With the imminent arrival of Batman Vs. Superman: Dawn Of Justice, a lot of the old arguments generated from the previous film are being taken out and argued. Most prominently on one side of the argument is Mark Hughes filing at Forbes, he other is most eloquently represented by Mark Waid, who has the advantage of, y’know, actually having written the character numerous times. (for starters) and Kevin Powers.

Last year was a busy one for Benedict Cumberbatch with roles in The Fifth Estate, August: Osage County, 12 Years a Slave, Star Trek Into Darkness and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. But the "Sherlock" star is slowing down a little bit with fewer projects in his immediate future like The Imitation Game and a voice in The Penguins of Madagascar. Now one more project has been added to his future slate as ScreenDaily has learned that he will star in an adaptation of The Yellow Birds, the novel by Iraq War veteran Kevin Powers. However, when you hear the story, it doesn't sound like Cumberbatch is in the lead. The book follows 21-year old Private Bartle and 18-year-old Private Murphy who cling to life as their platoon launches a bloody battle for the city. Bound together since basic training when Bartle makes a promise to bring Murphy safely home...

Some great films have been made about the horrific Iraq War, from The Hurt Locker to Stop-Loss, though not every movie to explore the human face of the conflict has met with success. Green Zone and Body of Lies stand as the two most prominent examples of films which failed to add anything to the national discussion of American foreign policy in the war-torn nation. It’s too early to tell whether The Yellow Birds, an adaptation of the 2012 National Book Award finalist by Kevin Powers, will fall into the former category or the latter. However, early signs are highly promising.
This week, Benedict Cumberbatch, Will Poulter and Tye Sheridan signed on to star in the film. Poulter is set to play a 21-year-old who meets a young recruit (Sheridan) in boot camp and, at the prompting of the boy’s mother, agrees to watch his back when they are deployed to Iraq.

Of the many, many projects "Ain't Them Bodies Saints" director David Lowery has been linked to in the past year or so — "The Old Man And The Gun," with Robert Redford slated to star and produce; writing and directing former David Fincher project "Torso"; producing Alex Ross Perry's upcoming "Listen Up Philip"; writing and directing the sci-fi "Two" with Casey Affleck set to star; writing and directing Disney's "Pete's Dragon" — one you may have forgotten about is "The Yellow Birds." Lowery got attached to the gig last fall during Tiff, and not much has been heard since, but now it has some fresh movement. Benedict Cumberbatch, Tye Sheridan, and Will Poulter are now attached to star in the movie, which is still putting together financing. Based on the National Book Award Finalist novel by Kevin Powers, the story follows two soldiers, a man and teenager, who head to fight in the Iraq war.

David Lowery has entered talks to direct Disney's Pete's Dragon remake.
The Ain't Them Bodies Saints director was hired last year as a co-writer on the film.
The remake of the 1977 animation-live action hybrid is not expected to be a musical, reports The Wrap.
It is unclear whether Lowery will tackle the project before or after his adaptation of Kevin Powers novel The Yellow Birds.
The director previously worked with a young cast on 2009's St Nick, which centred around a group of runaway children surviving in the wild.
Rooney Mara and Casey Affleck starred in Lowery's award-winning 2013 indie drama Ain't Them Bodies Saints.

The director of Ain't Them Bodies Saints is being lined up to helm the new take on Pete's Dragon for Disney...
Add another one to the pile of remakes making their way through the Hollywood system. Disney has been rumoured to be considering a new take on the live action/animation hybrid Pete's Dragon for a while now. The 1977 original, whilst fun, isn't generally regarded as a flat out Disney classic. But dragons are big business again now, and as such, it looks as if Pete's Dragon is being dusted down.
What's more, The Wrap is now reporting that an unusual choice of director is being lined up. David Lowery's most recent film was the crime thriller Ain't Them Bodies Saints, and he's also linked with The Yellow Birds, an adaptation of Kevin Powers' book about an army machine gunner in Iraq.

"Ain't Them Bodies Saints" director David Lowery is in negotiations to helm the remake of the classic 1977 family film "Pete's Dragon" for Disney Pictures.
Lowery and Toby Halbrooks were hired a while back to write the script, but he wasn't planning on directing at the time.
The original follows an orphan fleeing his abusive adoptive parents and finding a friend in the form of an animated dragon.
The new film reinvents the core of the original and won't feature musical numbers this time around.
Lowery is also committed to an adaptation of Kevin Powers' acclaimed novel "The Yellow Birds" which is now expected to go into production after this.

Over a year ago, we learned that Ain't Them Bodies Saints director David Lowery was heading into drastically different territory by scripting a remake of the live-action and animated hybrid Pete's Dragon for Disney along with his writing partner Toby Halbrooks. Now The Wrap reports Lowery has also entered talks to direct the film as well. The original film followed an orphan boy who ventures into the fishing village of Passamaquoddy with his invisible dragon Elliott. Though several accidents get blamed on Pete by those who don't believe in this dragon, when Elliott makes a daring rescue, everyone begins to believe. Read on! Lowery's script is a reimagining of the film that won't have any musical elements like the original film that featured Mickey Rooney, Shelley Winters, Red Buttons and Sean Marshall. But as of now, it's not clear if this will be Lowery's next project since he's also working...

The transition for many teens from acting out in their adolescent ways to maturing into a responsible adult is the emotional motivation and conflict in the new drama, What Richard Did.
