The legendary sibling directing duo of Joel and Ethan Coen went their separate directorial ways after the 2018 film The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, and while there’s talk they’re going to be reuniting to make a horror movie, in the meantime we’ve gotten Joel’s first solo directing effort with The Tragedy of Macbeth, and we’ll be seeing Ethan’s first solo directing effort when Focus Features brings the road trip comedy caper Drive Away Dolls to theatres on February 23rd. Some critics have already had a chance to see the movie, and with two weeks to go until its wide release, the first reactions have started showing up online. We have gathered some of them together below.
First, we have a reaction from JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray:

Buckle up and get ready to hit the road with two young women who’ve stumbled upon a mysterious briefcase full of trouble! A new Drive-Away Dolls trailer is barreling down the information highway today, with plenty of kooky characters hitchhiking aboard the new comedy co-written by husband and wife duo Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke.
The Ethan Coen-directed comedy revolves around Jamie (Margaret Qualley), an uninhibited free spirit bemoaning yet another breakup with a girlfriend, and her timid friend Marian (Geraldine Viswanathan), who desperately needs to loosen up. In search of a fresh start, the two embark on an impromptu road trip to Tallahassee, but things quickly go awry when they cross paths with a group of inept criminals along the way.
Beanie Feldstein, Pedro Pascal, Colman Domingo, Bill Camp, and Matt Damon join Qualley and Viswanathan for Coen and Cooke’s unique crime caper, with Focus Features handling domestic distribution.

"Drive-Away Dolls" just feels like one of those movies that's utterly immune to spoilers. While a wholly original idea from one of our most exciting filmmakers around, the entire premise centers on a pair of misfits who stumble onto a criminal plot involving a mysterious briefcase and subsequently end up with a whole gaggle of bad guys on their tail. If that sounds familiar, well, it's basically a throwback to all kinds of exploitation films from decades past (particularly the '70s genre movies that director Ethan Coen would've grown up on). It also won't fail to bring up comparisons to one of the most celebrated movies of all time: "Pulp Fiction." Well, it looks Coen and his co-writer/partner Tricia Cooke wanted to get out in front of that, as this newest trailer for their wacky-looking comedy proves. And we couldn't be more excited about it.

Marvel Studios' "Thunderbolts" has suffered another setback. Actress Ayo Edebiri has exited the project, citing scheduling conflicts. The exit comes almost exactly a year after Edebiri's casting was announced. However, "Thunderbolts" has already found its replacement: Geraldine Viswanathan.
Reporting suggests that Edebiri's scheduling conflicts stem from production delays on "Thunderbolts." Filming was previously pushed back to accommodate the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike and Edebiri's commitments evidently no longer align with the revised "Thunderbolts" schedule. Steven Yeun, who was set to appear in "Thunderbolts" as Robert Reynolds/The Sentry, has exited the project for similar reasons (the part has since been recast with Lewis Pullman).
"Thunderbolts" adapts the Marvel comic of the same name, featuring semi-reformed supervillains working together. Think of it as the equivalent of DC's Suicide Squad, especially since the MCU will be including an Amanda Waller analogue in Countess Valentina Allegra De Fontaine (Julia Louis Dreyfus). The upcoming Marvel Studios production Thunderbolts is going to feature multiple actors from various previous Marvel films and TV shows reprising their roles. It’s got Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, Wyatt Russell as US Agent, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, and Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster… and if Thunderbolts had started filming last summer, as it was supposed to before the strikes hit, it also would have had actress/writer/comedian Ayo Edebiri, whose credits include Big Mouth, The Bear, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, in the cast. Unfortunately for Edebiri, the production delay caused her to run into scheduling issues, so she has had to drop out of the project. Deadline reports that the character she was going to be playing will now be played by Geraldine Viswanathan.

Exclusive: Geraldine Viswanathan is set to join Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts as she replaces Ayo Edebiri, who is departing the project due to scheduling after production was delayed due to the dual WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes last year.

When Focus Features moved Ethan Coen‘s Drive-Away Dolls from the fall festival slate to it’s current February 23rd release date we can imagine that Sundance and Berlinale programmers started salivating and wouldn’t it be a swell narrative if Ethan returns to Park City exactly four decades after launching his career with Grand Prize winning Blood Simple? Co-written with his wife Tricia Cooke, this stars Margaret Qualley, Geraldine Viswanathan, Beanie Feldstein with supporting players in Matt Damon, Pedro Pascal and Colman Domingo. Zola and Eileen cinematographer Ari Wegner and composer Carter Burwell brought their magic to the crime caper.

After playing exclusively in theaters for a week, specifically attached to prints for Wes Anderson’s “Asteroid City,” the first trailer for “Drive-Away Dolls” has been offered up for online consumption. Anyone checking out Focus Features’ 1950s-set sci-fi comedy in multiplexes this weekend will likely get a theatrical helping of this one too, but you can watch it above instead.
Directed by Ethan Coen, but not alongside Joel Coen, the road-trip crime romp was written by Coen and Tricia Cooke. It stars Margaret Qualley, Geraldine Viswanathan, Beanie Feldstein, Pedro Pascal, Colman Domingo, Bill Camp and (in what seems to be another in a long line of just-for-fun cameos) Matt Damon.

Things quickly go wrong when Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan look for a fresh start with an impromptu road trip to Tallahassee in the trailer for Ethan Coen — half of the acclaimed sibling partnership known simply as the Coen brothers — and Tricia Cooke’s comedy caper Drive-Away Dolls, which Focus Features released Friday.
It’s only when they hit the highway that the duo discover the trunk of their rental car has valuables of value to dangerous criminals. Now on the run, they cruise lesbian bars and encounter, among other obstacles, a mystery briefcase and an evil politician.
“I may help you break a big murder case,” Qualley, who plays Jamie, tells her cop friend, played by Beanie Feldstein, as she and her demure friend Marian (Viswanathan) in the creatively eclectic teaser trailer try to stay ahead of fumbling criminals in hot pursuit.

Ethan Coen’s first narrative feature film as a solo director looks an awful lot like some of the beloved comedic collaborations Coen made with his brother, Joel Coen, during their decades-long career together – particularly “Raising Arizona” and “Fargo.” On Friday, Focus Features released the first trailer for “Drive-Away Dolls,” the new comedy thriller Ethan Coen directed by himself and also co-wrote and produced with his wife, Tricia Cooke.
A sample of some of the comedy on display in the feature, which focuses on two young women (Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan) who run afoul of a bunch of inept criminals – including one shady figure played by Matt Damon:
Damon’s character: “Who are you?”
Viswanathan’s Marian: “Democrats.”
It’s funnier in the trailer, watch it below.

Exclusive: Ethan Coen looks to have found the leads for his untitled pic at Working Title and Focus Features. Sources tell Deadline that Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan are set to star in the film, which will marks Coen’s first time directing a film on his own after having spent his movie career co-directing and writing with his brother Joel.
As of now, plot and character details are being kept under wraps for the new pic, which Ethan Coen co-wrote with his wife Tricia Cooke. They are also producing with Robert Graf and Working Title’s Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner.
Coen had been meeting with talent for months, with the roles quickly becoming some of the more coveted parts in the biz for up-and-coming actresses. In recent weeks, a shortlist was made and chemistry readings were held; in the end, insiders say Qualley and Viswanathan’s screen tests could not be beat.
