Apple Vision Pro, a $3,500 mixed reality headset with strong “Google Glass 2.0” vibes, is now on sale, and it has already proved as divisive as its failed predecessor. On one side are the multitude of haters dismissing the bulky computer goggles as “stupid.” On the other is an army of tech influencers and Apple zealots who don’t mind looking stupid as long as they get to feel like the hero of a sci-fi movie (while racking up social media engagement).

The term “creator economy” now defines a multi-billion dollar industry occupied by influencers, agents, managers, artists, producers, and many other professionals. Despite the rapid growth of that sector, it remains undercounted by the U.S. Census Bureau. A report in The Washington Post reveals that the Bureau’s industry and occupation indexes include no mentions of the phrase “social media.”
The Bureau recognizes esoteric fields like “pickled onion manufacturing” and “canary raising,” but it pigeonholes social media creators into ill-fitting groups like “online video game playing” (which is defined as “data processing”) and “social media specialist” (which is more of a marketing title than a creator descriptor). An official with the Bureau of Labor Statistics told WaPo that creators could be classified as “public relations specialists” or “independent artists, writers and performers.”

As the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes rage on, digital native creators are recognizing the need for more organized labor in the online video space. The Creators Guild of America (Cga), a nonprofit organization backed by YouTube legend Justine Ezarik (a.k.a. iJustine), is looking to that need.
The Cga officially launched on August 24. It resembles a labor union, but it’s actually a “professional service organization” that provides a litany of benefits to a varied roster of digital media pros. The Cga does not engage in collective bargaining on behalf of its members, but some of its services — such as creator advocacy and networking opportunities — are decidedly union-esque.
Those benefits are not limited to creators. On its website, the Cga provides a list of creatives who are eligible for guild membership, including videographers, designers, marketers, and editors. By joining up with the org, those professionals can ensure that they...

"I went to [an emergency clinic] and a nurse looked at it. She's like, 'We're not equipped to handle that.'" She added, "I went from [being] perfectly fine to almost [dying] in the course of a few...

A lot of us have picked up new hobbies while in quarantine, and Captain Marvel actress Brie Larson has just revealed hers to the world. The Oscar-winning star has started up a YouTube channel today, which she intends to employ for social activism, as a way of putting her “privilege and platform” to good use.
In her 21-minute long first video, Larson speaks about why she’s decided to use YouTube as her platform on which to speak out. She promised “deep conversations” in future vlogs, but teased that there will also be some “silly content” as she “expresses [her]self personally.”
“YouTube has been a place [where] I have learnt so much,” the Captain Marvel star says. “Whether it’s been how to use my printer or it’s been watching how to be a considerate activist… This is the place to talk about things that are important and that matter.

Escape The Night -- the longest-running original in YouTube history -- has just announced the star-studded cast set to headline its four season.
The upcoming season of the murder-mystery reality series will be an all-star season -- meaning that past cast members who failed to win will set to return for a second chance at survival. In Escape The Night, premiering July 11, YouTube creators take on different personas from a bygone era, and then compete in various challenges in order to remain the last one standing as various supernatural threats loom. The show often features quirky and comedic creators, given that it calls for a great deal of improvisation.
Joining Graceffa -- who serves as host of the show -- this season are: Rosanna Pansino (who will portray ‘The Socialite’), Alex Wassabi ('The Aviator'), Timothy DeLaGhetto ('The Con Man'), DeStorm Power ('The Enforcer'), Justine Ezarik ('The...

