I hope they serve biscuits and dog food at the Cannes Film Festival because Messi, the Border Collie from Justin Triet’s Academy Award-winning drama Anatomy of a Fall, is making his way to the annual celebration of film in France. D18 Paris says Messi is getting his own short program at Cannes, though it’s separate from the festival lineup. According to its description, the experience allows audiences to observe the fest “through the eyes and the voice of Messi.”
“This will be an opportunity for Messi to ask his guest any questions with the innocence of a dog,” says D18 Paris. “When you’re the current international star, you can do anything… and Messi dares to do it all!”
Referred to as the George Clooney of dogs, Messi is Hollywood’s good boy with better manners than most actors. Still, what is the Messi TV show? Messi: The...

Cannes is going to the dogs.
Messi, the breakout dog star of “Anatomy of a Fall,” is getting his own short program that will during the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, producer D18 Paris announced. It will be set at the festival, but not part of the festival lineup. But hey, we say give him the the Palme d’Or too — though he’d probably settle for a Milk-Bone.
The program will allow viewers to experience the Cannes Film Festival from dawn until late night “through the eyes and the voice of Messi,” D18, which referred to the pooch as “the canine George Clooney,” said in a press release. In our book, that’s high praise for George Clooney.

Messi the Dog, the Anatomy of a Fall star and awards season darling, did, in fact, make an appearance at the 2024 Oscars on Sunday.
A source had previously told The Hollywood Reporter that Messi would not be appearing at the Academy Awards after his Los Angeles press tour that saw him attend the Oscars nominees luncheon and partake in a press junket.
The dog’s surprise appearance during the 2024 Oscars took place within the first few minutes of the telecast, as returning host Jimmy Kimmel kicked off his opening monologue by praising the “great” films that were made in 2023, despite the dual actors and writers strikes that shut down Hollywood.
While poking fun at the best picture nominees including Barbie, Oppenheimer, Maestro and more, Kimmel stopped at Robert Downey Jr. and joked about how he played a villain in The Shaggy Dog, which starred Tim Allen. He noted if they were to remake the film,...

The beloved canine actor Messi from the Oscar-nominated film Anatomy Of A Fall is reportedly not attending the ceremony. The border collie was a fan favorite and had even racked up some love at the Oscars luncheon with actors such as Bradley Cooper and Ryan Gosling. Fans of the canine stare were reportedly disappointed with the news.
While no official comment was given by the Academy, an insider revealed that many production companies were not happy with the way the dog from the film received attention from potential voters. The Oscars are one of the most anticipated events of the year as they end the awards season. Many of the past year’s nominees have the finale to end their run on a high as they campaign across award shows to win the coveted trophies.

The French legal drama thriller, Anatomy of a Fall, is nominated for five major Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director awards. However, the film will be missing one of its popular stars at the Awards ceremony on Sunday. Messi, the French border collie, played Snoop in the film and became America’s favorite after attending the annual Oscar Nominees Luncheon. This appearance also sparked controversy, which some fans feel speaks a lot about the Academy.

According to reports, some companies, with films nominated for Best Picture and other major awards, complained that the dog’s appearance gave an unfair advantage to the film. Messi first drew attention when he won the Palm Dog award at the Cannes Film Festival.

The countdown to the Academy Awards is winding down, and while many are debating about who got snubbed and why, one of the stars of this year’s Best Picture nominees is capturing the hearts of everyone. Messi, the border collie who stole scenes in the film Anatomy of a Fall, would continue to steal the spotlight — this time, from Hollywood A-listers — at the annual Academy Awards nominee luncheon. The dog’s trainer/owner, Laura Martin, would glow about Messi’s experience at the event, “The big moment was with Billie Eilish, who bonded with Messi for almost 10 minutes. They were hugging and petting and they really had a vibe. Then Bradley Cooper bumped into him in the hallway. The dog went right to him, so they also had a connection.”
Not to mention, the pooch also rubbed elbows with Ryan Gosling in a viral video where the Barbie star was quite taken by Messi.

