Clint Eastwood excels at creating deep stories about the human condition. Whether an old, racist curmudgeon joins a community he once feared or an old, curmudgeon with a flair for Gaelic culture trains a woman to box, Eastwood’s films have been simple stories grounded in real-world prejudices filled with powerful performances. With Hereafter he departs from his typical fare in favor of the supernatural, and whether the film benefits or suffers from this new addition is secondary to the fact that the story isn’t as tight and focused as Eastwood’s past endeavors. This isn’t your typical Eastwood film in terms of content, however the strength Matt Damon and Cecile de France in the lead remind you just how skilled Clint is at working with talented actors.

Chicago – Every once in awhile the question arises as to which films that were reviewed poorly today will be reappraised in future years as much-better than their first reviews suggested. We always read about movies now considered classics that were underappreciated when they were released and wonder what the equivalent movies will be from today. Let me submit Clint Eastwood’s “Hereafter,” recently on DVD and Blu-ray, as a likely candidate.
Blu-Ray Rating: 4.5/5.0
Part of the problem with response to “Hereafter” is that it was a very difficult film to market. Most of the commercials tried to sell Matt Damon in a M. Night Shyamalan-esque supernatural thriller. That’s not this movie. Damon’s story is only a third of the action, another third is subtitled, and the supernatural elements are more for dramatic dissection than thrills. This is a film that would be widely praised if it was...

Of the human condition, that kaleidoscope of ethereal emotion and imagery, there are subjective concepts that can only be perceived through dream and imagination. Films generally approach such topics with a scrutinizing eye in the sense of entertainment, but with little honesty. Clint Eastwood's newest drama, Hereafter, boldly stands as one of the most forthcoming treatments on the extremely potent subject of death and what we dream of beyond that final transition.
The Set-up
Eastwood spins an intertwining tale of three individuals from separate worlds, each touched by death in unique ways, their lives forever altered as the world spins about them oblivious and intent on disbelief. It is this unique perspective, this conditional emotional awareness that sublimely defines the film.
Here's the official synopsis from WB:

It's a very mixed bag this week for horror title releases. We're not sure how Dread-worthy the supernatural drama Hereafter (directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Matt Damon, Bryce Dallas Howard and Jay Mohr) is but have included it because of its afterlife aspects.
On the list you'll also find a couple of schlocky monster movies, one a double-feature of classic Gamera entries and the other from the Syfy channel featuring Sharktopus (a sea creature that is both a shark and an octopus) with an over-acting Eric Roberts. In addition Syfy is releasing its mockbuster Battle of Los Angeles to take advantage of the current Aliens-Invading-Los-Angeles craze.

Film: ‘Hereafter’; Director: Clint Eastwood; Actors: Matt Damon, Frankie McLaren, George McLaren, Cecile De France; Rating: ***
Clint Eastwood has made a name for himself with his lilting, little gems. He has become an auteur in Hollywood with his own style and pace of filmmaking. Sadly in ‘Hereafter’, he lapses in his own technique, making it a much lesser film than what it could have been.
It traces the near-death experiences of individuals.

It was around this time last year that Peter Jackson’s bold and visually stunning vision of the afterlife, The Lovely Bones (2010), was met with - at best - lukewarm responses from both audiences and critics. Rather upsettingly, to predict such a reaction for director Clint Eastwood’s latest film, Hereafter (2011) would require superhuman levels of optimism.
Whilst my viewing of Hereafter was tainted from the get go (or more appropriately tinted, as the print being screened was awash with sickly green hues), this initial enraging annoyance was soon rendered inconsequential against the frustrations of having to endure such a devastatingly misguided piece of work, significantly lacking in the sort of depth that it so surely believed itself to posses.
Hereafter follows three strangers from three different cites, each dealing with their own individual encounters and glimpses of the afterlife. In London, a young boy (Frankie McLaren) struggles to come...

