Directed by Craig Gillespie, Million Dollar Arm is a heart-warming and well-told tale that remains appealing in spite of its unsubtlety, and you certainly don’t have to be a baseball fan to enjoy it.
Based on a true story, Million Dollar Arm focuses on J.B. Bernstein (Jon Hamm), a floundering sports agent who is in desperate need of a big signing. Late night channel-flipping between a cricket match and Susan Boyle’s ‘I Dreamed a Dream’ brings inspiration (as it so often does) and soon Bernstein is journeying to India to host a talent competition that will determine which would-be cricketers have the best chance at being groomed into baseball players. Returning to America with the contest winners Rinku Singh (Life of Pi’s Suraj Sharma) and Dinesh Patel (Madhur Mittal) in tow, the two prospects soon begin training under unorthodox coach Tom House (Bill Paxton), but have...

One major criticism against Disney’s Million Dollar Arm is that it should have focused on the two Indian characters, Dinesh Patel and Rinku Singh (portrayed by Suraj Sharma and Madhur Mittal), rather than white sports agent J.B. Bernstein (Jon Hamm). After all, the real story there is that two young foreigners won a reality show and in turn experienced the American Dream by coming to the U.S. and signing to a major league baseball organization. Focusing on Bernstein has the stink of the “White Man’s Burden” trope, as if he’s a hero for discovering and then saving them from a life of poverty more than they’re heroes on their own for being talented — and, yes, lucky to a degree, but mostly for their own athletic achievement. If only there was a documentary version. As I looked into the making of Million Dollar Arm it made me even more disappointed that one...

The King of the Monsters took the box office crown on Friday. Godzilla, starring Bryan Cranston, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and a few enormous radioactive monsters, earned an estimated $38.5 million in theaters on its first day in theaters — the best opening day yet for 2014. (Captain America: The Winter Soldier opened with $36.9 million last month, while The Amazing Spider-Man 2 took in $35.2 on its first day two weeks ago.) That puts the film on track for an opening-weekend total around $97 million. Directed by Gareth Edwards (Monsters), Godzilla reportedly cost $160 million — an amount it should easily make back in the coming weeks. The last U.

The film Million Dollar Arm is a family-friendly drama that is based on the real-life story of the first Indian athletes to become involved with any major American sports franchise. The film was directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Tom McCarthy. Neither gentleman has a huge list of credits to their respective professions but what they do have is largely decent quality and have latched onto a real sports underdog story here that is produced by Disney.
The story involves a down and out sports agent, J. B. Bernstein (Jon Hamm), who gets the desperate yet brilliant idea to go to India and scout for pitching prospects. The plan is to develop the winners of a pitching contest/reality show, called Million Dollar Arm, and sign them for a Major League Baseball deal. No tigers here."Life of Pi" star Suraj Sharma stars alongside actual people in the new Disney flick "Million Dollar Arm," playing one of two real-life Indian teenagers recruited to play baseball for the Us via the title reality show. The role is an extreme departure from Sharma's debut film, which required him to act solo in front of a green screen for the majority of the feature."My biggest worry was not the baseball," Suraj tells toofab's Brian Particelli. "It was the fact that I had to act opposite human beings for an elongated period of time." "With green screen you have this ability to have a creative wonderland in front of you," he explains, adding that he eventually adjusted. "But with this cast, I just had such an awesome ensemble of people to work off of."But that wasn't the only adjustment the 21-year-old New Delhi native had to make.

Disney’s live-action sports films have a tried and true formula. Million Dollar Arm, the newest story of ordinary guys trying out for the big leagues, is in the same division as efforts like The Rookie and Invincible. Like those emotionally charged dramas, the film is as safe as it surefire entertainment. The twist here is that the two players we follow on the road from poverty to the pitching mound did not know how to play baseball, or even how to wear a glove. Their names are Rinku Singh and Dinesh Patel and they were plucked from obscurity in India to travel to the United States and finesse their throwing technique in a bid to become major league pitchers.
The biggest issue with Arm is its lack of reach; screenwriter Thomas McCarthy decides to structure the story more around the ambitious super agent, J.B. Bernstein (Mad Men’s...

Cricket is by the far the most popular sport in India. Baseball is one of the most popular sports in America. India doesn’t really play baseball and America doesn’t play cricket. But there are two elements both sports have in common – batting and bowling. Both are multi-billion dollar sports and if we were to ask you this question: could cricket bowlers from India go over and bowl in Major League Baseball? You’ll find the answer is yes!
Not only is it a yes, it actually happened to two guys from India. Both Rinku Singh and Dinesh Patel were from poor backgrounds. Singh was the son of truck driver and grew up with nine siblings in a one bedroom house. Whilst Patel’s parents were so poor, he had to be brought up by his grandma. But guess what? On his character, Rinku Singh in Million Dollar Arm:
“Like me, Singh was thrown into a situation that came purely out of luck—and he had to do it. That’s where I found my connection with him. Stuff’s just happening around you, and to you, and somehow you’re far away from it and right in the middle at the same time.”
On his baseball skills:
“I pitch nowhere near as fast as, like, a 10-year old who knows how to play.