Fine Brothers Entertainment (Fbe), the digital media firm founded by YouTube luminaries Benny and Rafi Fine, has acquired Officially Penned -- an upstart that creates collectible pins in collaboration with top creators.
Officially Pinned was founded last spring by digital vet Max Benator and the Brooklyn-based artist Andrew Shuta. The company has since collaborated with 16 YouTubers to vend their own enamel pins, including Shane Dawson, Eva Gutowski, ASAPScience, Justine Ezarik, Kingsley, and Nikita Dragun.
The pin purveyor has created a total of 34 designs to date -- including Dawson sipping on root beer and a pink iPhone touting Ezarik’s ‘iJustine’ channel moniker -- and is ramping up its output with 10 launches slated to arrive in the next month alone. In addition to its creator-sanctioned pins, Officially Pinned also vends proprietary designs inspired by internet culture, like a rainbow donut and a recreation of the infamous World Record Egg. For those uninitiated to Disney pin trading, it’s a fascinating hobby with a cult following that the media giant has officially endorsed since 1999.
Collectors can purchase limited edition lapel pins -- of which there are more than 100,000 featuring popular Disney characters, attractions, and movies -- at parks across the globe, or online. Then, when visiting Disney resorts, collectors can approach staffers wearing specially-designated lanyards with their own collections affixed to propose a trade. If a guest proposes a trade, the Disney employee usually has to accept it -- and certain rare pins can command top dollar, re-selling for thousands of dollars on eBay and the like.
Today, a startup in the digital media sphere called Officially Pinned is seeking to replicate pin trading culture for devotees of the world’s biggest YouTube stars. Officially Pinned is the brainchild of Supergravity Pictures co-founder Max Benator and noted talent manager Sarah Weichel,...

John Krasinski’s thriller “A Quiet Place” made a lot of noise at the box office this weekend. And perhaps that’s apropos, since a lot of people have been complaining about loud moviegoers at their screenings of the film.
While it’s important to not text message, answer calls, talk or loudly eat popcorn and snacks that might annoy people and ruin the experience of a movie — no matter what you’re seeing — it’s especially true of “A Quiet Place.” The film, directed by and starring Krasinski, who co-leads with his wife Emily Blunt, is a horror movie about a family who live in silence, thanks to monsters that hunt whatever they can hear. And since nearly the whole movie is in silence with very little dialogue, literally every pin drop can send hearts racing.
TheWrap even made an etiquette video, urging theatergoers to be quiet during the movie. But it fell on, at least some, deaf ears. Based Twitter reaction, the film got ruined for a whole lot of people.
Gee, thanks.

Here in the week of E3, the videogame industry’s biggest conference, it’s time to ask if e-sports has finally broken through after years of underground but massive growth. It’s also time to wonder if Disney bet on the wrong horse when it bought Maker Studios instead of Twitch three years ago.
Yes, I know. If you’re over the age of 35, e-sports can seem mystifying. You likely can’t imagine anyone sitting in front of a TV (or computer) watching someone else sitting in front of a computer playing a video game. Even though the ratings might not be up to the President-elect's standards, the second episode of The Celebrity Apprentice season 8, titled "Fire Up That Chopper," delivers an okay amount of drama. The advisers this time include health expert and celebrity chef Rocco Dispirito and digital influencer (whatever that is) Justine Ezarik. The Governator's nephew and top aide Patrick Knapp Schwarzenegger is lurking around too but doesn't really do a whole lot of "top aiding."...

Jeana Smith and Jesse Wellens, the YouTube couple known as PrankvsPrank, announced an original series for YouTube Red last April.
And today, the couple -- who have amassed more than 19 million subscribers across three channels thanks to their uproariously ruthless pranks orchestrated against one another -- unveiled the trailer for Prank Academy. In the forthcoming series, they will go from pranksters to mentors, “teaching [celebrity guests] how to pull off their most ambitious and complicated pranks yet,” according to a press release.
The show, which will feature cameos from YouTube stars Louis Cole, Justine Ezarik, Joey Graceffa, Lilly Singh, Charles Trippy and more, looks a little like the couple's YouTube videos on steroids. In one scene, Singh picks a WWE-style fight in a restaurant as fellow diners look on in horror. In another, Ezarik and Graceffa recoil on the set of a cooking show as a crew members’ clothes bursts into flames.