Clint Eastwood takes a slightly different turn with his latest movie. Here's our take on Hereafter, which arrives in the UK today...
On the face of it, Hereafter might seem an odd fit for Clint Eastwood. A supernatural drama directed by the man who made his name through gritted teeth and a really big gun?
Eastwood, however, has always been keen to confound expectations, alternating between films engineered to play to his strengths and those that might stretch them.
As early as 1971's The Beguiled, he was turning his image on its head, then went back to the day job with Joe Kidd in 1972, before 1973's Breezy showed his more sensitive side. A kind of 'one for me, one for them' arrangement way before Steven Soderbergh got in on the act.
But Hereafter isn't the big stretch it would appear to be. There's a big question hinted at within Peter Morgan...

Clint Eastwood's latest is an unholy embarrassment that everyone involved will do best to forget, writes Peter Bradshaw
Clint Eastwood fans may, from now on, wish to put their hands over their ears and loudly sing "lalalala" when anyone mentions this film. It is a bizarre and baffling turkey, one of the most purely puzzling features to be released this year so far. How can so much mighty talent – Eastwood directs a script by Peter Morgan, and Steven Spielberg co-produces – can have produced something so embarrassingly awful? It is set in the Us, France and Britain; three sets of people encounter the concept of the hereafter. Marie LeLay (Cécile de France) is a famous French TV presenter who has a horrendous experience on holiday; newcomers Frankie McLaren and George McLaren play two London boys, Marcus and Jason, whose lives are touched by grim fate; Matt Damon is George, an...

Stars: Matt Damon, Cecile De France, Frankie McLaren, George McLaren, Bryce Dallas Howard | Written by Peter Morgan | Directed by Clint Eastwood
Hereafter is over-sentimental, manipulative, nonsensical tripe; a film which not only manages to be punishingly boring but also insulting to your intelligence as well.
It begins with Marie (Cecile De France), a French journalist who has a near-death experience when she’s almost killed by a tsunami. Returning to her job as a successful anchor of French magazine show, she’s clearly not herself and her boyfriend / producer insists that she take time off to finish her book. Meanwhile, in London, Marcus (Frankie McLaren) loses his twin brother Jason (George McLaren) in a car accident and is taken into foster care when his junkie mother is unable to look after him.

Clint Eastwood's "Hereafter" marks a shift into uncharted territory for the director. Departing from his usual thrillers, crime dramas, and small-scale human-interest stories, this sprawling new film spans three countries in telling the tales of troubled American factory worker and psychic George Lonegan (Matt Damon); grieving London youngster Marcus (Frankie McLaren), whose twin brother is killed in a car accident; and high-profile Parisian reporter Marie LeLay (Cécile de France), who starts to question the possibility of an afterlife after she is almost killed in a tsunami. Though the three are literally worlds apart, their search to understand what happens after death brings them together. This is only the second non-French film for de France, who is from Belgium and has won a César Award, the Gallic equivalent of the Oscar. The first was the adventure comedy "Around the World in 80 Days," with Jackie Chan and Steve Coogan. In "Hereafter,...

Clint Eastwood's latest directorial effort, "Hereafter," is garnering Oscar buzz around Hollywood.
The film tells the story of a tortured psychic (Matt Damon), a French woman (Cecile De France), and a London School boy (Frankie McLaren) who are each touched by death in different ways.
Just how true to life is "Hereafter?"
Since the Dish Rag isn't quite ready to cross over to the great beyond, (and hopefully come back again) we asked four experts in the field of metaphysics who deal with the hereafter for their take on Damon's portrayal of an angst-ridden psychic and Eastwood's depiction of the afterlife.
Peter Roth, an intuitive counselor and host of Progressive Radio Network's a "Energy Stew," said that he related to Damon's portrayal.
"The film was right on. We are often thought of as freaks. I understand why the public doubts a profession where there are unfortunately many charlatans. For those who are sincerely gifted,...

