Indie developer Terry Cavanagh ( “Vvvvvv” and “Super Hexagon”) is creating his third commerical game, “Dicey Dungeons,” he revealed on his blog Tuesday.
Cavanagh said he’s been working on “Dicey Dungeons” for nearly three months. Details on it are scarce right now. It’s apparently rogue-like with three playable classes. As the player moves about the dungeon, they use six-sided dice to determine damage during combat. The game will likely have a total of six classes in the final build.
“You can also expect the final build to have a Lot more polish, much better balance and a lot more content,” he said. “Once I have the six final classes, my focus will be on making those as good as they can be.”
Cavanagh said he’s currently searching for an artist and a musician to add to the team, and he believes the project will take another three months to develop.

One of the most prestigious award ceremonies in the industry, The Gold Joystick Awards is back for its 31st year, and voting is open now for the public. This time, however, things have changed a little.
Categories for games have been altered, and instead of the previous genre-specific categories, 2013's awards will feature the likes of 'Most Wanted', 'Best Indie Game' and 'Best Storytelling'. Indie title, Hotline Miami leads the pack with six nominations, meaning it could run away with the lion's share.
This year's awards will be hosted by comedian, Ed Byrne, in London on October 25, and below you'll find the full list of categories and nominees...

In the lead up to the release of Ouya, and through my time testing it for my review, the one question that kept popping into my head was, "who is this for?" It's fair to ask the same question of the other consoles that are either on the market, or soon to be, but those consoles have dedicated fanbases, a portion of which will by anything with the right logo on it. Ouya is an entirely new machine, and subsequently, it's for an entirely new audience. Sure, there were all those Kickstarter supporters, but even with 63,416 fans, that's not enough to sustain a console in perpetuity.
In fact, when I was given the opportunity to speak with Julie Uhrman, Ouya's Founder, on June 25, the day that the console launched, that was one of the first thing I asked her.
"Core gamers are going to love Ouya. There's games that are exclusive to Ouya,...

Want to know what games the Independent Games Festival picked as their nominees in their top categories this year?
Hit the jump to see what categories "Hundreds," "Hotline Miami," and more got nominated for.
I haven't been able to pick out a particular pattern among this year's Igf nominees in terms of genre or game type--it's a pretty open and diverse field. I will say many of the entries here make me consider heading over to Steam, iTunes, and other handy download services today to catch up on a bunch of under-the-radar titles from 2012 that I missed.
Here's the final list of nominees:
Excellence In Visual Art
Incredipede (Northway Games and Thomas Shahan)
Kentucky Route Zero (Cardboard Computer)
Guacalamelee! (Drinkbox Studios)
Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime (Asteroid Base)
Year Walk (Simogo)
Honorable mentions: Fly'n (Ankama Play); Eleven (Christoffer Hedborg, Datahowler); The Bridge (Ty Taylor and Mario Castaneda); Thomas Was Alone (Mike Bithell,...

The majority of video game soundtracks are nothing to write home about. Most of them do an admirable job of setting the mood for a game (e.g., Giacchino’s score for Call of Duty), but it’s rare for a game to have music so good you’ll take the time to listen to it outside of the game itself. A notable exception to this is Austin Wintory’s work on Journey, which has been nominated for a Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media Grammy.
In honor of Wintory’s nomination, here are 5 video game composers who deserve your attention.
1. Chipzel (Niamh Houston)
Anyone who has played Super Hexagon, the frustratingly difficult game designed by Terry Cavanagh, has already heard the frantic chip tunes of Niamh Houston, an Irish musician who uses Gameboy hacking software to create her unique sound. Chipzel’s music is seductive, the kind that makes...

In a refreshing twist on the seedy underbelly of the iOS cloning scene, indie developer Terry Cavanagh has given somewhat of a blessing to Open Hexagon, a slightly-tweaked version of his own Super Hexagon, a fast-paced action-puzzle game.
Vittorio Romeo developed Open Hexagon as a open-source, freeware tribute, according to the game's Facebook page. "I want to make clear that the resemblance to the original game is very high, even if it's not an exact clone," a statement reads.
"I've credited Terry Cavanagh everywhere I could, and I don't want my game to be competition, but a tribute to his work. I got his permission to make a 'Super Hexagon-inspired game,' I just hope this is not stretching it."
The biggest difference between the two games is that Open Hexagon allows users to "manipulate time, patterns, parameters, display messages and even change levels using simple commands.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
Ten seconds into your first go on Super Hexagon you’ll be faced with a game over screen. Ten seconds after that you’ll probably see another. Within a couple of minutes you might lose track of how many times you’ve heard the words “Game Over” droned at you, cutting short each playthrough with all the tenderness of a punch in the face. Half an hour later you probably won’t care much, as you try and hold yourself back from tapping that screen to retry yet again. That this comes from Terry Cavanagh, developer of masochistic indie puzzler Vvvvvv, shouldn’t surprise you; Super Hexagon shares its brutally addictive difficulty and retro sheen. But this is a step up in all the right ways.

At this time of year gamers are being treated to a heavy shower of high budget, triple-a titles; Modern Warfare 3, Battlefield 3 and Skyrim are among the colossal titles that have already hit shelves, with the likes of Zelda and Mass Effect just over the horizon. In these chaotic, modern times it is important to try not to buy every single game, although it may seem to be the logical thing to do but budgets must be kept in order to feed through Christmas. Art Perspective suggests saving some money, waiting until those big games come down in price, taking a deep breath and exploring the world of colourful Katamari!

Vvvvvv has been announced for the Nintendo 3Ds eShop. The game originally released on PC in late 2010 from indie developer Terry Cavanagh, gaining high praise for its exploration-based levels and innovative gravity-flipping gameplay. Captain Viridian, the game's main character, also appeared as an unlockable character in Super Meat Boy on PC. The Nintendo 3Ds version will include new features such as a level map on the lower screen, new levels, (more)...

This is Your Chance to Live The American Dream
Sometimes it can be hard to see the gaming industry as much more than the stream of high budget titles, but there is a whole world without any sort of budget; this is the land of indie gaming. Some of the most progressive, atmospheric and thought-provoking games of today are being created by one or two individuals, and usually released for free. This week Art Perspective takes a look at some of the games from Terry Cavanagh’s library. With many games free-to-play and relatively short, the collection on the site is well worth a look.
Cavanagh releases his games under the developer name of Distractionware, creating games, usually alone and collaborating with various composers for the sound track. Distractionware’s games are so special because the games are more concerned with the conceptual value and gameplay than their graphic prowess.

As the window for independent game makers widens, so the variety of expected material should also grow. Vvvvvv (or the The Letter V Six Times if you want to use your mouth) is the new title from Irish game artist Terry Cavanagh, who last year found himself praised for the artistically inspired Don’t Look Back. However, Vvvvvv, as off the beaten path as it may be, is Cavanagh’s most conventional title yet, by which I mean it plays like a conventional game and much the same asks that you pay for it. So, is Vvvvvv going to be the gravity defying indie breakthrough, or has Cavanagh floated back down to earth only to sell out, maaaaaan.