Well, folks, it looks like the "Deadpool" movie is too hot for China, which is a fact that will make some hardcore Deadpool fans rejoice. This time last year, it seemed unbelievable that we'd get an R-rated "Deadpool," and now not only do we have that, but it's turning out to be everything fans hoped it would be--including news that the film is so over-the-top that it's being banned.
THR is now reporting that "Deadpool" has been denied release in China due to its violence, nudity, and graphic nature. According to the article, China is usually able to work with studios to create cleaned-up version of R-rated flicks, but that the offensive material is so interwoven into the DNA of the film, that it's impossible to create a clean cut without creating all kinds of plot problems.

Alright, folks. It’s time to put any and all fears to rest in regards to Deadpool. It looks like Fox did it. They took the beloved comic book character, gave him his own R-rated outing and absolutely knocked it out of the freaking park. By all accounts, the Ryan Reynolds-led flick is a complete success, and we couldn’t be happier about it.
Though the film doesn’t hit theatres until February 12th, special screenings were held for fans in NYC and La today, and the reactions pouring out on Twitter are tremendously positive. Everyone seems to have fallen in love with it, with some people saying that Deadpool could be Marvel’s best movie yet.

On the cover, she's even sporting Steve's signature outfit -- a black turtleneck sweater and jeans -- while holding onto an old-school Apple computer. So, what was the inspiration behind her special tribute to Jobs? "It really started out as a joke," Justine told toofab's Brian Moreno at Comic-Con. In a land overrun by ruthless creatures that hunt by sound, even the faintest whimper can lead to your death in Tim Lebbon's The Silence, a new horror novel hitting shelves later this month. Titan Books has provided us with an exclusive excerpt from Lebbon's latest to share with Daily Dead readers, and we also have a look at two recent 31 images revealed by Rob Zombie, as well as details on the zombie series, Fight of the Living Dead, which is now available to watch in its entirety on BlackBoxTV.
Tim Lebbon's The Silence: "In the darkness of a underground cave system, blind creatures hunt by sound. Then there is light, there are voices, and they feed... Swarming from their prison, the creatures thrive and destroy. To scream, even to whisper, is to summon death. As the hordes lay waste to Europe, a girl watches to see if they will cross the sea.

For Justine Ezarik (aka YouTube phenom iJustine), the decision to transition from making everyday - but hugely popular - videos to producing a feature-length documentary was more personal than business. It started when Ezarik, 30, befriended Lizzie Velasquez on Instagram. Though YouTube turned Ezarik into a star, Velasquez encountered a very different, cruel reception - at just 17 years old she stumbled across a video with 4 million views that dubbed her the "Ugliest Woman in the World" because of a rare syndrome that prevents her from gaining weight. Velasquez took up the mantle of combating Internet bullies, and she and Ezarik eventually crossed paths.

The online masses know Justine Ezarik (aka iJustine) wouldn’t be the same without the Internet at her fingertips. Now the social media star wants to use her electronic know-how to teach older adults how to use technology in the “Grandparents Gone Wired” campaign. The campaign is a joint effort between iJustine, DoSomething.org, and the Mentor Up initiative of the Aarp Foundation. “Grandparents Gone Wired” encourages teens to teach seniors in their local communities the current tech trends and electronics (like smartphones, email, video chat, and social media) so the older adults can become technologically independent and stay connected to loved ones. This is the second year DoSomething.org and Mentor Up have run the campaign. This year, iJustine joined the two organizations’ push for older adult tech education, more than a fitting match for the geek gal who's currently the host of her own show Hardwired on AOL.

On November 20th, Katniss Everdeen will reintroduce herself to moviegoers with the release of Mockingjay - Part 1, the latest film in the Hunger Games franchise. And the marketing efforts for the flick are catching fire.
The Hunger Games is almost as big on YouTube as it is at the box office, and film distributor Lionsgate is taking advantage of that appeal by striking a partnership with Google. The studio worked with Google's Art, Copy & Code and the team at YouTube Space La to develop District Voices, a five-part video series set in the world of Panem.
Each video in the District Voices series was filmed at YouTube Space La, and will be distributed through Capitol TV, a web video platform and "the government-sanctioned television network of The Hunger Games." The videos profile various elements of the Hunger Games world, and each one feature YouTube content creators in starring roles.
