The MCU made Oscar history this year as Angela Bassett earned the franchise its first-ever acting nomination for her supporting turn as Queen Ramonda in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” This was the sequel to “Black Panther,” which was the first film in the franchise to reap a Best Picture bid.
So often, the MCU is consigned to visual effects and sound categories at the Academy Awards. For both “Black Panther” movies to break through in key categories (plus double wins for Ruth E. It’s not often that the villain’s theme is transformed into the hero’s music in a comic book movie. But that’s what happens in “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” and there’s solid reasoning behind it.
Composer Joel P West spent two full years thinking about, writing and recording the score for the latest Marvel movie. It’s almost impossible not to recognize the plot points and dramatic beats being depicted in Just Mercy. At the same time, it’s nearly as difficult to not be affected by them. Such is the case when a familiar tale is told exceedingly well and impeccably acted. Earnest, wearing its heart on its sleeve, and fully believing in the power of its story, this movie is more than just an eventual feel good tale. A foster care facility filled with various at-risk teens may sound like an intimidating place, and it certainly can be, but the realistic and sensitive way director Destin Cretton approaches the material makes audiences want to go behind the walls of Short Term 12, and what they find there may be surprising. The innocence conveyed through composer Joel P. West’s simple guitar plucks suggest things are not as scary at Short Term 12 as it may first seem. Sure, some kids try to break free from the facility by running at breakneck speed towards the front gates, but there is a comfort and true sense of security perfectly reflected in West’s score that suggests a different reality. The key for music in a film like Short Term 12, which features many moving elements — stunning performances, beautiful cinematography from Brett Pawlak, strong writing — is to add to the narrative without overwhelming it. Following up his award winning short, Short Term 12, writer/director Destin Daniel Cretton returned to Sundance the following year with another personal reflection, this time on the San Diego indie scene through the eyes of young musician desperately trying to cope with his mother’s passing. The title I Am Not A Hipster suggests a focus on image and perception, which in fleeting instances come to fruition, but the film is really a heartfelt meditation on loss, loneliness, and art’s curious ability to both help process the past or flatly provide phlegmatic entertainment. Cretton’s feature is a work of deep emotion that showcases a breakout performance by Dominic Bogart and a wonderful original soundtrack by Joel P. West that stands center stage.

A dubious term to be sure, it seems that one of the pre-reqs for hipster certification is denying that you actually are one. Based on this criterion, Brook, the main character in Destin Daniel Cretton’s feature debut, definitely qualifies. But I Am Not a Hipster is not so much concerned with labels as it is with crafting an intimate, small-scale character portrait. Adrift in San Diego’s music scene, Brook’s lackadaisical lifestyle is interrupted when his family visits with the intention of spreading his late mother’s ashes. Cretton, who made a splash at Sundance in 2009 with his Grand Jury Prize winning short Short Term 12, has employed the musical talents of singer-songwriter Joel P. West to help bring to life this introspective exploration of a character, a music scene, and a subculture.
