“Ask Netflix!” was Mohammed ‘Mo’ Amer’s response when asked whether or not his hit-comedy show “Mo” will return for a second season. “We won awards, we are one of Variety’s top shows…” he continued, to the great applause of an eager audience at his In Conversation event at the Red Sea Film Festival.
“Nothing happened overnight; it took a lot of patience and time to be yourself on American television,” said Amer, when speaking on the lengthy journey to be allowed to tell his story in an authentic way within American television. “They put a lot in front of you for you to do things I am not okay with. It took over 20 years of patience and figuring out what the business is, and what story I want to tell, to make ‘Mo’ happen.”

Writer and stand-up comedian Mo Amer was the latest Hollywood name to pass through Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea film festival Wednesday where he discussed his varied career as part of the festival’s ‘In Conversation’ series and the potential of a second season of his well-received Netflix comedy Mo.
Amer, who is also known for his role in the popular Hulu/A24 comedy Ramy, wrote, produced, and stars in Mo, which is inspired by his own life story. The show follows a fictional Palestinian refugee who flees Kuwait with his mother, Yusra, and brother Sameer after the start of the Gulf War. The family finally lands in Houston, Texas, where they start the years-long business of securing asylum.

“It was just him and me riffing, kind of like music,” reveals Teresa Ruiz about how improvising on set forced her out of her comfort zone on the Netflix comedy “Mo.” For our recent webchat she adds, “I gained weight, even though nobody asked me. I cut my hair really short. I dyed it. It was all this stuff that nobody asked me to do, and I just felt it would be something, or it would add something. So, it was a big leap of faith. That whole character is a leap of faith and it was uncomfortable,” she says. “I just let it go and I didn’t care where the camera was and I didn’t care to be beautiful.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

At its core, Netflix’s Mo is a show about faith. There’s the faith Mo Amer’s character and his family have in the American legal system that they hope will make them citizens after years of living as refugees, but there’s also religious faith — Mo’s Islamic beliefs, his Mexican American girlfriend’s Catholicism, and the idea (present in most creeds) that everybody from any background could live together in harmony. But it’s also a show about olive oil. There’s a lot of it in Mo. The fictionalized version of Amer is very particular about it, and the liquid gold has a Proustian effect that recalls happier times growing up in another place, before his family had to run from their home in Palestine to Kuwait, then to America after the onset of the Gulf War.

“Comedy is a great platform to discuss very serious topics while also laughing at them at the same time,” declares comedian, actor, writer and producer Mo Amer about finding the funny in any situation on his new Netflix comedy series “Mo.” For our recent webchat he adds, “I joke about anything that I feel that I am knowledgeable about and that’s important to me. I come from a place of knowledge first and then bring it out, versus just talking about it because it’s what’s in the zeitgeist. It’s not what I do, and I’m very personal with everything I do. If you see the first two specials and the series, you can tell it’s really grounded and stuff that I know and am knowledgeable about.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Boasting quite the list of names backing the project in a producing capacity––including Spike Lee, Riz Ahmed, Alma Har’el, Spike Jonze, and Crystal Moselle––the directorial debut of Dina Amer is finally arriving next month following a premiere at last year’s Venice Film Festival. You Resemble Me tells the true story of Hasna Ait Boulahcen, a woman who was falsely accused of being Europe’s first female suicide bomber. Ahead of the November 4 release, the new trailer and poster hav now arrived.
Rory O’Connor said in his review, “The worlds of contemporary geopolitics and narrative independent filmmaking collide in You Resemble Me, a movie that shape-shifts from a first act coming-of-age tale into something searing and provocative, and ripped straight from the headlines. Bold and scattered, it marks a formidable debut for Dina Amer, a first time director who emerges with no shortage of credentials: an award-winning journalist...

The first trailer for “You Resemble Me,” the feature directorial debut of “The Square” associate producer Dina Amer, has been unveiled. The film debuted at Venice in 2021 and has had a stellar festival run since, picking up plaudits on the way.
The film, executive produced by Spike Lee, Spike Jonze, Riz Ahmed and Alma Har’el, tells the true story of Hasna Ait Boulahcen, a woman who was falsely accused of being Europe’s first female suicide bomber. It follows two sisters on the outskirts of Paris and after the siblings are torn apart, the eldest, Hasna, struggles to find her identity, leading to a choice that shocks the world.
The starting point for the film was the Bataclan attacks in Paris, where Amer was a journalist reporting on the scene.
“As a Muslim Egyptian woman living in the West, I’ve struggled to reconcile pieces of my identity that feel contradictory.

Jehane Noujaim started her filmmaking journey with HBO’s The Vow in 2009. The award-winning director attended an introductory class for Nxivm’s personal growth Executive Success Program (“Esp”), where she would go on to meet the self-help marketing corporation’s leader and founder Keith Raniere and his co-founder Nancy Salzman. The pair, now convicted felons, were eventually examined in The Vow and now, interviewed for The Vow, Part Two, which premiered Oct. 17, more than a decade after that initial class.
But, back in 2009, Noujaim says she didn’t get the kind of balanced access she was looking for, so she put the project aside. She went on to make other documentaries like Startup.com (2001), focusing on the dark side of the internet boom; Control Room (2004), about the Al-Jazeera network amid the U.S.-Iraq war; and The Square (2013), looking at the unrest in...
