On July 1, my independently produced Lgbt series “EastSiders” made its debut on Netflix. This is the first time in the series’ four-year history that it has been made available internationally, with subtitles in more than a dozen languages. It’s been a long road from YouTube to Netflix, and looking back there were several key decisions we made that helped our show compete in an increasingly crowded space.
I wish I could say that I predicted this, that it was all part of some master plan, but the truth is I had no idea a series could have as many lives as “EastSiders” has had. My goals when I created the show were simple; I wanted to write, direct and star in a project and see it through to completion, because I had been involved in so many micro budget projects that never saw the light of day. I also...

Chicago – The Red Carpet was rolled out at the Music Box Theatre in Chicago on September 17th, 2015, as the 33rd “Reeling” Film Festival – the second oldest Lgbtq celebration in cinema history – had its Opening Night. The film that kicked off the fest was “Fourth Man Out,” beginning a week long showcase of Lgbtq films.
The film is a hilarious and sensitive comedy about modern attitudes and relationships, as a small town man reveals to his friends and family that he is gay on his 24th birthday. Walking the Red Carpet were featured performers Kate Flannery (“The Office”), Parker Young (TV’s “Arrow”) and Evan Todd. Also lending support was Van Hansis (“As the World Turns”), who is featured in the festival entry, “Kiss Me, Kill Me.”

Morgan Spurlock is an admitted workaholic--he's still delivering shows for his CNN series "Inside Man"--who can't say no. And he's prepping a new Maker channel to launch in August. He admits that he sleeps about four hours a night. Still, given a window to shoot a half-hour doc short about three sets of artisans, he took it. He shot with a small crew, traveling to Georgia, San Francisco and Japan over three weeks. "I'm in a fortunate spot, as a filmmaker," he told me, "to actually take projects you want to make vs. ones you have to make. I have the ability to take 6 weeks or a month to do short films. When I have a window I jump at the chance." Tuesday night he debuted his new half-hour doc "Crafted" at the Los Angeles Film Festival, which was made available exclusively Thursday on Amazon Prime Instant Video. The...

We first fell in love with Van Hansis during his stint as the groundbreaking Luke Snyder on As The World Turns, and Luke’s relationship with dimbulb explosives expert Noah, and lovably crusty trainwreck Reid. Van garnered three Emmy nominations for the role, and he helped open the floodgates for gay characters on daytime drama.
Van moved to TV roles and a few indie films after Atwt, but came roaring back into our lives when he co-starred in the web series phenom Eastsiders, as Thom, one half of a troubled couple. Eastsiders will be back for Season Two, and the show’s creator (and Thom’s partner on the show), Kit Williamson sat down with Van to discuss the show and his career.
It’s a great interview, as Van talks about the impact that Luke had on Daytime TV, and the differences and similarities between Luke and Thom, and...

When our sister site AfterEllen.com recently presented their list of 25 TV Characters You Should Not Date, we laughed along while smugly shaking our heads and thinking, "So many undateable women!" Then we started our own list ... and our smiles turned to tears. It's not that the gay men on our list don't have their strong points, but as you'll see, the cons outweigh the pros.
Lafayette Reynolds, True Blood
Pros: Hooker, please. You can't handle what he's got to offer.
Cons: Prostitute; V dealer; Suffers from post traumatic stress-from-being-chained-to-a-wheel-in-vampire-dungeon disorder
Dateability: Lafayette is fun and fierce, but don't take V with him or you'll soon be seeing floating voodoo tchotchkes and talking with your dead Grammy about future plot points.
Teddy Montgomery, 90210
Pros: Hot as hell; Rocks a wetsuit
Cons: Can only get life insurance from Art Linkletter; Likes shaking fist at clouds; Bursitis constantly flaring
Dateability: Teddy is hot,...

