The first poster and trailer have dropped for the film New Strains, written, shot by, and starring real-life filmmaker couple Artemis Shaw and Prashanth Kamalakanthan during the Covid-19 lockdown in New York City. The film follows a young couple on their first vacation together whose relationship is tested by being stuck inside together during lockdown. It was praised as a “refreshingly lo-fi, emotionally naked, dryly humorous look at forced confinement” by Jordan Raup in his MoMI First Look 2023 preview.
Here’s the full synopsis: “Kallia and Ram have just begun their first vacation as a couple, and they’re already bickering. Though a strange new illness is on the brink of exploding into a pandemic, and despite Ram’s protestations, Kallia insists that they are going to have a fun week in New York City. Within hours of their arrival, a nation-wide lockdown is announced, ruining their plans. Over the course of their stay,...

After capturing the life of sasquatches with their latest feature, Sasquatch Sunset and Kumiko directors Nathan and David Zellner will be shifting to sci-fi for their next film, with Cate Blanchett attached to lead the project.
THR reports Blanchett will lead the sci-fi comedy Alpha Gang, playing Alpha One, “the leader of an alien gang sent on a mission to conquer Earth. She arrives disguised in human form together with her fellow extraterrestrials, posing as an armed and dangerous 1950s leather-clad biker gang. But their ruthless plan is disrupted when the gang catches the most toxic, contagious human disease of all: emotion.”
Ahead of production kicking off this fall Blanchett and “The Zellner brother’s work never fails to surprise and delight us,” said Blanchett and Coco Francini of Dirty Films. “In Alpha Gang, they have created a far-out world in order to lampoon something much closer to home: The hilarious,...

There’s last will and testaments, and then there’s Ryuichi Sakamoto | Opus, for which the musician and composer (for whom adjectives are sometimes adequate) enlisted his son, Neo Sora, to put on film one final performance: a 20-song symposium that would “wordlessly narrate his life through his music.” Ahead of its March 15 release from Janus Films, we have the first trailer.
As Jordan Raup said in our rundown of the best 2024 films we’ve already seen, “In a heartbreaking work that feels like a private personal home movie that the world is being graced with, Ryuichi Sakamoto’s son, filmmaker Neo Sora, captured one of his father’s final performances. Shot in beautifully austere black-and-white, Ryuichi Sakamoto | Opus focuses solely on the music, capturing a man contending with his physical limitations in what amounts to one of the final offerings of his astounding talent. It’s a treasure.”

Felipe Gálvez’s The Settlers has carved a strong path: the western nabbed a Mubi acquisition on the heels of its Cannes premiere, earned Un Certain Regard’s Fipresci prize, and is now Chile’s official Oscar submission for Best International Feature. Ahead of its January 12 opening at New York’s IFC Center and LA’s Laemmle Royal, there is a trailer.
All of which would mean little if the film weren’t any good. But as Jordan Raup said in his review, “Gálvez has such a grasp on visual storytelling that The Settlers could work just as well playing silent; a shot of bloodied hands being washed after battle––a plea for underserved sanctifying redemption––strikes a nerve more than any dialogue in the script. With a well-executed time jump in his last chapter, the director explores excuses of the upper class (e.g. religion as a concealing mask) in the name of colonialism.

Reel Works has revealed the full lineup for its 2023 film festival, which celebrates the work of young, emerging filmmakers.
Taking place Nov. 18-19 at New York’s Sva Theater, this year’s festival will feature 42 narrative and doc projects, with over 85 percent of films presented from Bipoc and or LGBTQ+ filmmakers.
The festival’s second annual iteration will once again consist of projects from filmmakers ages 14 to 24 in the Reel Works community. That includes original projects produced through the nonprofit’s Documentary and Narrative Lab programming, alongside the premiere of movies from the inaugural Supported Summer Lab, a workshop that supports neurodivergent teens in developing their own original films.
The event will also mark the first time the Reel Works Film Festival features the work of external creatives with screenings of selected titles.

After delivering Florence Pugh’s breakout role in Lady Macbeth, director William Oldroyd returned earlier to Sundance with an adaptation of Ottessa Moshfegh’s Eileen, which was picked up by Neon and set for a December 1 release. The first trailer has now arrived for the 1964-set story of a young secretary Eileen (Thomasin McKenzie) who becomes enchanted by Rebecca (Anne Hathaway), the glamorous new counselor at the Massachusetts prison where she works.
As Jordan Raup said in his review, “In the cold, dreary outskirts of 1960s Boston, Eileen (Thomasin McKenzie) spends her days hoping for a better (or at least more sexually active) life, splitting her time working at a juvenile prison ward and caring for her ailing drunk of a father (Shea Whigham). When the elegant, mysterious Rebecca (Anne Hathaway) glides into her work as the new psychologist on staff, Eileen’s dull world is suddenly brought to life and an unspoken attraction sparks.