A lot is riding on U.S. District Judge Richard Leon’s decision to either approve or deny At&T’s $85.4 billion acquisition of Time Warner — a ruling expected to be made on Tuesday.
On the line is the future of one of the country’s largest media and entertainment companies, Time Warner, and that of the biggest telecom company, At&T. But it’s more than just these two multibillion-dollar companies hanging in the balance — Leon’s decision could also alter the course of Disney and Fox’s looming $52 billion merger as well as other efforts to consolidate media giants.
Cfra analyst Tuna Amobi said this has the potential to be a landmark ruling.

“This merger really speaks to the importance of scale,” Amobi told TheWrap. “Scale has become such a major cornerstone in the media and tech industries.

In 1977, the Syracuse Post Standard blazed the headline “Comic Book Confab Listed” to announce the second Ithaca Comic Convention. Actually, I think it would be more appropriate to say they whispered the headline. It was scrunched in the middle of a crowded page. The article listed professional comic guests such as Walter Simonson and Al Milgrom. I’m not one-hundred percent sure if that’s how my family found out about that second Ithaca Comic Con way back then. It may have been from seeing a flyer on the bulletin board at Fay’s Drug Store. That used to be a legitimate marketing venue too. But the big takeaway is that back then, the concept of a comic-con certainly wasn’t understood.
“People meet to buy and sell old funny books?” The very notion sounded absurd.
Today’s comic conventions and “cons” are part of the nation’s everyday lexicon.

When longtime comic book collectors fondly reminisce the 1990’s, something that may very well come up is that of WildStorm. Serving as a testament to the prolific career of the legendary Jim Lee, the imprint was actually started while he was still working at Image – a company he co-founded, mind you – before becoming a part of DC in 1999.
In short order, the label enthralled readers with original properties such as WildCATs, Stormwatch and The Authority. Or, if that didn’t do it for you, perhaps you dug their A Nightmare on Elm Street or Resident Evil tie-ins, the latter of which was especially meaningful to me because it was one of the survival horror franchise’s first ventures outside of the video game medium.

Wonder Woman has now begun her journey to discover the “truth” about her past. This has taken her to Bwanda where she is actually seeking help from one of her rouges to help her with a very interesting problem. She cannot remember the location of Themyscira. Coincidentally, Steve Trevor is on a mission in the same area trying to take down a man called Cadulo and his fighters. We just know that Steve is trying to stop Cadulo from reaching a specific target and that there may be more to him than meets the eye. This is evident when a villager tells Steve that “Cadulo turns even the earth against the righteous”. I think there is more to that statement than the book leads us to believe. It will be interesting to see how Wonder Woman’s journey as well as Steve’s mission connects as the story moves forward.

When I went to my local comic book shop on Wednesday morning, I did, as always, chat up my buddy on the other side of the counter. “Did you read Black Panther yet?” I asked him. “Is it any good?”
“Not yet,” he said.
“My editor wants me to write a review, and I’ve never read any other Black Panther comics,” I said.
“Don’t worry,” he said. “No one else has, either.”
Okay, I doubt that’s true. There have been comics with the Black Panther in them for five decades now. The character wouldn’t be used if he didn’t have a fan-base. That’s capitalism.
Speaking of, this new run of Black Panther has been getting tons of publicity. Marvel has done a terrific job, getting write-ups in The New York Times, The Washington Post, Wired, among others. That’s because the writer is Ta Nehisi Coates,...

Writing a Boba Fett fight scene must be tricky, due to the disconnect between his portrayal in the films and everywhere else. On screen, there’s not much to Boba Fett. In Empire Strikes Back, the audience is told he’s dangerous but he doesn’t really do much but look cool, and then in Return of the Jedi, he has brief fight with Luke before a jet pack malfunction sends him to his seeming death inside the Sarlaac Pit (An “over-reliance on technology” message George Lucas would repeat with Boba’s dad in Attack of the Clones). From the films alone, Boba Fett is a cool looking character with a great reputation who, at best, doesn’t do much and, at worse, is kind of a chump.