Jake Silbermann
Although it’s only been three months since CBS pulled the plug on As the World Turns after an astonishing 54-year run, for many gay fans, it feels like an eternity. As any AfterElton.com reader knows, the teen supercouple formerly known as Nuke, played with uncommon depth and finesse by Jake Silbermann (Noah) and Van Hansis (Luke), made history with the first-ever dude-on-dude kiss on daytime TV, setting off a media frenzy and a veritable blizzard in the blogosphere.
Their unfolding relationship polarized fans — the gays cheered, but later, some complained the story line was sporadic and sluggish. Remember our Liplock Clock that counted how long it took between kisses? (It was 211 agonizing days between the first and second smooch.) Meanwhile, right-wingers wanted the duo to disappear altogether.
When the producers finally portrayed the guys having sex, they skipped the actual sex scene and merely showed the before and after.

In addition to what aired during the episode featuring Hansis, the actor also spoke about his career aspirations and how he doesn't limit himself to any one genre or specific roles.
We Love Soaps TV: When you started at Carnegie Mellon, what were your aspirations? Did you want to do everything - theater, film?
Van Hansis: Carnegie Mellon is a classic drama school so you're main focus is theater. You do a little bit of film and television stuff in your senior year but for the most part it's theater, it's Shakespeare, the Greeks,...

We start where we left off, with everyone dealing with the news that Jackson might be paralyzed from the neck down for the rest of his life…
Watching Emmerdale, especially during a really sad storyline like this puts me of two minds. First, I’m glad there’s a show that is consistently putting out brilliantly written and beautifully acted soapy drama and having their gay characters right in the middle of the action, without a whiff of homophobia hanging in the air. Unlike, say, As The World Turns, I know this show isn’t crippling Jackson in order to avoid their gay characters having sex.
But second, it makes me angry that we have to look at other countries to get that. And what’s really annoying is that it’s uncertain any U.S. daytime soap will ever give us another Luke Snyder or Reid Oliver or Kyle Lewis or Oliver Fish.

Allies, Apologies, And A**Holes!
Speaking of words that start with "A" this week saw a lot of angst on the site, including a couple of things I want to address. And sticking with the "A" theme, the first one is my interview with As the World Turns' co-head writer Jean Passanante. I published my interview with Passanante on Tuesday and to say the reaction was vitriolic is like saying, Shannon from Survivor: Nicaragua is a moron.
I get why people are upset over how Atwt ended and the fact that Luke Snyder was the only character left without a happy ending. And I agree that Passanante failed as a writer by not knowing about the "dead gay character cliche" that's been in existence pretty much ever since the Hollywood sign went up over L.A.
But I also think that ultimately Passanante is our ally and did a...

A remarkable gay storyline played out on U.S. television over the past several weeks. Viewers not only saw two gay men deeply in love express their devotion to one another, but they also saw both of those men behave in a heroic, even noble fashion.
Fans also watched as those who knew the two men expressed their admiration of them, extolling the virtues of their relationship and celebrating their love as not just something perfectly normal, but as something beautiful and admirable.
Quite frankly, it was unlike any other gay storyline seen on American television.
It also made many gay and straight viewers furious.
The show was As the World Turns, which ended its fifty-four year run last week. And as the show came to a close, wrapping up most storylines, the love story of one Luke Snyder (Van Hansis)and Dr. Reid Oliver (Eric Sheffer Stevens) was front...

And According To Me, The Winner Is!
Since every media outlet in existence including American Woodworker, Embalming & Burial and Prison Guard Weekly has already weighed in with their Emmy pics for this Sunday's award show, I thought I'd do something different. Like … take the week off. But the rest of the staff objected to that for some reason.
So instead , since this column is called the Best.Gay.Week.Ever!, I thought it would be fun to look back to the dawn of time and name the gay shows, characters, actors, writers I think most deserving of, well, let's call them the Gay Emmys, or following the lead of Kathy Griffin, the Gemmys!
Here are the categories for which I'll be selecting winners as if these nominees were competing against each other for an Emmy: Best Drama Series, Best Comedy Series, Best Gay Actor Comedy, Best Gay Actor Drama, Best Writing Drama,...

