While it’s unlikely we’ll ever see a reunion between one of the greatest creative partnerships of the century thus far––that of director Terrence Malick and cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki––a new short has arrived that hits the sweet spot of feeling like it could’ve been borne from it. Lubezki has teamed with conservation photographers Cristina Mittermeier and Paul Nicklen for a new West Australia-shot film testing out Sony’s new digital cinema camera, the Burano, capturing the planet and our ocean.
“Our planet is in real trouble, but we still have time. We must work together to prevent the loss of amazing species, like the Southern Right Whale,” says Mittermeier, a marine biologist and National Geographic explorer. “The Southern Right Whale is an endangered species, hunted to near extinction in the 19th century. Now, barely beginning to recover, this species faces a new threat: the changing ocean.

Cinematographer Emmanuel “Chivo” Lubezki, known for winning three consecutive Oscars for Gravity, Birdman and The Revenant, got to know some special subjects for his latest project.
Lubezki teamed with conservation photographers Cristina Mittermeier and Paul Nicklen to helped Sony launch its soon-to-be-released Burano digital cinema camera, billed as a new tool with the image quality of the Sony Venice camera but with a smaller and lighter body.
To do this, the group made a short, titled The Knowing, about endangered Southern Right Whales. The short will be featured Monday during Sony’s CES press conference.
To put the new camera through its paces Lubezki and the SeaLegacy co-founders traveled to Western Australia with a crew to lens the short, which incorporated underwater cinematography and drone footage. Lubezki served as director of photography.

Paul Nicklen lives an interesting life. He’s spent the vast majority of his time on earth taking photos of it, working on it, and studying it. He’s a photographer, a filmmaker, and he is a marine biologist. He couldn’t just choose one thing he loved more than anything, so he chose them all. It’s a gift he has, and his gift is mostly focused on the earth, what it brings to the table, and how he can better it in any way imaginable. He’s well-known around the world for his beautiful photography and his work to conserve the planet, but

Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin, the duo behind 2018’s acclaimed documentary film “Free Solo,” will direct four new documentary projects for National Geographic.
Nat Geo announced on Tuesday that Vasarhelyi and Chin will direct two feature documentaries, a 10-part series, and a one-hour pilot. They will also produce all four projects via their production company, Little Monster Films.
The “Thai Cave Rescue” feature documentary is based on the against-all-odds story of the dramatic 2018 rescue of a boys’ soccer team trapped deep inside a flooded cave in Thailand and will include never-before-seen footage from the rescue. National Geographic described the “Tompkins” feature documentary as an intimate portrait of conservationist and former CEO of Patagonia, Inc., Kristine Tompkins, and the organization that she and Doug Tompkins founded together.
“National Geographic shares our deep commitment to bringing honest and inspiring stories to audiences around the world,” Vasarhelyi and Chin said in a statement.

Paul Nicklen is different from the rest of us. He likes to swim in 29-degree water beneath the Arctic ice, alone, in search of potentially predatory animals. Which can sometimes get him into trouble, like when he was nearly body-slammed by a 7,000-pound elephant seal. “The only thing, almost ever, that can kill you is panic,” he says. “It’s not that I’m willing to die. I think that I’m just not scared.”

Recently, Paul Nicklen of SeaLegacy captured footage of a starving polar bear, which was in such a bad condition that he thought that it had died before he spotted movement. The resulting footage made for difficult viewing, not just for Nicklen and his team but also to a lot of people from all around the world who saw it through his social media accounts. After all, polar bears are some of the most charismatic megafauna out there, which made the sight of the emaciated creature rooting through a rusted trash can that much more unbearable. Unfortunately, there was nothing that