Boba Fett is, essentially, the Star Wars’ universe version of Wolverine, two tremendously popular characters who built their following on the basis of a cool image, a mysterious past, and a tough guy mindset, whose popularity grew to the point that they came to dominate their respective franchises while everything that made them intriguing in the first place suffered for their ubiquity. That said, good stories can still be told featuring both characters, and with this issue, Jason Aaron and John Cassaday set out to prove it with Boba Fett.
While Han reluctantly joins Leia on a scouting mission for a new Rebel base, Luke returns to Tatooine, hoping to find some guidance for furthering his Jedi training from Obi-Wan Kenobi’s home. Unbeknownst to Luke, Boba Fett is also on Tatooine,...

A-Force #1 might not be the subtlest of comics, but it’s a big damn celebration of the great female superheroes that populate Marvel’s library of characters. The story is set in Arcadia, one of the lands of Battleworld, which was established in Secret Wars #2. It is ostensibly a matriarchal utopia ruled by Baroness She-Hulk, but, in fact, it is still under the control of God Emperor Doom, which instigates the conflict of the series.
Beginning with some hoity toity sounding voice-over narration, writers Marguerite Bennett and G. A bid from Charter, a smaller rival partially controlled by John Malone's Liberty Media, almost is inevitable. Investors are so sure of it that when the Comcast merger fell apart April 24, shares of TWC actually rose 4 percent to $155.26, about $4 less than Comcast was going to pay. But analyst Laura Martin of Needham is predicting that Charter's offer will be for no more than $135 a share. And

Astonishing X-Men #1-6 (2004)
Written by Joss Whedon

Published by Marvel Comics
Astonishing X-Men “Gifted” is one of those storylines that will make long term X-Men fans purr with delight beginning the Claremont era flashbacks in issue one. (Cassaday mimics Byrne’s art quite well.) It also can turn fans (like me five years ago) of the films and cartoons into mutie and comics junkies. Whedon pays homage to older X-Men stories without getting mired in continuity and quickly places his own stamp on the franchise by creating a new alien foe for them (Ord of the Breakworld), exploring the mutant as outsider metaphor with the cure of the X-gene, giving Shield a new branch (Sword), and also bringing a beloved character back from the dead (Colossus) in a touching, visceral way that serves the long term storyline. However, the best part of...

Following the series’ initial, action-packed story arc, Jason Aaron and John Cassaday settle in for a relatively quiet fourth issue. This is a breath-taking issue, a chance for the creators to focus on characterization and set some plots in motion. To wit, there’s Luke Skywalker, dealing with the reality of his (non)status as a Jedi following his confrontation with Darth Vader in the first arc. Also, Princess Leia pushes the Rebel Alliance to strike ever harder back at the Empire with the unstated implication being that she’s trying to keep busy so as to avoid dealing with all the changes in her life wrought by the events of A New Hope. Meanwhile, Darth Vader is on Tatooine brokering a deal with Jabba the Hutt and a mysterious...

After jumping through hoops to satisfy the FCC, the Department of Justice and skeptical lawmakers – though apparently too few hoops – it appears the mega-merger of Comcast and Time Warner Cable has been sidelined, perhaps permanently. The obvious question that analysts are trying to answer: What now? “This rocks the world of television,” says Laura Martin of Needham & Co. “We’ll be talking about this for six months. What will Comcast do next? What happens to TWC? How does this affect Disney, Fox, CBS and Viacom? What’s Charter’s move?” That last question refers to Charter Communications, the

An action-orientated finale finds the Rebels fleeing from the surging fury of Darth Vader aboard their purloined At-at walker, desperate to reach the Millennium Falcon, as Luke does his best to ensure their mission wasn’t for naught. As a single issue, it’s all a bit rushed (particularly in the subplot with Threepio losing control of the Falcon to a group of scavengers, which added a nice bit of tension to last issue but doesn’t really payoff much here), but it’s to the larger story’s benefit that it only runs three issues. Overall, there’s not much plot here (Rebel mission goes south in part 1, they try to escape in...

