This heartbreaking animated story, loosely based on the life of a Japanese fighter plane designer, marks the swansong of the great Hayao Miyazaki
Hayao Miyazaki's 'final feature' (the master announced his retirement last year) is a breathtaking dream of flying crafted with hand-drawn attention to detail a rich treat for the eye and soul alike. Inspired by the life of second world war Zero fighter plane designer Jiro Horikoshi, and the writings of Tatsuo Hori (the film is dedicated "a tribute" to both), this "work of complete fiction" plays out over a troubled historical canvas encompassing the great Kanto earthquake of 1923, years of depression, the tuberculosis epidemic, the descent into war all of which create what the director calls "a sense of stagnation more intense than the one hanging over Japan today".
Yet against such a bleak background, ambition and imagination take flight. As a boy, nearsighted Jiro meets...

Miyazaki’s Swan Song A Somber Flight Of Fancy
Earlier this month, legendary animator Hayao Miyazaki, writer and director of such masterpieces as Spirited Away, Castle in the Sky and My Neighbor Totoro, announced his final retirement (this isn’t his first). How fitting that his final feature takes up his favorite thematic motif, that of magical phenomenon and fantastic human achievement – flight. Oddly, for the first time in his lengthy career, Miyazaki has embraced the more realistic storytelling of his partner Isao Takahata, yet he hasn’t abandoned the lyrically imaginative storytelling he’s known for. With Studio Ghibli’s signature hand drawn and heartfelt feel, The Wind Rises fictionalizes the life of Jiro Horikoshi, the chief engineer behind the famed Japanese Zero fighter jet, and blends his tail with that of Tatsuo Hori, author of the novel from which the film’s epithet originates.

Having recently wrapped an Oscar-qualifying run in New York and La, the first Us trailer has now debuted for Hayao Miyazaki’s The Wind Rises, which the legendary filmmaker has said will be his final film as a director.
The latest in a long line of hugely popular Studio Ghibli movies, The Wind Rises opened in Japan over the summer, and is set to open wide in the States early next year. The studio is maintaining its relationship with Disney, who are handling its distribution in North America under the Touchstone Pictures banner, and will no doubt be giving it a big push for the Oscars.

This is the domestic trailer for Hayao Miyazaki's final animated feature film, The Wind Rises. Miyazaki is one of the greatest animators of our time, and as you've seen, it looks like it's going to be a beautifully animated movie.
The movie was inspired by Miyazaki's own manga, Kaze Tachinu, and a novel by Tatsuo Hori. The story focuses on Jirō Horikoshi, the designer of Japan's famed Mitsubishi A6M Zero fighter plane of World War II.
Disney will give the movie a limited release in the U.S. on February 21st and will expand wide a week later. I'm a huge fan of Miyazaki's work, and I can't wait to see this one!

And here's the longer Japanese trailer. The Wind Rises (風立ちぬ Kaze Tachinu) is a 2013 Japanese animated historical fantasy film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki.[2] The film is based on the manga of the same name, which is in turn based on a short story by Tatsuo Hori, a writer, poet and translator from mid-20th century (Showa period) Japan. Kaze Tachinu is a fictionalised biography of Jiro Horikoshi, designer of the Mitsubishi A5M (featured in the movie) and its famous successor, the Mitsubishi A6M Zero. Both were fighter aircraft that the Empire of Japan used in World War II. The Wind Rises gets a limited release in the Us starting February 21st, 2014, expanding a week after, in addition to the awards qualifying run in New York and Los Angeles from November 8th-14th.

Ahead of its February 21 limited stateside release (it already had an Oscar-qualifying run in New York and Los Angeles that wrapped November 14), Hayao Miyazaki's final animated feature "The Wind Rises" has gotten a U.S. trailer from distributor Touchstone Pictures. The company plans to expand the film's theatrical release on February 28. The completely dialogue-free trailer relies purely on gorgeous, hand drawn imagery to reel you in. The film, a mix of real-life stories of aircraft designer Jiro Horikoshi and poet Tatsuo Hori, tells a tale of love, war and perseverance. It topped the Japanese box office for nine weeks after opening in July. Watch trailer below, and let us know your thoughts in the comments section.

