A quartet of fast-rising British names are coming together for a buzzy new project launching at the Cannes market.
Bella Ramsey, Louis Partridge and Ruby Stokes are set to lead Sunny Dancer, the sophomore feature from George Jaques. Embankment Films is handling global pre-sales of the film, which it says showcases the “best of new British talent.”
“Sunny Dancer” follows Ivy (Ramsey), a teenager in remission from cancer, whose gloriously outspoken mum and well-intentioned dad insist she attend Children Run Free Camp, a summer retreat for young adults affected by cancer. The camp’s slogan, “Where kids come to kid,” does little to alleviate Ivy’s apprehension, and a quick Google search confirms her fears when she stumbles upon a cringeworthy promotional video filled with tacky messages and clichéd sunsets. As if conquering cancer wasn’t enough of a challenge, Ivy now faces the prospect of spending her summer at what she calls “chemo camp.

In the early 90s, producer Aaron Spelling and TV creator Darren Star struck primetime drama gold with the high school soap opera Beverly Hills 90210. The show laid the groundwork for some good old-fashioned scheduled viewing for homes waiting to see what kinds of trouble the kids at West Beverly would get into. While the series would get to put its characters in some compromising situations like Brandon’s gambling, Brenda‘s pregnancy scare, Dylan’s drug use or Donna Martin graduating, Spelling would explore more steamy stories with the spin-off Melrose Place. The show would crossover stars as Beverly’s Dylan and Kelly befriended Melrose resident Jake. And when Heather Locklear was added to the cast, the show’s popularity would skyrocket.

Apparently TV can’t get enough “Melrose Place.” The campy sudser from the 1990s, which was already rebooted once in the 2010s, is looking to make another comeback — and this time with three of the Og stars. Heather Locklear, Laura Leighton and Daphne Zuniga are all back to reprise their roles in the latest reboot, this time from writer Lauren Gussis.
Gussis will also exec produce with Leighton, Zuniga, Tiffany Grant and Jason Weinberg. Here’s the logline: “When one of their dearest friends dies suddenly, the Og residents of Melrose Place gather to honor the deceased. But the pressure cooker of a reunion soon uncovers old traumas, rekindles old romances, reignites old resentments, and reveals new secrets… throwing our characters into chaotic drama that’s reminiscent of the past, but with a much more modern perspective.”
CBS Studios is behind the reboot, based on the series created by Darren Star.

In what could only be a dream for many of us, Kelly Ripa shared the best moment of her life with fans on Live with Kelly and Mark today.
She kept saying that she must be dead and why aren’t the paramedics coming.
Kelly was so disappointed back in December when she was so sick, calling it her “deathbed,” and she missed a Madonna concert.
And then, even worse, Mark Consuelos, went without her, leaving her home alone and sick.
But this new development made up for her missing out in December.
Early in every Madonna concert lately, she starts with Vogue and pulls someone famous in the audience onstage to judge her dancers.
This time, Kelly was dragged onstage to do the deed with Madonna.
Kelly Ripa could not wait to share this life-changing moment
Kelly was still on cloud nine as she described what happened with Madonna the night before.

Dakota Johnson kicked off the holiday week by spending quality time with an important member of her team!
The 34-year-old actress was joined by her manager Jason Weinberg for dinner at Via Carota restaurant on Tuesday (November 21) in New York City.
Also having dinner at the same restaurant at the same time was Seth Meyers with his family and it looks like they may have run into each other!
Dakota has been working with Jason as her manager ever since she was 18, so he’s definitely family to her at this point.
“I want to grow with people. I am not interested in stepping on people’s shoulders to get somewhere,” she told THR about her team in 2021. “I care so much about trusting people and being trusted because this industry, it thrives on collaboration. You can’t do it by yourself.”

The art world is a cutthroat and judgemental arena. You’re the cat’s pajamas one day, but you’re old news if you take too long to deliver your next masterpiece. Surrounded by snobbery, bitter wine, and diamond-encrusted vultures waiting to pick your talented bones clean, artists endure a lot to remain relevant, and some would even kill for the chance to keep their spot in the public eye. In today’s The Kill Room trailer, a hitman, his boss, and an art dealer concoct a money laundering scheme that accidentally turns an assassin into an overnight avant-garde sensation.
Nicol Paone directs from a script by Jonathan Jacobson, with Uma Thurman, Samuel L. Jackson, and Joe Manganiello leading the cast, with Maya Hawke, Mike Doyle, Debi Mazar, Matthew Maher, Marianne Rendón, Gionna Daddio, Jennifer Kim, Amy Keum, Brandon Curry, and more.

Exclusive: Multi-Oscar nominated director Bruce Beresford is set to direct The Place I Belong about pro golfer Moe Norman.
The Place I Belong follows the rise of Norman, from caddie and bowling alley pinsetter to playing the Masters and on the pro tour. His eccentric behavior led Moe to be bullied out of the sport he loved, but he became an unknown legend, playing and winning smaller tournaments, setting course records, living hand to mouth, sometimes sleeping in his car or in sand traps at the courses he played.
David Carver is producing. Carver co-wrote screenplay with Mark Bergen, Josh Schorr and Todd Korgan, based on previous versions by Joshua Michael Stern, David Lee Miller and Eric Adams.
David Steinberg and Robyn Todd are EPs. Wayne Gretzky and Janet Gretzky are co-producers.
Beresford has directed over 25 films including the four-time Oscar winning Best Picture Driving Miss Daisy” which grossed over $145M WW back in 1989-1990. He also helmed Tender Mercies which won two Oscars and one Golden Globe; Breaker Morant.
Says Beresford, “The central character is delightfully eccentric and the story of his amazing life and career those around it, is told with humor, compassion, sophistication and insight. I enthusiastically accepted the offer to direct such a fascinating group of characters and story, told on and off the golf course.”
Carver adds, “Bruce’s skill with the period piece genre, particularly in transformational roles, and the simple fact that he makes very classy movies, has us overwhelmed with appreciation that he will be directing our 25-year passion project.”
Beresford is represented by David Gersh of The Gersh Agency. Steinberg and Todd are represented by Jason Weinberg and Michael Rosenberg of Untitled Entertainment.