Star Wars #2
Written by Jason Aaron

For obvious reasons, both the original Marvel series and Dark Horse’s various Star Wars titles generally tended to shy away from direct confrontations between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader. Such encounters were the province of the films, and even after the cinematic saga had (seemingly) ended, there was, presumably, a desire to not water down their existing interactions too much by writing in a ton of off-screen battles. Both characters were staples of the Expanded Universe, but rarely interacted with one another directly.
Thus it was somewhat surprising that Jason Aaron and John Cassaday ended their mostly well-received first issue of Marvel’s new Star Wars series with Luke and Vader face-to-face, lightsabers drawn, a strong finish to a strong debut. With their second issue, the pair manage to effectively pay...

The biggest new release of 2015 (so far) is Marvel’s first endeavor into Star Wars comics for the first time since the 1980s. There are loads of variant covers, quite a few release parties, and rumored sales numbers around 1 million. Star Wars #1 is set after the destruction of the Death Star and features all the big name characters from the original trilogy. It also marks award winning artist John Cassaday’s return to interiors for the first time since his short run on Uncanny Avengers in 2012. Here is what several Sound on Sight writers (who happen to be in the same room Marvel Bullpen style) thought about this issue.

Marvel Comics has added a host of classic Star Wars comics to comiXology.
The titles, which were published by Dark Horse Comics in the years that it controlled the Star Wars licence, have made their way to the digital comics app for the first time.
The releases include Legacy, the fan favourite Dark Empire, Brian Wood's recent Star Wars series and The Star Wars, which adapted the much-altered original draft of George Lucas's script.
Dark Horse does not make its titles available on Amazon-owned platform comiXology, preferring its own apps.
Marvel will return to publishing original Star Wars comics with Jason Aaron, John Cassaday, and Laura Martin's Star Wars series.
Star Wars #1 - which has received orders of over 1 million - will be released on January 14.

There was a “Fireside Chat” with Triple H and Stephanie McMahon, along with WWE CFO George Barrios, hosted by Laura Martin at the Needham Interconnect Conference for investors in New York City. It was done as a way for WWE to talk about their business with potential investors. The chat was available for users that logged in on Tuesday although there really weren’t a lot of interesting things discussed. For those of us that are wrestling fans, it was likely a case of WWE going over the same stuff they always say about the WWE Network being $9.99 per month, all PPVs are available and so on.
When Triple H received a question about the Ufc as competition, that’s when he went on a bit of a rant talking about how they really aren’t competing with them. While he makes some good points, he is off base on a few things.

Ragnarok #1
Written and drawn by Walter Simonson
Colored by Laura Martin
Published by Idw
Ragnarok #1 opens in a suitably operatic manner as Thor and the last remaining Asgardians hold their ground against the Midgard Serpent and the world-devouring wolf Fenrir. Writer/artist Walter Simonson quotes directly from the Icelandic epic Elder Edda and shows that he can still draw gods, trolls, and elves 28 years after his run on Thor wrapped up. Simonson’s artwork is incredibly detailed with each piece of armor, weapon, or seemingly mundane things like a tavern’s interior and denizen sharply depicted by his pencils and inks. His storytelling is a little on the methodical side, and there is a lot of zooming onto characters doing something, or showing them ride into the horizon for several panels while dialogue still flies. This isn’t a bad thing, but unfortunately, Simonson’s plot and characters are underdeveloped.

Serenity Leaves on the Wind #6
Written by Zack Whedon
Pencilled by Georges Jeanty
Inked by Karl Story
Colors by Laura Martin
Published by Dark Horse Comics
For lack of a better term, Serenity #6 is a comfort food for a Firefly fan. It is full of snarky dialogue, a pack of underdogs saving the day once again, aerial maneuvers, gun battles, and most of all, the crew of Serenity coming together as a family. Zack Whedon continues to have a deft handle on all the main cast members’ voices while also developing the newcomers Bea, the leader of the New Resistance and Iris, who was trained by the Alliance to be an assassin like River. For the most part, Whedon doesn’t put many plot twists in this comic, but opts to cement old relationships between characters. Penciller Georges Jeanty does little things like insert a panel of Mal and Zoe...

