Cry Havoc #1 (Image): If you’ve ever read a comic by Simon Spurrier, you know basically what to expect: dissection of mythology and its meaning, sharp-tongued British colloqualisms, and a happy dash of absurdity. That said, Cry Havoc is different from his usual fare; it comes off as deadly serious, for one thing, and the jokes cracked are surrounded by intense monologues about the cannibalistic habits of hyenas and pre-emptive strike warfare. Heavy stuff for a werewolf book—except it’s not really a werewolf book in the traditional sense. There are no nighttime killing sprees, and Louise doesn’t wake up every morning with blood under her fingernails. This is partially because the story is told in three separate timelines and with three separate colorists for artist Ryan Kelly, whose attention to detail and paneling style makes Lou’s journey easy to follow despite its narrative complexity. Stick around...

It turns out that the distance between Afghanistan and Bangor, Maine, is much shorter than one might think. During a stop on his Country Nation world tour Monday night, Brad Paisley noticed two large cutouts of soldiers (known as "flat daddies" to the military community) being held up in the crowd. The singer grabbed the cutouts and told the crowd, "This is what it's all about. These guys are heroes." He signed the flat daddies and handed them back to the women who'd been holding them. Following the show, Paisley wrote on Twitter, "Anybody get a better shot from the...

At the beginning of Frank Miller’s seminal tale 300, we see a young Spartan expertly hunting and killing a pack of wolves. This young boy, pitted against nature, outnumbered but never outmatched, showcases the brutality of the Spartan culture. While the Spartans in 300 are made out to be a heroic race of warrior legends, the truth is that the Spartans were just as ruthless as their Persian counterparts a fact that Kieron Gillen is happy to tell in his new series Three from Image Comics.

Jack here; I’ve bashed two weeks of my contributions to Mark’s stuff for the week of the 11th, because a) I’m behind on my writing and b) I’m not sure how to get caught up otherwise. Bit of a mishmash then, but I’m sure you can handle it, intelligent and tolerant reader.

It’s tie-in central at Marvel this week as X-Men #5 (w/Brian Wood, a/David Lopez) continues Battle of the Atom with a brevity and economy that Brian Bendis should take note of if he wants to make his lion’s share of the chapters anywhere near as compelling or characterful. Wood and Lopez deliver a solid chapter that allows almost every member of the exponentially growing cast to shine while doing a stellar job of keeping the utterly ludicrous plot seem almost grounded in some kind of reality.

Infinity #1, Jonathan Hickman, Jim Cheung, Marvel Comics
Marvel’s latest event begins with this galaxy-spanning opus featuring Thanos as the great big bad guy. As regular readers will know, I’m not much of a Marvel guy (the Image cartel that has its grip on my pull list has slightly broken to produce a more egalitarian quartet of reviews this week). I tried out Age of Ultron earlier this year only to find it a fairly pedestrian affair that ended in a series of adverts. However, I’ve been requested to cast judgement on this
Infinity, however, begins strongly – there’s not a lot of focus on the Avengers, which I like. Instead we see Thanos’ agents destabilising galactic politics in a manner that eventually sees the Avengers leave the earth in order to sort these problems the heck out. Unfortunately,...

It’s a solo venture for me this week as Jack’s off to parts unknown to fight irradiated monkey lizards and track down an ancient elixir that cures hayfever and the sniffles. Or he just didn’t buy any comics. I get confused sometimes.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer #23 (Season Nine), Andrew Chambliss, Georges Jeanty, Dark Horse Comics
Plots thicken and implausibly deep holes in the Earth are delved into by Buffy & co. as her sister continues to fade from reality Marty McFly style and everyone seems to let Xander off the hook for essentially dooming the planet pretty quickly.
Shout outs to colourist Michelle Madsen, who imbues the Deeper Well with a warm, gorgeous golden glow, and penciler Georges Jeanty, who actually seems to have stepped up his game for the first time all season by including the occasional panel that doesn’t make the female cast look like thirteen year-olds.

Good news may be on it’s way for fans of Paul Cornell and Ryan Kelly’s recently-canceled “Saucer Country.” Fans may remember that the creator-owned Vertigo title met an unfortunate end earlier this year when it was included in DC’s latest round of cancellations. However, according to details revealed by writer Paul Cornell in a recent Suicide Girls interview, the wheels are already in motion to continue the sci-fi political thriller in a new comic book series as early as February next year!
“We haven’t signed contracts yet but I have every reason to believe we will be starting season two in comic form next year,” Cornell said in the interview. “In February, even. We’ve been talking to some lovely people about this and I think Saucer Country readers have a huge reason to be hopeful. I’m very much thankful to them for that.”