Man, you take a couple of days off and you get the gayest Emmy nominations ever and about a zillion other things happen that I need to catch up and comment on. How to cover it all?
Hmm, how about I just open my mind up and do it stream of consciousness style? Things might sort of leap all over the place, but it should be interesting. Ready, here we go. Prying open subconscious and...
Nooo! It's awful in here! So cold and dark and empty! Aieeee!
Oh, wait. I actually opened Mary Cheney's soul. How did that happen?
So where did the Flying Monkey (that would be Brent, my partner) and I go last week that kept me from writing the Bgwe? A couple hours north of where we live are the San Juan Islands which...

That's Hilarious! No Way! It's Offensive! Well, Actually It's Complicated
Everyone knows that two of the trickiest subjects to talk about in mixed company are religion and politics. But when it comes to what we obsess about cover on AfterElton.com, I'd actually say comedy might be one of the toughest to discuss (that and whether or not there should be a U.S. version of Torchwood).
All you have to do to see that is look at the comments on our last post about Family Guy which generated very heated discussion. That same issue came up twice this week, first with a discussion of gay male sexuality and the use of the word "faggot" on the new FX series Louie, and then again on an episode of The Boondocks that joked about prison rape.
When it comes to the use of the word "faggot" I don't like hearing it...

This Column Is 100% Angst Free. And Made From 100% Angus Beef. Mmmmm!!!!
Okay, folks are going to be arriving soon to read this week's column and I've got to get ready. So where did I leave that flipping bottle of Prozac? Can't have a repeat of last week after all.
So the Prozac's not under the True Blood extended scene of Sam's dream sequence with Bill that Alan Ball sent over. And it's not under the hate mail from Ramin Setoodeh either. (And I really need to do something about that ticking package he sent.)
So where the eff did I leave it? Because after the last Bgwe, I really can't be all grumbly or I'll have fewer readers than Setoodeh. Well, okay, no one could fewer fans than he does, but still. Come on, come on! Where is it! They are going to be here any minute it!
Found it!

Gee, Now That's Really A Shame
This week's news seemed to have an extra helping of gay guys doing dumb and/or self-serving things that, frankly, got on my nerves.
Leading off the idiot parade, it looks like Perez Hilton may have finally gone too far by tweeting out a picture of an apparently pantyless Miley Cyrus exiting a car ala what Britney Spears did some time ago. This could potentially qualify as child porn and, if convicted, Perez (Aka Mario Lavandeira) could actually do some jail time.
Gee. How terrible.
I don't want to revel in the misfortune of someone else, but I'm a firm believer in you reap what you sow and when someone fouls the pop culture waters the way Perez has, well, let's just say I'm not surprised.
I always thought Perez would come to a bad end of some kind thanks to his endless gossipmongering and hateful posts,...

In this "So You Think You Can Dance" edition of Z-Wind, we dig deeper into two of the contestants' TV backgrounds.
Before tap dancer Melinda Sullivan landed in the Top 11, she was on daytime TV over on CBS' "As the World Turns."
Sullivan, along with Nicholas Galbraith, played fraternal twins Zoe and Zac Finn who were up to a lot of mischief and therefore, a lot of fun, even if they are a bit creepy.
In this clip, the twins meet gay couple Luke Snyder and Noah Mayer (Van Hansis and Jake Silbermann) and have a proposal.
Less soapy is this next clip featuring Alexie Agdeppa who starred as Grace, one of "The Huggabub Club" members approximately 15 years ago.
We get an early look at her dance moves but also get to hear her sing.
Were Melinda and Alexie stars in the making?