In a new interview with The Financial Times to promote her family’s new alcohol brand, Emma Watson said she “wasn’t very happy” with being an actor before her recent hiatus from the screen.
“I wasn’t very happy if I’m being honest,” she said. “I think I felt a bit caged. The thing I found really hard was that I had to go out and sell something that I really didn’t have very much control over. To stand in front of a film and have every journalist be able to say, ‘How does this align with your viewpoint?’ It was very difficult to have to be the face and the spokesperson for things where I didn’t get to be involved in the process. I was held accountable in a way that I began to find really frustrating because I didn’t have a voice, I didn’t have a say.

A veteran producer and sales agent once told me that, for a billion dollars, anyone could buy their way into the Oscar race for Best Picture. In recent months, that prediction proved altogether generous.
While not a Best Picture contender, Andrea Riseborough’s performance in “To Leslie” demonstrated the potential of DIY campaigning to chart a surprising path into a major Oscar category. Controversial or not, and despite all the potential campaign violations it raised, Riseborough’s Best Actress nomination got the attention of other established actors who work on low-budget movies with limited resources. As one veteran awards consultant told me this week, “People are now going to say, ‘Where’s my Andrea Riseborough campaign?’”
The answer to that question requires some meticulous number-crunching as well as ample chutzpah. The Oscar race is often a Trojan horse for cinema that would go otherwise unrecognized by the U.S. industry,...

In the Academy’s Andrea Riseborough fracas, the loser is the actress herself. The respected 41-year-old British thespian earned an Oscar nomination for a lauded performance as a down-and-out alcoholic in scrappy indie “To Leslie” (Momentum Pictures), but her name will also be remembered for her association with the grassroots awards push that upended the traditional Oscar campaigning process.
While some champion the underdog success of “To Leslie,” others decry the methods deployed to achieve it. That’s why the Academy Board of Governors met on Zoom this week to discuss the process, a meeting attended by unhappy players such as Whoopi Goldberg, and Terilyn A. Shropshire.
Academy CEO Bill Kramer emerged with a quiet statement that while Riseborough could keep her nomination, campaign rules must be further updated and clarified. “We did discover social media and outreach campaigning tactics that caused concern,” he said. “These tactics are being addressed with the responsible parties directly.

Three days after Andrea Riseborough’s Oscar nomination sent shockwaves through Hollywood, questions have arisen about possible violations to the Academy’s campaign lobbying rules.
On Friday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced it had launched “a review of the campaign procedures around this year’s nominees, to ensure that no guidelines were violated, and to inform us whether changes to the guidelines may be needed in a new era of social media and digital communication.”
The investigation follows an aggressive grassroots campaign that saw Hollywood heavyweights sing Riseborough’s praises in the weeks leading up to voting. Amy Adams, Kate Winslet, Charlize Theron, and Melanie Lynskey were among those who hosted Q&As, screenings, and posted about the little-seen “To Leslie” on their personal social media pages.
Supporters of the film and of Riseborough’s performance have said that their social-media posts have reflected genuine enthusiasm for the performance,...

Netflix has dropped the trailer for “The Pentaverate,” Mike Myers’ new comedy series about a five-man secret society. The trailer comes after Myers joined Instagram last week and began posting cryptic images with fives in them: a five dollar bill, the 5 train in New York City, the five boroughs and a Five Guys storefront.
Ever the chameleon, Myers is taking on eight different roles in the new series. He’ll be joined by a star-studded cast that includes Ken Jeong, Keegan-Michael Key, Debi Mazar, Richard McCabe, Jennifer Saunders and Lydia West.
Per Netflix, the description for “The Pentaverate,” which will be told over six 30-minute episodes, asks, “What if a secret society of five men has been working to influence world events for the greater good since the Black Plague of 1347? Wouldn’t it be great if there really were secret societies holding ancient knowledge and the power to save the world? Maybe, maybe not, but if they had members played by Keegan-Michael Key, Ken Jeong and Debi Mazer, it’s a good bet we’d be fine either way. Luckily that’s the case in “The Pentaverate,” an upcoming Netflix series created by Mike Myers about a centuries-old organization (The Pentaverate) that ostensibly exists to save the world. But, based on the first trailer, appears to not be that great at it.
Watch the trailer above now.
Per the logline: “What if a secret society of five men has been working to influence world events for the greater good since the Black Plague of 1347? As this new series begins, one unlikely Canadian journalist finds himself embroiled in a mission to uncover the truth and just possibly save the world himself.

The Jeanaissance is alive and well. She may not like the term to describe her latest career peak, but there’s no denying that legendary actress Jean Smart is on a roll, having won her fourth Emmy Award on Sunday night.
Smart was named outstanding lead actress in a comedy series for her critically acclaimed role as stand-up Deborah Vance in HBO Max’s “Hacks.” This is her first lead acting win following victories in the supporting comedy actress (for “Samantha Who?”) and guest comedy actress (for “Frasier”) categories. She was also nominated last year for supporting actress in a limited series or movie for another HBO show, “Watchmen.”