Hereafter
Directed by: Clint Eastwood
Cast: Matt Damon, Cecile de France, Frankie McLaren, Bryce Dallas Howard
Running Time: 2 hrs 10 mins
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: October 22, 2010
Plot: A man who claims to talk with the dead (Damon), a recent survivor of a tsunami tragedy (de France) and a young boy (McLaren) are connected by a unique chain of events involving fleeting interactions with the paranormal.
Who’S It For? Those who are familiar with Eastwood’s directorial work might be more prepared than others for his particular pacing. Everyone should know, however, that the trailers are misleading in presenting this film as a sort of “disaster movie.”
Expectations: Eastwood has explored mortality many times before, but hasn’t ventured into afterlife contemplation much. At times he has dropped the ball when it comes to poignant sentimentality (Invictus), so I was especially curious to see with how much emotion Eastwood would present the concept of the paranormal.

Hereafter Directed by: Clint Eastwood Written by: Peter Morgan Starring: Matt Damon, Cécile de France, Frankie McLaren, George McLaren, Bryce Dallas Howard, Jay Mohr Clint Eastwood's past decade as a director has been hit or miss. Along with several Oscar winners and nominations, Eastwood has released several films that seem to hit a growing inconsistent nature. Hereafter continues this inconsistent production style while exploring many of Eastwood's themes of death and the end of life. As a victim of a tsunami, Marie Lelay (Cécile de France) is revived after drowning and experiencing a brief encounter with an afterlife. She has trouble returning to a normalcy within her life as television journalist in France. In London, pre-teen English twin boys Marcus and Jason (Frankie and George McLaren) struggle with their mother's drug-addiction. An unfortunate accident sends a depressed Marcus to live in a foster home where he constantly looks for answers with local faux-psychics.

I have a theory about Clint Eastwood's latest film, Hereafter, and why critics seem to be generally lukewarm towards it. My theory stems from the assumption — correctly held, I believe — that the subject of the afterlife paints any filmmaker wishing to treat the material seriously into a corner. Setting aside for a moment that the octogenarian director would have every reason to be fascinated by this material, it may be a well nigh impossible task.
When I first learned of this movie, my first thought was, "at last, an answer to that most fundamental of human questions [no, not why is Bieber fever sweeping the land?]—what is the point of our existence and what happens to us after we die?" Of course, then I promptly came to my senses and realized that no such answer could possibly be forthcoming, since the enigmatic nature of the undiscovered country, by definition, negates any final conclusions.
And therein lies the problem with this film,...

Clint Eastwood’s films have generally dealt with the subject of death in one way or another. Movies like Unforgiven presented an eye-for-an-eye philosophy of death as the appropriate justice for killers. Mystic River was about the effects of a murder on the people left behind. Million Dollar Baby touched on the subject of Euthanasia. Gran Torino showed us a man facing his own mortality. Now, Eastwood gives us a look at death from the other side.
Clint Eastwood’s previous films have always been grounded in a grim reality. He’s never delved into sci-fi or horror before as a director. Eastwood is a master at capturing the intense emotions people deal with during very real crisis situations. Hereafter is a major departure from the director’s earlier oeuvre. Perhaps now that he’s reached 80, he’s become more contemplative about what survives beyond death than by what precedes it.

Directed by: Clint Eastwood
Cast: Matt Damon, Cécile De France, Frankie McLaren, George McLaren, Jay Mohr, Bryce Dallas Howard
Running Time: 2 hrs 9 mins
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: November 5, 2010
Plot: It’s the story of a psychic (Damon), a woman (De France) who experiences near death, and twins (Frankie and George McLaren) who go through a life and death moment.
Who’S It For? Are you already a believer in what is beyond this life? Do psychics play a role in your beliefs? I think it will help in this otherwise slow moving drama.
Expectations: Believe. You must believe. Those thoughts are just about all I took from approximately nine seconds of the trailer that I watched. I love Matt Damon. Eastwood’s directing hasn’t done it for me lately. In fact, Invictus is one of Damon’s worst of his career. I have my guard up with Hereafter.

There are three storylines in Hereafter, Clint Eastwood's latest flick. These focus on three characters who all have some connection to death and/or the afterlife: Matt Damon's George in San Francisco, Frankie McLaren's young Marcus in London, and Cécile De France's Marie in Paris. The film jumps around between them until their stories slightly converge.
George is a humble psychic who doesn't like to give readings and tells his brother (Jay Mohr), "A life that's all about death is no life at all." He blames his "gift" for his lack of a social life. Marie is a French journalist who barely survives the Asia tsunami and becomes obsessed with the "hereafter" after that experience. Marcus is dealing with the death of a very close relative (and his story is made to coincide with the 2005 London bombings).

