Like Jurassic Park would do years later, David Cronenberg’s The Fly showed that if you tamper too much with science, your experiments can destroy you. Viewers who watched the film when it first came out nearly 20 years ago may still be haunted by its visceral visuals, and soon fans can see the movie’s storyline continue, as Idw Publishing has announced a sequel comic book series, The Fly: Outbreak.
Press Release - “San Diego, CA (December 17, 2014) – The story that began in David Cronenberg’s film update of The Fly continues here with a five-issue miniseries The Fly: Outbreak written by Brandon Seifert (Hellraiser, Witch Doctor) with painted interior and cover art by menton3 (Silent Hill, Monocyte). It’s a bit of a puzzler why I find myself reviewing comics for kids on a website called Destroy The Brain. Not that I’m going to pretend that none of my readers have kids and would be interested in comics for kids. But the weird thing is that I don’t have kids or ever want to have kids. It’s nothing personal, kids. I’m just barely responsible enough to manage my own perpetual catastrophe (aka life) so there’s a snowball’s chance in Hell I’d be capable of doing so for another lifeform, much less want to. But! I do have two nieces and two nephews, the oldest of whom is just the right age to read comics! That said, I’m not actually sure the comics I’ve reviewing are up his alley honestly, as he’s more a superhero fan than anything.

Last week was moving week. It’s been a little hectic. It’s cool though, because if my plans go through the way I want them to, you’ll have more Comic Execution than you can handle in about a month. Here’s a hint: Fire & Stone.
Regardless, this week’s column is extra long to make up for last week’s absence. It’s probably not much consolation for you but hey, at least I acknowledge my failures by overcompensating?
Helraiser: Bestiary #1
Writer: Ben Meares, Mark Miller, Victor Lavalle
Artist: Conor Nolan, Colin Lorimer, Carlos Magno
Colorist: Tamra Bonvillain, Michael Garland
Publisher: Boom! Studios
Price: $4 (Digital)
This comic was kind of doomed from the start. You see, when I see the word “bestiary” my immediate association is with roleplaying games, whose massive catalogs of monsters are usually called “bestiaries” so, naturally, I was hoping against hope that Hellraiser...

Comic-Con is a wonderful place, one where exciting scoops can emerge from unexpected places. Attendees at the panel for Alexandre Aja’s upcoming Horns, a Daniel Radcliffe-led horror comedy about a young man trying to solve his girlfriend’s murder (which looks amazing by the way), were treated to plenty of information about that project, but one well-placed question led to an update about an entirely different but also promising project – Universal’s comic adaptation Locke & Key.
Joe Hill, the comic-book artist whose novel served as the inspiration for Horns, delivered the news, confirming that the long-in-development project will in fact be a trilogy and is currently taking shape at Universal Pictures. Albert Torres, the screenwriter of Henry Poole is Here, the upcoming Akira remake and an announced live-action version of Ben 10, has been tapped to adapt the L0cke & Key comic-book series, which Hill co-wrote with Gabriel Rodriguez.

Locke & Key is being planned for a movie trilogy.
Joe Hill - the co-creator of the Idw Publishing comic - revealed that Universal Pictures is developing the adaptation as a trilogy during the Horns panel at San Diego's Comic-Con International, reports Dread Central.
Henry Poole is Here, Akira remake and Ben 10 screenwriter Albert Torres was recently announced to be working on a script for the project.
Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez's award-winning series follows the adventures of three kids who move across the country with their mother following their father's murder.
They move into the old family home Keyhouse, a place that conceals various magical keys as well as a terrible evil.
A television pilot based on the series was filmed in 2011 but was not picked up by Fox.
The Locke & Key film adaptation has been held up by contractual negotiations between Universal and Fox.

Watching Joe Hill's Locke & Key go from page to screen (big or small) has been nothing short of an exercise in frustration. That being said, some good news has come out of the San Diego Comic-Con regarding the haunting property.
During the Horns panel at the Sdcc Hill revealed that Universal Pictures is currently developing Locke and Key as a trilogy.
Albert Torres has been tapped to write Locke & Key, Universal’s adaptation of the award-winning supernatural comic book series by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez. Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci, and Bobby Cohen are to produce, as is Ted Adams, the CEO and publisher of Idw Publishing, the company behind the comic.
Locke & Key tells of three siblings who, after the gruesome murder of their father, move to their ancestral home in Maine. They soon discover the house has magical keys that give the bearers a vast array of powers and abilities.

