Foo Fighters' HBO series Sonic Highways visited Washington D.C. Friday night, which marked a homecoming of sorts for Dave Grohl: The rocker was raised in the Virginia suburbs outside of D.C. – his mother still lives there – and he started out drumming for area acts like Mission Impossible, Dain Bramage and "his favorite band ever," Scream.
In addition to recording the Sonic Highways track "The Feast and the Famine," Grohl also provides an extensive look at a pair of homegrown genres that became the backbone of the D.

At this point it's common knowledge that go-go star Chuck Brown and jazz musician Duke Ellington hail from D.C. But did you know iconic actress Goldie Hawn is from Silver Spring, Md., or that Nirvana drummer and Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl grew up in Springfield, Va.?
We all know there are many talking heads and politicians that move to the District for work and celebrities from all over descend on the city for the annual White House Correspondents Dinner, but along the way, those who grew up or were born in the Washington metro area get lost in that mix.
So we've put together a slideshow of celebrities that you perhaps you didn't know are natives of the Dmv:
And if you can't get enough D.C. celebs, check out Bigwig Digs, a website dedicated to taking snapshots and chronicling the locations of the residences of famous D.

Doc Watson, pioneering artist of roots-conscious Americana, dies in North Carolina hospital, according to representatives. Bob Dylan once compared the precise acoustic guitar picking of Doc Watson to "water running." Sadly, the water runs no more today. The seven-time Grammy winner, blind since infancy, died at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C., according to his representatives at Folklore Productions, a management company in Santa Monica, California. Doc had undergone colon surgery Thursday. Remembered for his mountain-rooted sound and uniquely fast style of flatpicking, the National Medal of Arts recipient is survived by his wife of 66 years, Rosa Lee, his daughter, Nancy Ellen, two grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, and a brother, David. This was a particularly sad week for the musical world. We lost four greats: Chuck Brown, the godfather of Go-Go; country-rock pioneer Doug Dillard; supreme disco diva Donna Summer; and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, who did more to promote art song than anyone else in the recording era.
Chuck Brown was the most innovative of them, and the funkiest. Born in 1936, he paid his dues as a guitarist in various R&B bands in the '60s. His funk band The Soul Searchers made two classic albums for Sussex, We the People (1972) and Salt of the Earth (1974). "Ashley's Roachclip" on the latter includes a drum break that became one of the sampled breaks in hip-hop; "Blow Your Whistle" from the same LP is also much-sampled.
It's debatable when Go-Go originated as a separate style; originally, it denoted merely party music or a dance club. But in live performance, in Brown's home territory in and around Washington D.

The "Godfather of Go-Go" Chuck Brown has died at age 75 after battling pneumonia, according to news reports.
The Associated Press reported that Brown had been in the hospital since April 18 and died yesterday, May 16, at Johns Hopkins University Hospital.
Earlier this month, the Washington Post reported that sources said Brown initially went to the hospital because of arthritis problems, and there, doctors found a blood clot. Brown had an operation to have the clot removed, but he then developed pneumonia, the Washington Post reported.
Pneumonia occurs when there is some sort of infection -- whether it be bacterial or viral, or caused by fungi or parasites -- that leads to inflammation of the lungs. The most common bacterium that causes pneumonia is Streptococcus pneumonia, when acquired outside of the hospital.
In 2009, 1.1 million hospital discharges were for pneumonia, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Statistics. There were 50,774 deaths in the U.

Chuck Brown, the man credited with taking funk one step further to create go-go -- the beat-heavy music that influenced hip-hop artists from Run Dmc to Nelly -- is dead at 75. He passed away at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Md., from complications from sepsis.
Brown had been hospitalized for pneumonia in early May, but had trouble recovering and succumbed on Wednesday (May 16), his manager tells The Washington Post.
Along with his band, the Soul Searchers, Brown spent four weeks atop the R&B singles chart in 1978 with his signature song "Bustin' Loose." That was go-go's big moment in the national spotlight. It faded quickly after, but lived on in the Washington, D.C. area where Brown continued to perform and young kids would set up makeshift drum sets on street corners to play the infectious go-go beat.