With expectation and anticipation Clint Eastwood's Hereafter screened for a small group of press at the Toronto International Film Festival. Midway through, expectation and anticipation disappeared and were replaced by hope. I hoped something would happen of consequence, something that would give me some idea why I was watching this film. Eastwood, working with an original script penned by Peter Morgan (The Queen), works on three separate plot lines only to bring them together through a matter of weak coincidence. His message at the end is quite unclear as this exploration of death seems to want to say something, but has no idea what.

Director: Clint Eastwood Writer: Peter Morgan Starring: Matt Damon, Cécile De France, Thierry Neuvic, Jay Mohr, Bryce Dallas Howard, Frankie McLaren, George McLaren Oh Clint, what strange land hath thou taken us to? It’s a land of bizarre ghostly figures, depressed clairvoyants, and British children who wander aimlessly under the gray skies of London. It’s a place of tsunamis juxtaposed against calm, comfortable French restaurants, with French people speaking smartly with subtitles. It’s a place of grown men eating (and cooking) alone. It’s a purposeful place, but oddly lacking purpose. It’s a land of talented actors speaking lines that leave their tongues stuck to the roof of their mouths. Oh Clint, what hast thou done! Yes, here in the Hereafter, even Matt Damon cannot slay the mighty beast. Here, Matt plays George, a lonely psychic, who is afraid to touch another for fear of channeling their dead relatives.

From action–packed days in western films to his macho days as the iconic Dirty Harry, the respectable and tireless actor-producer-director Clint Eastwood never shies away from taking on new challenges. He demonstrates this by tackling the sensitive subject of mortality and the modern world of CGI technology in his current release Hereafter. Penned by acclaimed screenwriter Peter Morgan (The Queen, Frost/Nixon), Eastwood teams up with a great cast including Matt Damon whom he worked with in Invictus, Belgian actress Cecile de France, British newcomers George & Frankie McLaren, Jay Mohr and Bryce Howard Dallas. Hereafter is based on three distinct characters from different parts of the world, haunted by their individual experiences with death. While struggling with common feelings of loneliness, confusion, loss and love, their lives eventually converge as they embark on their personal yet desperate truth seeking quests. I had the great pleasure of joining Damon, Eastwood,...

Chicago – Clint Eastwood’s “Hereafter” is a dramatic examination of a subject rarely dealt with in American cinema with even an ounce of honest emotion: What happens after we die. Without Shyamalan-esque twists or overwrought melodrama, director Eastwood, writer Peter Morgan, and their incredibly-talented cast have crafted one of the most complex dramas of the year, a piece that has already been misunderstood by the critics that have easily dismissed it but that will eventually be remembered as one of Eastwood’s best films of this period of his remarkable career.

While “Hereafter” has a global scope, it essentially tells the story of three people and does so with long, uninterrupted...

Clint Eastwood’s latest, Hereafter, attempts to tackle some of the biggest questions a human can ever lob at the universe – the meaning of death, the existence of heaven, the power of love – through three somewhat interlocking stories. George Lonegan (Matt Damon) is a former psychic who has spent too much time communing with the dead. Marie LeLay (Cecile De France) has touched death in a tragic natural disaster. Everything’s a wash following the CGI tsunami. Unfortunately, that’s how Clint Eastwood chooses to open his latest directorial effort, “Hereafter,” a ridiculous supernatural-tinged triptych that slogs toward a soggy, sentiment-laced conclusion with about as much depth as a kiddy pool.
Eastwood wastes no time establishing the three parallel stories: Marie (Cecile de France), a French journalist, believes she’s seen the afterlife after being swept away by the tsunami; Marcus (Frankie McLaren), the youngest of two Dickensian-style twins from a broken home, is obsessed with death and the answer to the age-old question of what happens when we die; and George (Matt Damon), a construction worker, has the psychic ability to communicate with the dead, a talent he views as a curse. Obviously, these plot strands will eventually intertwine in Babelesque fashion, but they do so half-heartedly, as though Eastwood became bored with the story he set out to tell midway through production.