Hey gang, Mark here. Jack’s on holiday this week so I’ll be covering for him this and next week and then adding my own two cents to his ten dollars. I’ll try not to mess up the furniture arrangement.
Saga #12, Brian K. Vaughan & Fiona Staples, Image
Saga is always exceptional, and this week is no exception. With this issue they finish up the second story arc and their first year (happy anniversary, guys!) with a look at the series’ most disturbed antagonist, Prince Robot IV, as he arrives on a distant planet to investigate a lead from earlier on. This is largely a two-hander as His Highness probes intergalactic novelist D. Oswald Heist’s literary pacifism and the possibility that everybody’s favourite crossbreeders Alana and Marko might want to pay him a visit.
The book’s mix of heartbreaking flashback, rising tension and dry, writerly self-deprecation...

Kieron Gillen has unveiled Three. The Iron Man writer announced his five-issue Image Comics miniseries at New York Comic Con. The Ryan Kelly-illustrated title will dwell on the darker side of the Ancient Greek city state of Sparta. Pretty much the comic book Oscars, the 2012 nominations for the Eisner awards have been announced. There is quite are large showing from Marvel in the superhero department, not so much from DC. Surprising, considering the company’s high profile New 52 relaunch. Save for Jeff Lemire’s nomination for Best Writer, most of DC’s nomination are pre-relaunch, or from their Vertigo imprint which has been left untouched by the New 52. The nominations are usually as controversial as the Oscars, with books and whole companies being left out, much to fans, sometimes, anger and confusion.

As many of you may already know, each and every year, awards distributed at San Diego Comic Con to a few select (and noteworthy) nominees who are chosen by retailers and professionals in the comic book industry. The ceremony is better known as the Eisner Awards which is now heading into its 24th year with some great talent in the running. One of the most loved titles in this year’s nominee list is Marvel’s Daredevil, picking up 6 nominations that include Best Continuing Series, Best Single Issue, Best Writer (Mark Waid), Best Cover Artist (Marcos Martin), and Best Penciller/Inker Team Marcos Martin, and Paolo Rivera/Joe Rivera). DC also scored some decent recognition with their iZombie Vertigo series, gathering 3 nominations (Cover Art, Coloring, Inker/Penciller) for the creative team.

Fans of The X-Files rejoice, there’s a comic book on the horizon that may tickle your fancy! The new series I’m speaking of is the first issue of Saucer Country , a new entry from writer Paul Cornell and artist Ryan Kelly that’s just one of four new Vertigo titles being launched this month.
The story sets itself up as both a straightforward yet mysterious tale, no easy feat for a writer to convey. The reader is introduced to Arcadia Alvarado, a New Mexico Governor who is preparing to kick off her campaign as a runner on the Democratic ticket for the President of the United States. The Governor is portrayed as a true inspiration to many of her constituents; a strong woman standing firmly at the peak of her political career (up to this point). Vertigo has announced Saucer Country at New York Comic-Con. Paul Cornell will write the ongoing series for the DC Comics' mature imprint alongside artist Ryan Kelly (The New York Five). The title tells the story of Arcadia Alvarado, the Governor of New Mexico, who is 'abducted by aliens' on the eve of her announcement that she is running for President. "Those speech marks are because she's not exactly sure what happened," wrote Cornell on his blog. "But she's going to use all her staff and resources to find out. Paul Cornell has being a very busy man over the last few years. From writing probably the best two-parter of the Tennant era Doctor Who (Human Nature/Family of Blood) to the criminally cancelled Captain Britain and Mi:13 for Marvel to Stormwatch and Demon Knights for DC’s new 52, he has shown an unbelievable talent for crafting rich and detailed stories that leave you satisfied and wanting more. That trend is set to continue with Saucer Country, his newest series, set for release in 2012 under DC’s Vertigo Imprint.
Revealed by Blastr, the series is described ‘The West Wing does The X-Files”. Drawn by Ryan Kelly (Local), the story focuses on Arcadia Alvarado, governor of New Mexico and candidate for President of the United States of America. But when she is “abducted by aliens”, she unravels a plot that threatens the entire world.