True Blood'S Cast Of ... Thousands?
I'm not sure how much overlap there is between Gleekers and fans of True Blood, but I'm certainly happy that just as Kurt and Company exit stage right we have Lafayette, Sookie and the rest of the gang from Bon Temps returning this week. We need something really buzzy on TV to write about, no? Trust me, it's not going to be Rookie Blue.
So what did I think after watching the first three episodes? For starters I never imagined Maryann would return and hook up with Lafayette. Kidding! There's no sign's of Maryann excepting all the missing memories folks have about those orgies, and as for Lafayette, he is still his fierce, fabulous self.
Actually, I can't say much lest director Alan Ball send one of the werewolves to shut me up, although if that werewolf were Alcide (Joe Manganiello, pictured right), I might not complain too much.

No Gay. Lesbian Joke. No Gay. Gay Joke. No Gay. Ooh, Look An Actual Gay!
This week the major networks announced their fall line-ups and mid-season replacements, and overall the news wasn't great for gay characters. Ugly Betty had already been deep-sixed on ABC, and as expected, NBC axed Trauma with gay paramedic Tyler and Mercy with gay nurse Angel, while the CW dropped Melrose Place, not that what's his face got much screentime anyway. Also not unexpectedly, ABC isn't bringing back the hilarious Better Off Ted which had two out actors Jonathan Slavin and Portia de Rossi, and which was usually gay-friendly.
Of the pilots that weren't picked up, the two biggest disappointments were ABC passing on the Cheyenne Jackson/Christopher Sieber sitcom It Takes a Village and CBS not going for the drama The Quinn-tuplets, both of which featured significant gay content.
So what did the networks go for of gay interest?...

The winner of the 2010 AfterElton.com Hot 100 is …Ramin Setoodeh from Newsweek!
Just kidding. Truthfully, we can’t imagine anything less appealing than the attitudes expressed by this out gay journalist who recently argued, ridiculously, that gay actors can’t play straight roles.

Consider It The Condensed Version Of Bgwe!
I've been editing AfterElton.com for nearly five years now and I have to say this has been one of the wildest weeks I've had in a long time, if not ever.
What do you mean this doesn't look like my avatar picture? Try squinting a little. More. More. A little More. Oh, **#% you!
It kicked off Sunday morning when I did a post about Betty White's hosting of Saturday Night Live, and especially about the Scared Straight sketch.
Sunday night not only saw Jordan and Dan Pious winning The Amazing Race, but an episode of The Family Guy that had emails flying in and comments being posted on the site before it had even aired on the west coast. When I realized it was the "Quagmire's Dad" episode, I remembered Seth MacFarlane had mentioned it to me when I interviewed him last January.

As the World Turns' jerk slash heartthrob Dr. Reid Oliver is proving to be a durable fan favorite. He wins Gay of the Week for the second week running – this time even against his combustible scene-mate Luke Snyder.
To find out the magnitude of Reid's win, check out results below.
We'll be back with another Battle of the Network Gays on Friday.
Note: We do try to limit this weekly poll to the four gay or bisexual male TV characters or reality show contestants we feel have made the biggest splash in the past seven days. If you come across a particular character or reality show personality this week that you think deserves to be in the running, please mention them in the comments to this post and we'll try to accommodate.

They've competed as a couple before – and won in a landslide. They've competed individually – and also won in a landslide. But this week's Battle of the Network Gays pits a very popular romantic pairing against one another. Let the chips fall where they may. And who knows, maybe splitting the "LuRe" vote will give one of the other worthy candidates a shot at the crown. More on this week's nominees and a chance to vote after the break!
Gossip Girl's Eric Van der Woodsen
Why? He's got a hot new bisexual boyfriend and a long lost Dad back in town trying to establish a relationship. Eric (played by Connor Paolo) had only a few scenes in this week's episode of Gossip Girl, but we were particularly impressed with his intense exchange with dear old Dad (Played by Billy Baldwin):

With As the World Turns literally doing its last lap (the show goes off the air at the end of summer), how cool it is to have a nice gay love triangle developing!
I don’t know about you, but I just think there are not near enough gay love triangles on television and this one feels even more scintillating that Fish-Kyle-Nick on One Life to Live when that show still had gay characters.
Dr. Reid Oliver (played so well by Eric Sheffer Stevens) is a real rival for the affections of Luke Snyder (Van Hansis) whose heart for so long has belong to Noah Meyer (Jake Silbermann).