Once again, WWE has captivated a group of people. The behemoth pro-wrestling company knows how to control the situation and keep everyone in the palm of their hand. Anxiously, outsiders try to guess their next move. The key difference is that this time the spell-bound observers aren’t members of the WWE Universe watching Raw and Smackdown – they’re investors impatiently awaiting news of WWE’s big television deal.
For weeks, the spigot of information has remained completely dry. Wrestlemania 30, the annual shareholders meeting and the first quarter conference call came and went without a progress update from WWE on the status of their domestic television rights deal. “Just wait.”
Here’s the situation: WWE aligned their major television properties – Raw and Smackdown – to expire in September 2014. In the United States, currently both shows air on networks owned by NBC Universal (USA and SyFy – along with replays on...

WWE announced their first quarter revenue and earnings this morning. Revenue was up $4.1M year-over-year to $125.6M for the quarter while Oibda was negative $7.2, a drop of $19.8M year-over-year. With the launch of the WWE Network and Wrestlemania sitting in Q2, most were expecting a negative quarter and in that regard WWE delivered a better-than-expected report.
While the conference call did contain numerous tidbits about the WWE Network, the major questions about the revenue juggernaut of domestic TV rights remained unanswered. WWE simply said that they were still negotiating and that they would not answer any questions related to the deal. Instead, Vince McMahon promised that “in several weeks you’ll know what we’re doing with TV arrangements”. This wasn’t a surprise since shareholders who attended last week’s annual meeting in Stamford had been given the impression that WWE wasn’t going to talk about the TV deal this week,...

Serenity Leaves on the Wind #4
Written by Zack Whedon
Pencilled by Georges Jeanty
Inked by Karl Story
Colors by Laura Martin
Published by Dark Horse Comics
Serenity: Leaves on the Wind #4 is a better paced comic than the previous issue in the miniseries. Writer Zack Whedon manages to include the planning and execution of Mal and the Operative’s plan to rescue River’s fellow Academy members into twenty-four pages of story while also filling the comic with the character interactions that made Firefly such an endearing television show. The Operative’s involvement in Mal’s rescue plan isn’t met with silence. Each crew member of Serenity gets a little conversation about him, and artist Georges Jeanty does a good job showing the various characters’ reactions and feelings about his arrival. His art is detailed in Serenity #4 with little touches that evoke the show Firefly or foreshadow ominous things for our big damn heroes.

Sometimes Serenity: Leaves on the Wind #3 is very good. Artist Georges Jeanty has an impressive handle on the interior of Serenity, which is detailed and has all the nooks and crannies of the ship in the show. He, inker Karl Story, and colorist Laura Martin also illustrate a mindblowing opening sequence that takes place inside River Tam’s troubled mind. There are also little call-backs to the show that Zack Whedon inserts in his script that will make any Firefly fan smile. However, it seems that half of the comic is retelling “Objects in Space” without the philosophical elements and dark humor. Also, the reason for the change in Mal and Inara’s relationship is barely touched on. How was their sexual tension resolved?...

The companies say that they’ll offer comScore‘s validated Campaign Essentials (or vCE) to buyers who use Google‘s DoubleClick ad platform — providing advertisers with real-time data showing how well their digital sales pitches are working so they can quickly adjust messages that aren’t hitting the mark. That could appeal to brand managers who’ve been skittish about the medium as they continue to spend on television and other tried-and-true ad outlets. “It allows us to radically simplify digital media buying for the industry, while enhancing quality and accountability,” says comScore President Serge Matta. “This directly addresses many of the everyday challenges that prevent our clients from investing further in digital.” The initiative will begin in the U.S. this year for video and desktop display ads; they plan to add mobile and cross-platform later. Once rolled out, Google and comScore say that they’ll ask the Media...

Published by Dark Horse Comics
There are only two known truths in the entire universe: 1, that a series created by Joss Whedon will more than likely suffer cancellation (or get shot down before it’s even made!), and 2, that the cancelled series will live on to some degree in comics. With the live-action adventures of Buffy and Angel most certainly dead, their transition to comics to tell the later instalments was only a logical move by Whedon. Firefly/Serenity was a different situation altogether. Axed after less than one full season, Joss was able to bring back the crew for one more adventure, this one released in cinemas. Other than the dismal box office reception of Serenity,...