Considered a strong contender not only for a nomination but also a possible win — particularly considering it's Hayao Miyazaki's final directorial effort — "The Wind Rises" may have a more difficult hill to climb than easier to swallow fare like Disney's upcoming "Frozen." But considering the animated studio has the best of both worlds by distributing the two movies, they should be happy no matter what happens as both are seen as shoo-ins for nods. Anyway, after subtitled international versions hit this summer, the first U.S. trailer for Miyazaki's movie is here and to ensure that you forgot this movie is in Japanese and/or will be dubbed for North American audiences, it has zero dialogue to explain what's happening. So, we'll tell you. The movie is based on the novel by Tatsuo Hori and the manga by Miyazaki, and is inspired by the life of Jiro Horikoshi, the...

Disney has just released the first official, domestic trailer for what is expected to be Hayao Miyazaki's final feature film, The Wind Rises. Based on Miyazaki's own manga and the 1937 short novel of the same name by Tatsuo Hori, this is the story of Jirc Horikoshi, the aircraft engineer most remembered for his design work on the Mitsubishi A6M Reisen "Zero", Japan's famous World War II fighter aircraft. During the WWII years, the Miyazaki family business manufactured aircraft parts, including the windshields and rudders used on the Zero. I caught The Wind Rises as my final film at the Toronto Film Festival and as much as I was able to appreciate the wonderful animation Miyazaki has always delivered, the film itself just didn't do it for me. Here's a snippet from my review: Careless storytelling ... and the meandering nature of most every scene in-between, no matter how excellent the animation,...

Famed Japanese filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki is back with his first animated film in five years, "The Wind Rises." In "Wind," Miyazaki, the Oscar winner behind such modern classics as "Spirited Away" and "Howl's Moving Castle," tells the story of Jiro Horikoshi, the inventor of the Mitsubishi A6M Zero fighter plane flown by the Japanese in World War II.
Though the story is mostly fictionalized -- it's based on a novel by Tatsuo Hori -- Horikoshi was real, and the movie depicts his youth in the 1920s, when Japan was going through a depression and suffered a devastating earthquake. The trailer showcases stunning footage of that incident and its aftermath, and is full of the lush, ethereal imagery that is Miyazaki's signature style.

Last month, we showed you the Japanese trailer for Hayao Miyazaki's first animated film in five years, The Wind Rises. Now there is one with English subtitles, but they’re seriously hard to focus on when there is so, so much stunning imagery going on. Based on Tatsuo Hori’s novel, it tells the fictionalized story of Jiro Horikoshi, the engineer of the Mitsubishi A6M Zero fighter plane the Japanese used in World War II. The film has already been a huge hit in Japan, earning $57 million so far, and will make its North American debut at the Toronto International Film Festival. Hope Pixar wasn’t planning on an easy route to another Oscar this year.

Less than a week after it was announced that Hayao Miyazaki's latest animated film with Studio Ghibli The Wind Rises would be premiering at this year's Toronto International Film Festival, a first international trailer for the film has surfaced. Master animation craftsman Hayao Miyazaki can usually be found making lyrical, fantastical films such as Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke. For his latest release, however, he’s dipping into history, which previously proved fruitful ground for the heartbreaking Grave Of The Fireflies. The result is The Wind Rises, which is already big at the Japanese box office and which will premiere across the pond at the Toronto International Film Festival. Now there's a subtitled (and reasonably spoiler-filled, it looks like) trailer. The Wind Rises spins two true stories together: that of Jiro Horikoshi, visionary designer of one the most beautiful airplanes in history – the famed Zero fighter – and the poet Tatsuo Hori. But simply because the film tackles real-life issues such as war, loss, suffering and romance, don’t go thinking it won’t be shot through with the typically beautiful Studio Ghibli style and entrancing animation. Though the trailer...