Simply by existing, "Million Dollar Arm" serves as both mythmaking and infomercial in equal measure. Based on the true story of how Rinku Singh and Dinesh Patel became professional American baseball players, the film is more than competent in the way it builds a wish fulfillment fairy tale out of a last-ditch effort to save his business by J.B. Bernstein, a sports agent, and why wouldn't it be? Craig Gillespie directs from a screenplay by Thomas McCarthy. That's a rock-solid pedigree, and Jon Hamm plays Bernstein with his Don Draper turned up loud. It's a feel-good story that raises cultural questions that the film doesn't seem terribly interested in answering, and it feels like an easy triple in the grand Disney tradition. First, dealing with it simply as a film, it's fairly direct and there is an easy charm to it. The agency that J.B. opened is faltering,...

In his first role since his breakout performance as the title character in “Life of Pi,” Suraj Sharma has chosen to play another Indian boy on a remarkable journey -- this time in the real-life tale “Million Dollar Arm” as a cricket player who wins a reality television competition and a contract to play baseball in the United States. Of the two actual pitchers, Rinku Singh and Dinesh Patel, it is unclear which one Sharma will be playing. Alan Arkin has also signed on to embody another industry veteran type after his Oscar-nominated turn in “Argo,” this time as a retired baseball scout. The two join Jon Hamm as sports agent J.B. Bernstein who orchestrated this unlikely fairytale -- which is shaping up to have an increasingly promising cast. Behind the camera, Craig Gillespie of “Lars and the Real Girl” will helm while Tom McCarthy (“Win Win,” “The Visitor”) wrote the script.

Over the years, reality TV has become an arena where dreams can come true, if your dreams mostly involve fame whatever the costs. But for two Indian cricket players, reality TV proved the unlikely path to a career in Major League Baseball. This is the incredible true story being tackled in the soon-to-shoot drama Million Dollar Arm. Penned by celebrated writer-director Tom McCarthy (The Station Agent), Million Dollar Arm will star Jon Hamm as innovative sports agent J.B. Bernstein, who sought new pitching talent in a pool of 40,000 cricket enthusiasts through the reality television show Million Dollar Arm. Bernstein's gambit paid off when he discovered Rinku Singh and Dinesh Patel, who both went on to play for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Variety reports Alan Arkin is the latest actor to sign on to the project, which is set to shoot next month in Mumbai before the production moves to Atlanta.

Having secured Jon Hamm (Mad Men) to lead its upcoming Million Dollar Arm as sports agent J.B. Bernstein, Disney has pinned down another major player in the form of director Craig Gillespie.
Million Dollar Arm recounts the events leading up to the unprecedented signing of Rinku Singh and Dinesh Patel with Major League Baseball’s Pittsburgh Pirates. Bernstein spotted the exceptional pair while in India producing a reality show involving cricket, and in the course of auditioning 40,000 players, he noticed the similarity of pitching style to baseball’s. Talented pitchers, similar style, and the radical idea was born. He’d just have to teach them actual baseball, the English language, and American culture… let the games begin.
Million Dollar Arm seems a good fit for Gillespie, who has a knack for two of the story’s major elements: bridging the unusual perspective with the established custom (Lars and the Real Girl,...

It was probably inevitable, but our nation's ongoing economic difficulties have finally hit Hollywood. How bad is it? Well, consider this: Just eight years ago, a million dollars was able to land Hillary Swank an entire baby. Now, though, according to The Hollywood Reporter, that same million dollars will get you just a single arm.
But at least "The Million Dollar Arm" is attached to Jon Hamm.
Or, to be more precise, Jon Hamm is attached to star in "The Million Dollar Arm," a brand new sports drama from Disney.
And in the tradition of previous Disney sports hits like "The Rookie" and "Miracle," "The Million Dollar Arm" is based on an amazing true story. Back in 2008, American sports agent J. B. Bernstein "discovered a pair of teenaged Indian cricket players by creating a reality TV show aimed at finding a person who could throw a baseball the fastest."

For several years, Jon Hamm has become better known as Don Draper, one of the best men working in advertising back in the 60's on the AMC drama series "Mad Men." Of course, Hamm has also taken supporting roles in a variety of films like Bridesmaids, The Day the Earth Stood Still, The Town and even bit parts in The A-Team and Sucker Punch (though his role is better in the director's cut). Now Hamm is slated to lead a project, likely while he's on hiatus between seasons of the aforementioned Emmy winning series, as Deadline reports he will star in Million Dollar Arm, a real-life drama set in the world of sports. Hamm will play sports agent J.B. Bernstein, the man who, through a reality show he staged in India with cricket players, ended up auditioning over 40,000 hopeful baseball players before finding professional pitchers Rinku Singh and Dinesh Patel.