After selling to Netflix for a whopping $20 million out of Sundance Film Festival, Chloe Domont’s feature debut Fair Play is finally re-emerging this fall. Headed to Toronto International Film Festival then coming to theaters on September 29 and arriving on Netflix on October 13, the first trailer has now arrived. Starring Phoebe Dynevor and Alden Ehrenreich, the battle of the sexes drama follows a young couple who both work at a hedge fund. When one of them gets a promotion, it pushes their relationship to the brink, threatening to unravel far more than their recent engagement.
Jordan Raup said in his review, “Emily (Phoebe Dynevor) and Luke (Alden Ehrenreich) are madly in love. Engendering sex at every possible opportunity, their passion is a burning one and, after a quasi-impromptu engagement, their bond has become even deeper. Heading off to work from their NYC Chinatown apartment, though, something feels off. We quickly...

At some point in the last few years of compiling The Film Stage’s Weekend Watch column, which seeks to highlight the best in New York’s repertory offerings, we quickly took notice of the Roxy Cinema, a theater based in the lower level of Tribeca’s Roxy Hotel. While the location may not be your normal theatrical venue, their programming leaps off the page: some of the most eminently pleasurable around, driven seemingly by little but the whims and desires of its cinephilic overlords. Where they fulfill their promise is in presentation: this is not a ramshackle operation asking us to sit on folding chairs before a tiny screen displays DVDs or files ripped from torrent networks, but a red-curtained, burgundy-seated single-screen venue with generous concessions and perfectly projected 35mm prints. In the shakiest time for theatrical exhibition we can remember it’s almost too good to be true.

Welcome to the return of Intermission, a spin-off podcast from The Film Stage Show. Led by yours truly, Michael Snydel, I invite a guest to discuss an arthouse, foreign, or experimental film of their choice.
For the fourteenth episode, I talked to the editor-in-chief/co-founder of The Film Stage, Jordan Raup, about Canadian auteur Atom Egoyan’s 1994 erotic melodrama Exotica (available on a new Criterion Collection disc and alongside Calendar, The Sweet Hereafter, and The Adjustor on the Criterion Channel).
At first blush, Egoyan’s film defies easy categorization with its recursive structure, multiple central characters, and the director’s own penchant for throwing viewers into previously defined relationships. Exotica’s dizzying construction only amplifies those sensations with the characters’ winding stream-of-consciousness monologues, Dp Paul Sarossy’s furtive camerawork, and Mychael Danna’s Egyptian-influenced score.

One of the finest documentaries of the year, Margaret Brown’s Descendant explores the buried history of the last known slave ship to arrive to U.S. shorts. Doubling as an intimate portrait of a community and generational trauma, the Sundance winner is now playing at New York Film Festival and will arrive on Netflix on October 21. Ahead of the release, the first trailer has now arrived.
Jordan Raup said in his review, “Over half a century after international slave trade was abolished in the United States, Timothy Meaher made a bet that he could transport a ship of captives from Africa to the Alabama coast. As owner of the ship The Clotilda, following the 1860 voyage which brought 110 people from West Africa to Mobile, Meaher covered up his crimes (which could have brought him to death) by burning and sinking the vessel. Coincidentally, it would be the second occurrence where this type of purposeful chatter would turn into concrete plans. Back at Sundance in 2019, I began discussions with Jordan Raup from The Film Stage rethinking how we could better serve our own readership base and further accomplish what we furiously and feverishly already do here at Ioncinema.com: promote cinema that matters. Today’s strategic alliance announcement is not only a culmination of our work but it displays and adheres to a philosophical approach to what is the DNA of all the partnering sites.…...

We’re now just over a week away from the release of Robert Eggers’ third feature, the Viking epic The Northman. With a cast led by Alexander Skarsgård, Nicole Kidman, Claes Bang, Anya Taylor-Joy, Ethan Hawke, Björk, and Willem Dafoe, the early word regarding the 70 million production has been quite effusive, and now a new trailer and more have arrived ahead of the April 22 release.
Jordan Raup said in his review, “Whether the dread-inducing rituals of witches or a turpentine-fueled descent into hysteria, Robert Eggers’ cinema is of unflinching immersion. Trapped in the center of symmetrical frames and surrounded by immaculate production design, the only escape for his characters’ fury seems to be bounding off the screen onto the audience themselves. The effect oscillates between entrancing and grating, wearing one down until there’s no choice but to succumb to the mania and plunge into the madness. A considerable step up in scope,...

