from Regent University under a joint degree program. During his studies, interned under Congressman Jerry Lewis (R-California).

- McDonnell and his wife Maureen were found guilty of public corruption on September 4, 2014. In January 2015, he was sentenced to two years in prison, whilst persecutors had sought a 6,5 year prison term. His wife got one year.