Apple has debuted the official one-sheet for Clint Eastwood’s supernatural drama “Hereafter”. I’ve seen the trailer a couple of times now, and I wouldn’t necessarily call it a horror movie, or even all that supernatural-ish. It’s more of a drama about human beings coping with death and dying. • Toronto Report #2
Clint Eastwood's Hereafter considers the possibility of an afterlife with tenderness, beauty and a gentle tact. I was surprised how enthralling I found it. I don't believe in woo-woo, but there's no woo-woo anywhere to be seen. It doesn't even properly suppose an afterlife, but only the possibility of consciousness after apparent death. This is plausible. Many near-death survivors report the same memories, of the white light, the waiting figures and a feeling of peace.
The subject lends itself to sensationalizing and psychic baloney. Eastwood has made a film for sensitive, intelligent people who are naturally curious about what happens when the shutters close. He tells three primary stories. Their three central characters meet at the end, but please don't leap to conclusions. This is not one of those package endings where all the threads come together in a Coincidence that makes everything clear. They meet in...

My Thoughts: I know it’s sacrilege within the film community to say that you don’t like Clint Eastwood movies, but, well, there you have it. Not the ones he directs at least. They always seem over-inflated Oscar bait, which never really appeals to me. Don’t get me wrong, people have tried to make plenty of cases for him as a director and they’re entitled to their own opinions, but nothing ever seems to change. That being said, Hereafter looks like it has potential. Sure, there’s the whole thriller thing, which is already a nice departure from your average glacially-paced Eastwood movie. At first it was a little weird to see a tidal wave Deep Impact or 2012 style in an Eastwood movie, but once I got over the initial shock,...

If you ever wondered what a Clint Eastwood-directed homage to an early (and therefore not rubbish) M. Night Shyamalan film might look like then look no further than the brand-new trailer for Hereafter.

Photo: Warner Bros.

After the abominably banal Oscar-bait that was last year’s Invictus, I was ready for Clint Eastwood to attempt something new. Enter Hereafter, a supernatural drama starring Matt Damon as a psychic and a trailer featuring a tsunami of 2012-level absurdity. What follows is a fairly provoking work capped off by an ending that will not only frustrate, but make one rethink if it was all worth it.
Scripted by Peter Morgan (The Queen, Frost/Nixon) we follow three separate stories, each dealing with death and the afterlife. The first is Marie (Cécile De France), a French journalist who experiences a horrific brush with death. There is George (Matt Damon), a dock worker and once-practicing psychic. Then we have Marcus (Frankie McLaren), a London child who loses someone close and is on a journey to deal with the aftermath.

Given Clint Eastwood’s last couple of films, you might be forgiven for thinking that Hereafter is either the further adventures of Gran Torino’s Walt Kowalski as he growls at people to keep off his heavenly lawn, or a second look at Nelson Mandela. But then you remember this is Eastwood, a man who has made a point in his recent directorial career of shifting tones every time. And so the trailer for his latest reveals that it’s a meditation on life, death, and the afterlife.Three main stories intertwine here as we follow George (Matt Damon), an American who used to make his living as a psychic, Marie (Cecile De France), a French journalist who goes through a near-death experience during the 2004 Tsunami which struck Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India and Thailand, and Marcus (Frankie McLaren) a schoolboy living in London whose life is altered when his twin brother dies in an accident.

The first trailer for director Clint Eastwood's new supernatural thriller, Hereafter, has arrived online.
The movie looks like interesting new territory for the 80-year-old machine that is Eastwood, somewhat stepping into other-worldly realms.
It stars Matt Damon as a man who has psychic abilities and is able to communicate with the deceased, which once saw him as an author and celebrity in paranormal communication. But as he tries to leave that life behind him, others who have looked death in the face seek him out as they pursue answers.