After working at quite a steady clip the last few decades, the usually intrepid 79-year-old Werner Herzog has had a rightfully quiet pandemic. We’ve now finally learned what he’s been working on as news has arrived of his next documentary.
The Fire Within: A Requiem for Katia and Maurice Krafft, backed by Abacus Media Rights, tells the story of the French volcanologists, which were not only brought up in Herzog’s previous film Into the Inferno––his 2016 collaboration with volcanologist Clive Oppenheimer––but are also the subjects of this year’s Sundance sensation Fire of Love.
Herzog’s film, which he of course narrates, pulls from the over 200 hours of footage the duo left behind following their death in 1991 at the base of a volcanic explosion. It’ll certainly be interesting to contrast Herzog’s take on the tale after Sara Dosa’s documentary, which features voiceover narration...

Something’s coming, something good, at least if the early responses to Steven Spielberg’s remake of “West Side Story” are any indication. The highly anticipated 20th Century Studios film had its first screenings in New York and Los Angeles on Monday night and left audiences thrilled with how Spielberg and writer Tony Kushner reconceptualized, reconfigured, and restaged the 1961 musical adaptation from Robert Wise that won Best Picture.
“Spielberg has been rehearsing to make a musical for 50 years so it’s not like he was gonna mess up one of the greatest ever written,” Indiewire critic David Ehrlich wrote on Twitter.
Below the Line editor and critic Edward Douglas was even more enthusiastic. “I don’t see any possible scenario where #WestSideStory doesn’t win Best Picture (again),” he wrote. “Anyone who thinks otherwise is delusional. The Mouse House has a winner and they know it.”

Noémie Merlant’s transcendent performance as a love-struck artist infatuated with her subject in Portrait of a Lady on Fire wowed critics and audiences alike, catapulting her to international acclaim. Merlant has shown her fortitude for taking on ambitious projects and her next film is certainly no exception. An official selection at last year’s Sundance Film Festival, Dark Star Pictures has released the first trailer for the bizarre romance Jumbo, the directorial debut for Zoé Wittock set to premiere in theaters February 19th, 2021, subsequently followed by a VOD release on March 16th, 2021.
Merlant stars as Jeanne, a shy young woman still living with her bartender mother Margarette (Emmanuelle Bercot), and working the graveyard shift as a cleaner at a theme park. During her shifts, she begins spending intimate time with an alluring tilt-a-world that she names Jumbo. Finding desirable qualities in the ride she decides to pursue a relationship with the inanimate contraption.

Miranda July‘s latest film “Kajillionaire” is in theaters now and numerous critics are hailing it as the director’s best work to date. Chung is set to adapt and direct Your Name, based on the 2016 romantic anime film directed by Makoto Shinkai. Carrie Coon’s filmography ranges from Gone Girl to The Leftovers to Izzy Gets the F*ck Across Town. Jude Law’s in recent years has been as idiosyncratic as to include Vox Lux and Captain Marvel. Each evening features The Film Stage crew, including Jordan Raup, Conor O’Donnell, Dan Mecca, and Cinephile creator Cory Everett, and a rotating roster of special guests as we test our knowledge of movie trivia in this online version, adapted for our current self-isolated times. With each show lasting about an hour, we’ll square off and play a few rounds of Cinephile: A Card Game, including Filmography, Movie-Actor, and Six Degrees.
Viewers are invited to tune in and follow along with the cinema-related fun!

If the Earth was no longer inhabitable, could we survive inside a self-sustaining biodome environment launched into space? In 1991, an eight-person group of men and women embarked on a two-year experiment to actually put this theory to the test. Matt Wolf’s new documentary Spaceship Earth captures this experiment in detail and following a Sundance premiere earlier this year, it’s getting quite the release from Neon, who found recent success with Parasite and Portrait of a Lady on Fire.
On May 8, not only will the film debut digitally on Hulu, Apple TV, Amazon, Google Play, FandangoNow, Vudu, Directv, and Dish; it’ll also play theatrically in participating drive-ins, and select pop-up city-scape projections (safely accessible by quarantined city dwellers), as well as a selection of arthouse theater websites and in partnership with businesses affected by the Covid-19 outbreak, including film festivals, museums and first-time film purveyors like bookstores, restaurants and more.