Washington (AP) — Chuck Brown, who styled a unique mix of funk, soul and Latin party sounds to create go-go music in the nation's capital, has died after suffering from pneumonia. He was 75. These cupcakes could actually be "hot and dangerous." A Washington DC-area bakery has been baking all sorts of delicious treats in honor of famous celebrities and may soon offer a Kesha-themed cupcake.
Buzz Bakery recently did a cake for the 75th birthday of Chuck Brown, often times called the "Godfather of Go-Go." Before that, they designed cupcakes for a Katy Perry performance in the area. They mimicked the bra the pop star wore for the "California Gurls" music video and dropped the creations off at her dressing room (they got to stay for the show!).
They may soon offer a Kesha cupcake. "We've been talking about doing a Kesha cupcake, where everything in it would have alcohol, but we haven't done it yet," baker Tiffany MacIsaac says. "But the Kesha cupcake may be coming soon."...

Think about that first mixtape you made for someone you cared about. What was on it? What wasn't? How many hours did you spend coming up with the perfect songs, in the perfect order, parsing the collection with chemist-like precision to make sure there were no subconscious errors or possibilities for misinterpretation?
Defining love musically has never been easy, but the team behind the soundtrack for "Crazy, Stupid, Love." offer their attempt: electronic music and neo-folk singer-songwriters.
Aside from the occasional forays into classic R&B (Doris Troy's "Just One Look") and modern funk (The Bamboos' "On the Sly"), downtempo groups and acoustic male singers dominate the album. Thievery Corporation, seemingly included on one out of every two indie film soundtracks these days, makes two appearances with "The Numbers Game" off 2008's "Radio Retaliation" (featuring go-go pioneer Chuck Brown) and "The Heart's a Lonely Hunter" off 2005's "The Cosmic Game.

The Crazy, Stupid, Love soundtrack. Although few would argue with the assertion that love can indeed be characterised as both ‘crazy’ and ‘stupid’ (er, assuming we’re talking about the libidinous variety, rather than the love one might feel for a treasured family pet – say, a cute li’l wabbit. Aw), the soundtrack to the forthcoming movie with a title constituted of those three words is not so much daft lunatic, instead being more of a safe ‘n’ steady affair.
Directed by the I Love You Phillip Morris pairing of Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, Crazy, Stupid, Love on first inspection appears to be an odd couple bromance, with Steve Carrell as the middle-aged sad sack being giving pick-up tips by Ryan Gosling’s smooth-talking slickster. However the trailer indicates that the dramatic element of the story is at least as prevalent as the humorous one, and the soundtrack provides a further hint of this,...

Hollywood, California — On Saturday night, the eve of the 53rd Grammy Awards, the Roots were unstoppable, unpredictable and unprecedented as they took the stage to perform their seventh annual Pre-Grammy Jam Session. But to call the event just a jam session would be quite the understatement. Similar to the years prior, the Roots played for hours on end, covering every genre of music from the blues to hip-hop to funk and rock and roll while inviting fellow musician friends — both old school and new — onstage.
"Every Jam Session you expect the unexpected," explained drummer ?uestlove when MTV News caught up with him just before his band took the stage.

Just for a quick memory jog, remember who was a big winner at last year’s Grammys? Beyonce! Other big nominees this year include Bruno Mars with seven nominations, and Jay-z, Lady Gaga and Lady Antebellum with six each. John Legend and B.o.B follow closely with five. Katy Perry, who’s performing for VH1 Divas Salute the Troops (Sunday, Dec. 5, at 9/8c), scored four nominations, including one for Album of the Year for Teenage Dream. What’s your take on the nominees this year? Did anyone get left out?...

The 53rd Annual Grammy Award nominations were announced Wednesday, Dec. 1 on CBS. The awards themselves air February 13, 2011- and with nominees like these, it's sure to be quite a show.
Nominee Katy Perry was on hand to perform.... and to comment after receiving her Album of the Year nomination. "It's like no other awards show because I feel like you're being recognized by your peers, so when they nominate you, it's kind of like a win," she says. "But if I win, I won't say that."
Eminem received the most nominations with 10. Behind him, Bruno Mars got 7 and Jay-z, Lady Antebellum and Lady Gaga each received six nominations. Craig Ferguson was floored by his first nomination in the Spoken Word category - he tweeted, "I just got nominated for a damn Grammy. Take that low self esteem. #f***yeah." Only, you know... without the asterisks.