Unhappy with the advertisements that have been showing up while you play "Angry Birds"? It sounds like you have a friend in Nathan Fillion, as he's been writing out some formal tweets to the game's makers complaining about what's been appearing on his screen.
Andy Diggle voiced some concerns as well today, listing off things he can't do in mainstream comics that leave him bewildered. Ryan Kelly's Death sketch, meanwhile, will not leave you bewildered, because it is gorgeous. The Instagram link to that and Foo Fighters and "American Idol" criticism all made the Twitter highlight reel today and await you after the jump.
I'm @brianwarmoth, and this is your Twitter Report for April 13, 2011.
@andydiggle I can show people having their heads cut off but I can't say "Goddamn." [pt. 2] I can show a woman being murdered with a pen through the eye socket but I can't have her killer call her a "bitch.

This post is intended as part of the Spielberg Blogathon hosted by Adam Zanzie and Ryan Kelly, which ends today. My interest in movies began with a specific interest in those made by Steven Spielberg. As a child, the unique fantasies of "Raiders of the Lost Ark" (which I wrote about a few years back), "E.T.," and "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" spurred my imagination in ways that nothing around me could. (I'm sure many children of the eighties and nineties can relate.) That became the seed from which my greater interests in cinema grew: Moving images showed me…...

Another selection of favourites from the Baron, look out for my Festive Fortnightly Favourites once I find some Christmas themed comics.
Uncanny X-Force 2 | Marvel | W: Rick Remender | A: Jerome Opena
This is one of the best comics I picked up this fortnight and the story of the new X-Force verse the resurrected Apocalypse is really building into a classic X-Men story. I’ve found comics produced without an inking stage to be very hit or miss, Jerome Opena’s pencils with Dean White’s colouring are definitely a hit, the use of pinks, purples, blues and greys sets this comic apart from the other mutant comics, and Opena’s facial expressions and figure work is spot on. Even the panel borders get a thumbs up from me, with panels set in the danger room having a soft edge, which hardens as the danger room program shuts down. Also check out the shot of Cavern-x,...

The MTV Splash Page desk wasn't the only "Walking Dead" press kit recipient this week. Artist Tony Moore also got one and tweeted about the conflict it created in his morning.
Other conflicts abounded in today's feed as well, with a reprimand for unproductive artists coming out of the Marvel offices, no sympathy from Ron Marz for the guy suing Mike Tyson, and Terry Moore contemplating a proper response to seeing his comics available via torrents. Find out where you stand and how much Ryan Kelly made off of an old issue of "Lucifer" below.

@tonymoore just got a super sharp little press kit from AMC for The Walking Dead. do i watch the pilot now, or wait till the premiere? what to do!

The Unwritten #17 Written By: Mike Carey & Peter Gross Art By: Peter Gross & Ryan Kelly Cover Art: Yuko Shimizu Price: $3.99 Publisher: Vertigo Comics Release date: September 15, 2010
Lizzie Hexam gets a choice of many different lives in The Unwritten #17 from Vertigo Comics. In the latest issue of The Unwritten, readers get an interesting journey through the life of one of the book’s supporting characters: Lizzie Hexam. The issue itself is not a standard 22-page issue, instead, readers get a chance to choose their own adventure. The issue is mapped out like a standard comic until a choice must be made to lead Lizzie’s life in one direction or another. The multiple choices make for an interesting read for fans of the series.
The Unwritten #17 itself was a very interesting read. Most comics are a quick read while this issue of The Unwritten was a pretty fulfilling read. The reader has...

The Twitter Report joins writer Brian Reed today in wishing Brian Michael Bendis a happy birthday. I'm not condoning the act of seeding his Wikipedia page with sketchy details about his past, but in honor of his special day it does look like Dr. Laura Schlessinger has decided to quit radio and January Jones has been cast as Emma Frost.
Elsewhere, Jim Lee posted some Batman and Joker sketches. I've linked to one of those below. There, you can also check out a tweet from one creator who will be missing the Wizard show in Chicago this year after more than a decade of attending and a mysterious pitch request that B. Clay Moore received from Marvel.
I'm @brianwarmoth, and this is the Twitter Report for August 18, 2010.
@BrianReed It's @Brianmbendis's birthday! You know what that means! Time for the annual edit to his Wikipedia page re: prior convictions.