Screenwriting duo Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman have become a Hollywood dream team, penning such blockbusters as Transformers, Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen, Star Trek (2009) and Star Trek Into Darkness. But this twosome has been branching out into producing, and so have been seeking a scribe to adapt the graphic novel Locke & Key. It looks like they've finally found their guy. THR reports Albert Torres has officially been hired to adapt the award-winning comic book series Locke & Key into a thrilling screenplay for Universal. Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman are producing the project along with Bobby Cohen (Now You See Me) and Ted Adams, CEO and publisher of Idw Publishing, which released the comics. For those unfamiliar, the best-selling comics by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez centered on three siblings (Tyler, Kinsey and Bode Locke) who are forced to move to their ancestral home in Maine when their father is...

Universal is wasting no time in getting their adaptation of Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez’s Locke & Key off the ground. The studio acquired the rights to Idw Publishing’s supernatural graphic novel series last month and this week, they’ve brought on Henry Poole is Here scribe Albert Torres to pen the screenplay.
Torres’ resume is a bit lacking at the moment, though he’s reportedly been busy “tackling heavy-hitting tentpoles.” He worked on a draft of Warner Brothers’ own long-gestating graphic novel adaptation, Akira, as well as scripts for Silver Pictures’ Ben 10 and Paramount’s adaptation of the Dark Horse comic, Hyde.
The story of Locke & Key focuses on teenagers who go to live with their mother in her Massachusetts home after the murder of their father. Once there, the three kids find that the sprawling mansion, called Keyhouse, holds many secrets behind its closed doors, which...

Albert Torres ("Henry Poole is Here") has been selected to pen the latest attempt to adapt Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez's award-winning supernatural comic book series "Locke & Key" at Universal Pictures.
Set in a small Massachusetts village, the story follows a mother and her three children who move into their family estate after her husband is murdered. The vast estate has many areas only accessible by special keys, while a malevolent force within the house lures the husband's killer to the town to finish off the rest of the family.
Originally "Transformers" and "Star Trek" scribes Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman had planned to adapt the property into a single film. That collapsed, leading to a TV series adaptation. A Mark Romanek-directed pilot was produced but didn't get picked up to series.
Then in late 2012 came word that Orci and Kurtzman were planning to turn the property into a film trilogy at Universal.

Locke & Key tried to find life on the small screen, but the adaptation of the acclaimed comic book series never made it past the pilot stage. Fortunately for fans, Universal picked up the rights to the comics not too long ago and now they're getting serious about making the film as they've hired a writer to pen the script.
Locke & Key are among some of my favorite comics. They don't feature any superheroes, but it's a powerful story about dealing with loss, the supernatural, and figuring out what it means to grow up. If you haven't read it, the series from Joe Hill has wrapped up and all six graphic novels are available for purchase. I highly recommend them.
As such, I'm pretty excited to hear that Universal (thanks to THR for the scoop) have hired a writer for their big screen adaptation of the series:

Idw has announced that they will launch a Rot & Ruin comic book series this September, taking us back to the zombie-filled world of Jonathan Maberry’s Rot & Ruin novels:
“San Diego, CA (May 29, 2014) – Idw and multiple Bram Stoker award-winning author, Jonathan Maberry bring the untold stories from the zombie post-apocalyptic world of Rot & Ruin to comic books this September.
This all-new series is set in a world fifteen years after the dead have risen and vastly outnumber the survivors of the zombie-apocalypse. In the aftermath, humanity has found a way to live a marginal existence by forming fenced-in towns where everyone has a job to do in order to survive. As in the award-winning novels, the comic series will center on Benny Imura and his friends as they make their way in a world where the zombies aren’t always the greatest danger.

Our summers are now set. Yes, we have great movies and TV headed our way, but what to do in between? Search for the truth as Mulder or Scully with The X-Files Big Box Board Game! Idw today announced the game and its July release, hopefully meaning July 1 but perhaps meaning during Comic-Con, which begins July 23.
One of my favorite things about it? “The X-Files board game will focus heavily on material from the first three seasons of the television series, giving fans a chance to start from the beginning of the phenomenon.” Another favorite thing is the fact that one player gets to be The Smoking Man. Bring It.

This is great news on all sorts of levels. Today Idw has announced that it will be releasing a new miniseries based on Harlan Ellison‘s screenplay of Star Trek original series episode “City on the Edge of Forever,” with cover art by Juan Ortiz.
So let’s break this down a little. First, new Star Trek comic miniseries, excellent. That it’s based on the screenplay for the episode where Kirk, Spock, and Bones end up in the U.S. in the 1930′s, excellent. That it’s based on the original screenplay that few have ever seen, which won Hugo and Writer’s Guild of America awards and which was written by Harlan Ellison (The Twilight Zone, Tales From the Darkside, Babylon 5, The Outer Limits, etc., etc.) and it is being developed with his approval and input, even more excellent.