Inhumanity #1
Writer: Matt Fraction
Penciller: Olivier Coipel
Inker: Mark Morales
Colorist: Laura Martin
Publisher: Marvel Comics
On paper, Inhumanity seems like it could be a cool book or event. There are sci-fi elements (futuristic machines and medicines), political intrigue (who will succeed Black Bolt as leader of the Inhumans), and even some superheroics (the cool Inhuman transformations, guest appearances by Avengers). It even was written by Matt Fraction, whose comic Sex Criminals was voted the best comic of the year by Time.com. But the humor and nuanced characterization that permeates Sex Criminals is absent from Inhumanity #1. In its place is clunky exposition and clashing art styles. The text heavy and (often) tiny panels allow Olivier Coipel and flashback artists Dustin Weaver and Leinil Yu little room to illustrate the past and present of the Inhumans. The first page is gorgeous, but it mainly goes downhill from there.
Inhumanity #1′s biggest weakness is its storytelling.

It’s fun to see Wall Street analysts defend the pay TV oligopoly’s bundled pricing as a model of market capitalism — and a kind of public service. And nobody does it better than Needham and Co analyst Laura Martin, who has some eye-popping estimates this week in her intriguing analysis of what might happen if consumers had the freedom to just pay for the networks they want. She figures that could result in the loss of at least 124 channels, $45B a year of TV ad sales, 1.4M jobs, $20B in annual tax payments, and $117B in market value for media company investors. The big problem: Channels need to reach at least 30M households in order to be measured by Nielsen, and most wouldn’t cross that threshold if they had to compete on their own. That would endanger much of the $56B that national advertisers paid content creators in...

After nine months of uncertainly, Hulu is finally set to employ some new long-term leadership at the top. The premium online video platform is reportedly close to naming Fox exec Mike Hopkins as its CEO. Hulu's CEO was thrown wide open after its inaugural topper, Jason Kilar, announced his departure from the company at the beginning of January. Since then, Andy Forssell has served as the acting CEO, leading the company as it fielded offers from a plethora of potential buyers. In July, Hulu's ownership group decided not to sell, and now they have apparently chosen Hopkins as the man who will lead the next phase of the platform's development. Hopkins appointment would seem to signal a redoubled commitment to the network TV model that made Hulu a major player in the first place. “The money is in distribution fees from cable, satellite and telecom industries,” notes analyst Laura Martin in a report from Bloomberg.

Talks with cable companies and TV networks about just such a plan “seem to be heating up,” according to a blog post by former Wall Street Journal reporter Jessica Lessin. This would be a premium service for Apple, she says — and distributors have an incentive to consider the idea because the consumer electronics company would compensate them for the revenues they’d lose. Apple CEO Tim Cook and Svp Eddy Cue raised the idea with some execs last week at Allen & Co’s Sun Valley mogulfest, Lessin says. The company has been working for years to develop its own TV set and service; last year Cook called it “an area of intense interest for us.” But owners of TV rights have a good thing going with pay TV providers, and for the most part have been unimpressed with Apple’s efforts to join the club. Apple’s idea to compensate...

“X-Men” #2
Written by Brian Wood
Drawn by Olivier Coipel
Inking by Mark Morales, Scott Hanna and Olivier Coipel
Colouring by Laura Martin, Matt Milla, and Christina Strain
Published by Marvel
Last month’s stellar issue of Brian Wood’s “X-Men” introduces the comic’s debut villain, Arkea, twin sister of Sublime, and she immediately poses a threat to the heroes, and to the X-academy at large, which is put under lock-down mode upon her discovery. The issue explodes into a fury of action which spills out over several of the comic’s pages, jumping out of the panels onto a fantastically drawn two-page spread. Coipel’s drawings received much deserved praise in #1, and in this book they are even better; faces are depicted with a great range of emotions; sense of spatial relations is effectively communicated, with the lock-down pages feeling every bit as claustrophobic as they should. And for...
