Daisy DeWitt
- Actress
Daisy DeWitt is the film and television name used by stage actress and
comedienne Marian Mears (b. early 1900s, d. 1960s), who during the
1920s was featured in productions staged by her husband, John Henry
Mears (b. 1878, d. 1956), notable Broadway producer and globe-circling
world record holder in 1913 and again in 1928. The Mears couple
divorced but remained lifelong friends and when Marian married again in
1950, to winery executive Ralph Koehler, Mears was best man at their
wedding. Marian's bridesmaid was her longtime close friend, the
glamorous film actress Hillary Brooke. In the early years of network
television, billed as Daisy DeWitt, Marian performed brief comedy roles
and walk-ons in episodes of the popular Abbott and Costello television
program. She often served as stand-in for Hillary Brooke during the
filming of television shows and motion pictures, including the 1952
movie "Abbott and Costello Meet Captain Kidd." In ill health, Marian
spent her last years at the retirement home for motion picture actors
and actresses in Calabasas, California.