2013 was a good year for reading in general and horror in particular, so our current set of 365 days has some big shoes to fill. Here are a handful of titles coming out this year that I think are going to help 2014 meet those expectations.
Alien: Out of the Shadows by Tim Lebbon
January 28, 2014 - Titan Books
Tim Lebbon has a deft hand when it comes to working in established properties, having written novelizations and original books for fan favorites including 30 Days of Night, Cabin in the Woods and the Hellboy and Star Wars universes. Now he's taking on one of my favorite franchises – the Alien films. Out of the Shadows is an original novel that revisits the character of Ellen Ripley, who was of course brought to vivid life in the film series by Sigourney Weaver. It's the start of a new trilogy, the events of which lead directly...

This week saw the release of the last issue of Locke & Key. With its completion the series stands as one of the greatest works of modern horror in any medium. It begins with the brutal murder of the Locke family’s father and then moves the survivors of the attack back to their ancestral home, Keyhouse, in Lovecraft, Massachusetts. It may sound a bit hokey and contrived, but the reality is far different.
After that shaky little pitch, the comic book series becomes a spellbinding reading experience, demanding page turns as the family comes to terms with its haunted past.
The Keyhouse has magical keys that allow their users powers. These keys start revealing themselves to the Locke kids, who use the keys not only for their special powers, but in various attempts to deal with their trauma and to aid them in the struggles of adolescence and fitting in,...

We told you recently that comics publisher Idw had created a production company to develop projects based on their comics. Today they announced one of those projects, and it sounds like it could be pretty great. It’s a TV series based on actor Michael Chiklis‘s (No Ordinary Family, The Shield) comic series Pantheon, about Greek gods in the modern day:
Idw Entertainment To Develop And Produce Michael Chiklis’s Pantheon
The Story of Greek Gods Resurfacing In Present Day
San Diego, CA (November 21, 2013) – Michael Chiklis has joined forces with Idw Entertainment to develop and produce his comic series Pantheon as a new scripted live-action television series. Idw Entertainment will fund the development of the project and will be co-produced with Circle of Confusion.

Joe Hill has detailed the contractual wrangling that has delayed the Locke & Key film.
Universal Pictures has been negotiating with 20th Century Fox over the latter's pilot for an aborted television show based on the Idw Publishing comic series.
"It's been snared in an endless series of contractual negotiations," Hill told MTV. "Universal took a long, long time to come through with an acceptable contract for myself and Idw.
"Now they're dealing with a bureaucracy as labyrinthine and implacable as their own: Fox TV. Uni wants to avoid spending 25 million dollars on a movie, and then have Fox steal their thunder by releasing a three-year-old pilot.
"Fox wants to see some coin on all the money they sank into the pilot in the first place. The lawyers all have to validate their salaries.

Even though "Locke & Key's" life as a major motion picture is just now beginning, its time as a comic book is coming to a close. The Idw Publishing series by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez about a family falling prey to the darkly mysterious Keyhouse and it's supernatural inhabitants hasamassed a legion of devoted followers—followers that Universal hopes will follow the film to the big screen. "Locke & Key" is still in development over at Universal, but producer Alex Kurtzman teased that the project has a new writer on board.
Now MTV Geek has painstakingly documented the comic book's final days, as one chapter of its existence ends. In their two-part video series, MTV Geek interviews the creative team and editor Chris Ryall about the comic in part one, and then travels to Miami to watch as Hill and Rodriguez work together in person for the first time in part two.

There are few movies I.m looking to with the same amount of fervor that I have for the upcoming Universal feature adaptation of Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez.s Locke & Key. It.s almost as palpable as the pages the comic is printed on. And so it.s no surprise that I, like many others, am worried that this feature may fall on the same chopping block as the proposed TV series from super producers (and so-so screenwriters) Robert Orci and Alex Kurtzman, who have stayed on as producers for the film version. Collider recently caught up with Kurtzman to get an update on the film, and not only was there a solid confirmation that no one is messing with any comic fans. dreams, but he appears to be just as excited about the project as anyone else. Asked how serious he is about the feature, Kurtzman responded bluntly,...

Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez's celebrated comic book releases its penultimate issue, "Locke & Key: Alpha" #1, this week. But even as the comic draws to a close, the story is set for new life in the form of a film from Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, the writers behind "Star Trek Into Darkness" and next summer's "Amazing Spider-Man 2."
Kurtzman spoke with Collider about the progress of the "Locke & Key" movie set up at Universal, saying that the project is being taken very seriously.
"We're really, really serious," he said. "In fact, we have locked down on a writer who really came up with a brilliant way to take the best of the first couple graphic novels and play out a complete first movie story with a lot of promise of future movies,...

Idw Procures the Rights to Hunter S. Thompson’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
The original novel featured illustrations by Ralph Steadman so making it a graphic novel actually makes sense. This could be a chance to look at this classic of gonzo journalism and redeem its reputation after the 1996 film starring Johnny Depp got mixed reviews. No artist, writer, or release date has been announced, but Idw could announce more details at New York Comic Con. This book would be perfect for Warren Ellis, who basically wrote a future version of Hunter S. Thompson in his masterpiece Transmetropolitan. No matter who writes or draws it, this will be a comic, like the Fight Club sequel, that will appeal to non-comics fan and continue Idw’s tradition of having excellent literary adaptations, like Darwyn Cooke’s Eisner winning Richard Stark’s Parker comics.

When you can’t have a television show the next best thing is surely a movie, right? We were privileged to witness what most of us though would have been an excellent TV show when Fox previewed Locke & Key at Comic Con in 2011 and we were a little devastated when Fox passed on the show. If you haven't heard of the multi award-winning comic series Locke & Key, you've really been missing out. This is an amazing property, and hopefully will soon make for a mind-blowing movie. Come on in to get the details!
Universal has optioned Locke & Key to develop as a feature film, and I have to say, I am incredibly excited. If you've never heard of it, Locke & Key is a comic book series by Joe Hill & Gabriel Rodriguez that has won multiple Eisner Awards and managed to hit the #1 spot on the New York Times Bestseller list. Hill, who is the son of Stephen King, won an Eisner for best writer, and the series has won the British Fantasy Award for best comic/graphic novel twice. I personally am a constant reader, and I have yet to be anything but impressed by the series. It's dark, intriguing, but more importantly both heartfelt and intellectually engaging.

After several attempts to translate Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez’s Locke And Key to some screen, any screen, Universal has stepped up to take the latest stab at it, this time as a feature film. As fans of the series, or news stories about things that don’t pan out, will recall, Locke & Key has long been in some form of development, first as a feature film under Dimension, followed by a rejected Fox pilot that was shepherded by genre project hoarders Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, then finally Kurtzman and Orci’s proposed movie trilogy, because why not ...

Joe Hill's comic book series Locke & Key has officially been picked up by Universal Pictures, and they plan to develop it into a feature film. News broke on this about seven months ago, but it looks like everything has fallen into place. Star Trek and Transformers writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci will produce it. We previously reported that they would turn the series into a trilogy, but that isn't mentioned in this recent report.
Fox previously had plans to turn it into a TV series, and a pilot was developed, but they decided not to order a full season. The network wanted to focus on their American Horror Story series instead. Kurtzman an Orci also were producers on the TV series, so they're following the project wherever it goes.

It seems that Locke & Key, the best-selling horror comic by award-winning author Joe Hill and artist Gabriel Rodriguez, is finally on track to become a feature film. According to a story in the Hollywood Reporter, Universal has officially optioned the film rights; Star Trek & Fringe writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are attached as co-producers, along with Ted Adams of Idw Publishing and Bobby Cohen. We've followed the turbulent path of Locke & Key as it came temptingly close to a television series – a pilot episode was completed and actually screened at Comic-Con in 2011, but it was still rejected by Fox. Now it looks like it might actually happen. Hill (son of Stephen King) has gained a higher profile since then – he's won several literary awards and his novel Horns is being adapted into a feature with Alexandre Aja directing (read our interview with Aja here). More news to come as this develops.

Universal has optioned the acclaimed comic book property from Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez, Locke & Key. The film will be produced by Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Bobby Cohen through K/O Paper Products. This is the same group that have worked on Transformers, Fringe, Lost, Star Trek, and more. Ted Adams, the CEO of Idw Publishing, will also produce.
Joe Hill and Rodriguez’s gorgeous creation has garnered an Eisner win for Hill, the son of Stephen King. I’ve been furiously reading the trade paperbacks, and I’ve found the series to be wonderful, magical and perfect for film (it’s like Harry Potter with Lovecraft and Stephen King mixed). I hope everyone gets this right. It’s been bouncing around Hollywood for awhile now, with Dimension Films having the rights previously, losing them, and then K/O Paper Products jumping in and making a pilot that wasn’t picked up.