At this point a domestic distributor has not yet picked up the rights to the film, but I have to suspect that if Disney doesn't swoop in it will land in the hands of Gkids. Directed by Hayao Miyazaki (Ponyo), the Wind Rises features voices of Hideaki Anno, Miori Takimoto, Steven Alpert, Morio Kazama, Keiko Takeshita, Hidetoshi Nishijima, Mirai Shida, Mansai Nomura and Masahiko Nishimura. The film will screen as part of the Toronto International Film Festival. This decade-spanning epic from maestro Hayao Miyazaki is his most unique films to date, inspired by the true stories of Jiro Horikoshi, visionary designer of one the most beautiful airplanes in history — the famed Zero fighter — and the poet Tatsuo Hori, whose verses are brought to life by the vivid animation of Studio Ghibli.

If there’s one thing that Hayao Miyazaki loves (besides animation, obviously), it’s flight. Nearly all of the legendary animator’s films have seen characters take to the skies in one gorgeous sequence after another, via dragons, broomsticks, fighter planes, Totoros, and anything else willing to go airborne. Miyazaki’s latest film, The Wind Rises, puts his love of flying front and center, and today marks the arrival of a brand new (and absolutely gigantic) four-minute trailer. Check it out below. You may have noticed that the footage from The Wind Rises has no subtitles, but that won’t matter to diehard Miyazaki fans (and the diehard diehards have undoubtedly already learned Japanese). And luckily, there isn’t that much dialogue in the trailer to begin with. But what’s present in abundance is gorgeous animation; especially where flight is concerned. The Wind Rises is based on a manga (also by Miyazaki), which is in turn...

Check out this stunning four minute trailer for Hayao Miyazaki's new animated film, The Wind Rises. I love Miyazaki's style, and this movie is beautifully animated. There's no doubt it's going to be an incredible addition to his resume.
The movie was inspired by Miyazaki's own manga, Kaze Tachinu, and a novel by Tatsuo Hori. The story focuses on Jirō Horikoshi, the designer of Japan's famed Mitsubishi A6M Zero fighter plane of World War II.
The movie is set to premiere in Japan on July 20th. It will eventually make its way to the states, and I can't wait! Enjoy the new trailer!

Adapted from the manga of the same name by Hayao Miyazaki, which is in turn based on a short story by Tatsuo Hori, a writer, poet and translator from mid-20th century Japan.

It has been five years since animated film legend Hayao Miyazaki's last feature, the critically lauded Ponyo, so it's very exciting to get a glimpse at his next offering, especially four full minutes of it. Entitled The Wind Rises, the film is based on a novel by Tatsuo Hori and a manga by Miyazaki, and tells the fictionalized story of Jiro Horikoshi, the engineer of the Mitsubishi A6M Zero fighter plane the Japanese used in World War II. Though this is the foreign trailer, don't worry; you don't need English subtitles as there is very little dialogue and it would only distract from the seriously stunning imagery. ...

As The Film Stage notes, marketing can be exhausting. And with Comic-Con in full swing, the deluge of material from the conference floor in San Diego can seem pretty crass. Essentially, the whole shindig is one big excuse for studios to dump all kinds of swag both to those roaming around the halls of the massive nerd complex, and online, where character posters galore and the like scream at your eyeballs for attention. So, a lengthy trailer that actually shows footage and isn't cluttered up by voiceover and text and teases goes down like a much needed glass of water in the desert. A four-minute spot has emerged for Hayao Miyazaki’s "The Wind Rises," and it's pretty generous peek at a film that animation heads are certainly looking forward to. Based on the novel by Tatsuo Hori and the manga by Miyazaki, the film is inspired by the life of Jiro Horikoshi,...

Iconic Japanese animation film staple Studio Ghibli is renowned for gorgeous, ethereal creations that reference ancient fairy tales with a modern sensibility. Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle and more of these sentimental films are the subject of DeviantArtist Yaphleen's poster illustrations. The painterly artworks inspire an overwhelming feeling of wonder and imagination — just like the movies. We've gathered several of them below for you to enjoy. The animation giant is releasing a new film on July 20 from the estimable Hayao Miyazaki: Kaze Tachinu is based on the manga of the same name (and short story by Tatsuo Hori). It's a biopic about the engineer who designed Japanese fighter planes during World War II. [via...