You Have No Idea How I Suffer For My, Um, Art
If there is any task I truly hate as the editor of AfterElton.com, it's having to deal with the Hot 100 every year. The sheer torture of having to check each and every one of your Hot 100 comments for the photos of hot guys you have posted is excruciating.
I can't tell you how much I dread having to— ooh, someone just a posted a new picture of Eddie Cibrian! And check out that one of Sendhil Ramamurthy! Smokin'!
Cibrian is Spanish for "sex on a stick"
Um, where was I? Anyway, I was going to share my Hot 100 pics this week, but it occurs to me that you guys are probably sick of hot guys by this point. In fact, I can sense you are hungering for something more intellectual, so today's column is devoted to a discussion of quantum mechanics.

Three-time Emmy nominee Van Hansis has been outstanding as gay teen and now gay man Luke Snyder on “As the World Turns” which will end its long run in September.
Van tells AfterElton.com that in the end, he’d like to see Luke end up with the love of his life, Noah Meyer (Jake Silbermann). But fans (including me!) are quite excited about his budding romance with sexy Dr. Reid Oliver (Eric Sheffer Stevens).
Here is a portion of what he has to say about Reid:
Ae: What is it about Reid that appeals to Luke? Is it more about that he’s not with Noah or is it just about him?
Vh: No, I think what appeals to Luke is that Reid is a challenge. I also think he really actually enjoys Reid’s snarkiness, you know, Reid’s nastiness.

This week's Battle of the Network Gays features two popular TV couples showing affection, a powerful coming out moment, and a gay comic book character. More on this week's nominees and a chance to vote after the break!
Brothers & Sisters' Kevin & Scotty
Why? Picture this: an episode of Brothers & Sisters that started with a close-up of a male nipple (Scotty's), and then proceeds to a scene depicting real affection and saucy banter between two very attractive men. Where else on broadcast network TV are you going to find that? Nowhere. Oh yeah, they found out they were preggers too. Congratulations boys! The show itself might often disappoint (I mean "Narrow Lake?" Come on!), but Scotty & Kevin rarely do.

Long before there was Oliver Fish and Kyle Lewis, Ryan Phillippe played gay teenager Billy Douglas on ABC’s One Life to Live.
The 34-year-old actor had not yet starred in such films as Cruel Intentions, Gosford Park, Igby Goes Down, Crash and Stop-Loss when he was on the soap and his character the first gay teenager on a daytime soap opera paving the way years later for Luke Snyder on As the World Turns.
In a Men’s Health cover story featuring a now very studly Ryan, the actor said of his 1992-93 soap stint: “I would worry, ‘What will the people at school think?’ And they shunned me in a lot of ways. But it ended up being an incredible experience and such a time of growth for me.”

We asked you which gay or bisexual TV characters you think are the best, and you told us – with tens of thousands of votes cast.
Now we have the results.
But first, a few interesting statistics.
We have quite a few familiar faces – characters who made our last poll of the best gay and bisexual characters two and a half years ago – and a few missing ones, namely Vince D’Angelo (from Will & Grace), George Huang (from Law & Order: Svu), and Waylon Smithers (from The Simpsons), all of whom didn’t even make the top 50 this time around.
Meanwhile, we also have many new faces – from shows that have debuted since our last poll.
Every single character except two comes from a show that ran in the 00s (although some shows, like Will & Grace, did debut in the late 90s). The exceptions? Jodie Dallas, played by Billy Crystal, on Soap...