Exciting news lands today for Studio Ghibli fans. Filmmaker Mami Sunada is completing the final cut on a documentary that goes behind the scenes of the legendary Japanese animation studio. The film is titled "The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness," and centers -- naturally -- on auteur Hayao Miyazaki, who is finishing "Kaze Tachinu," and on Isao Takahata ("Grave of the Fireflies"), who has "The Tale of Princess Kaguya" in the pipeline. Also a point of focus is producer Toshio Suzuki, who is helping on both projects. Few other details have emerged about the doc, but it will premiere in Japan this fall. Per the Film Stage, it will offer a "fly-on-the-wall look at everyday work at the studio." Meanwhile, Miyazaki's "Kaze Tachinu" ("The Wind Rises") is scheduled for a debut in Japan in less than two weeks. It is the director's first film in five years, and centers on...

Here's a teaser trailer for Studio Ghibli and director Hayao Miyazaki’s next animated film The Wind Rises, and it gives us our first look at some footage from the beautifully animated film. I'm a huge fan of Miyazaki, and this looks like another masterpiece.
The movie was inspired by Miyazaki's own manga called Kaze Tachinu, and a novel by Tatsuo Hori. The story focuses on Jirō Horikoshi, the designer of Japan's famed Mitsubishi A6M Zero fighter plane of World War II.
I'm sure this will end up being another amazing Miyazaki film. It will premiere in Japan on July 20th. It will eventually make its way to the states, and I'm looking forward to seeing it.

Though a Us release date has yet to be decided upon, Japan needn’t wait too much longer for Hayao Miyazaki’s long-awaited return to the directing chair with The Wind Rises, as the Studio Ghibli film is due out there in under one month’s time (July 20th). History tells us it won’t come stateside until about a year from now, which makes this initial teaser for the film such a pleasant sight.
Short as it is, the images have a sort of poetry to them that you only get with a Miyzaki-directed film. It isn’t enough that he simply script a film, although it never hurts. Where Miyazaki does best is behind the reigns. Compare his last directorial effort, Ponyo, to its immediate successor in the Studio Ghibli canon, The Secret World of Arriety, whose script was contributed by the team of Miyazaki and Keiko Niwa,...

The first official footage from Hayao Miyazaki's latest animated feature, The Wind Rises has arrived and while there aren't any subtitles you can still marvel at the animation as the sun rises over a green field and the film's central character takes to the sky. Based on Miyazaki's own manga and the 1937 short novel of the same name by Tatsuo Hori, The Wind Rises is the story of Jirc Horikoshi, the aircraft engineer most remembered for his design work on the Mitsubishi A6M Reisen "Zero", Japan's famous World War II fighter aircraft. During the WWII years, the Miyazaki family business manufactured aircraft parts, including the windshields and rudders used on the Zero. Watch the teaser trailer below. The film arrives in Japan on July 20, but there are currently no details on a Us release.

It has been six years since beloved animation filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki delivered 2008's "Ponyo," but fans of his work have a reason to get excited again. Miyazaki's got a new movie on the way, one that promises to give viewers another window on a wholly unique world, and the first footage has arrived. Debuting on Japanese TV -- hence the shots of random dudes in the top right corner, overlaid text and voiceover -- a 30-second montage/teaser of footage from "The Wind Rises" has dropped, and well, it looks Miyazaki-esque in the best way possible. Based on the novel by Tatsuo Hori and the manga by Miyazaki, the film is inspired by the life of Jiro Horikoshi, the man who designed the Zero fighter plane that was used during World War II, most infamously during the Pearl Harbor attack, which perhaps points to a shift in direction from Miyazaki.

Japanese animation legend Hayao Miyazaki will release his first feature in five years, "Kaze Tachinu" ("The Wind Has Risen") in 2013. The film centers on the life of Zero fighter designer Jiro Horikoshi, and is inspired by the Tatsuo Hori novel of the same title, and a manga Miyazaki created for the magazine "Gekkan Model Graphics." From the description and the images from the manga (above), the film seems to have similarities to the director's 1992 "Porco Rosso," which focused on a 1920s bush pilot who looked like a humanoid pig. Miyazaki's last film was 2008's "Ponyo." The director won a Best Animated Feature Oscar for 2001's "Spirited Away," and was nominated for 2004's "Howl's Moving Castle." "Spirited Away" still holds the title of Japan's all-time biggest box office hit. Repertory theater audiences in select cities were treated to the Studio Ghibli...
