Rapper Roddy Ricch is the victor in a legal battle that claimed his highest-charting megahit “The Box” infringed on the copyright of a 1975 soul song titled “Come on Down.” In a biting ruling, a Manhattan-based federal judge found that “no reasonable jury could find that the works are substantially similar.”
“The (plaintiff’s) musical composition is a soul song that contains a melodic tune, while ‘The Box’ is a hip-hop song delivered in a monotone rap,” U.S. District Judge Analisa Torres wrote in her eight-page ruling obtained by Rolling Stone.

With artificial intelligence currently front and center across the creative community, YouTube has published a set of AI music principles and launched something it’s calling the YouTube Music AI Incubator with a group of artists, songwriters and producers from Universal Music Group.
The principles, which the giant Alphabet/Google-owned platform said “are rooted in its commitment to collaborate with the music industry alongside bold and responsible innovation in the space” are three. They were developed with Umg chairman-ceo, Sir Lucian Grainge, and shared today by YouTube CEO Neal Mohan.
They include: a commitment to embrace AI responsibly in partnership with the music industry; protections “that help balance the interests of copyright holders with those of the creative community on YouTube”; and scaling up safeguards to AI-generated content to address challenges like trademark and copyright abuse, misinformation, spam.

As conversations around artificial intelligence continue, YouTube has published its first set of principles regarding AI music. Not only that, but the video streaming site owned by Google has also launched its own YouTube Music AI Incubator.
The three principles were shared by YouTube CEO, Neal Mohan. According to the company, these fundamental principles reflect the company’s “commitment to collaborate with the music industry alongside bold and responsible innovation in the space.” Here are the three principles in full:
Principle #1: AI is here, and we will embrace it responsibly together with our music partners. As generative AI unlocks ambitious new forms of creativity, YouTube and our partners across the music industry agree to build on our long collaborative history and responsibly embrace this rapidly advancing field. Our goal is to partner with the music industry to empower creativity in a way that enhances our joint pursuit of responsible innovation.

03 Greedo is back home. After his return from a Texas county jail in January, the L.A. rapper released Halfway There, a 33-track odyssey replete with Greedo’s melodic flourishes. He followed it up by performing at South by Southwest in Austin and, in June, a two-night stint at the Novo in Los Angeles — a venue that marked a kind of homecoming. “The show was turnt up. Both sold out. A lot of rappers popped out for me,” Greedo explains. “The city hasn’t seen that for a while.” While in prison,...

When GloRilla arrives at a Hollywood bowling alley, she’s clearly off the clock, cozy and happy to be among familiar faces. No cameras, no fans — just her team, the two friends she came with, and a handful of security to ensure it stays that way. She’s relieved, at least in this moment, that no one is coming over to speak to her. In two days, it will be exactly one year since the release of her breakout single, “F.N.F. Thirty years ago when Robin Thicke was 16, he recorded his first album with R&b star Brian McKnight. But the music wasn’t epic.
“[The label] was willing to put it out, but there wasn’t going to be a lot of promotion money behind it, so I said, ‘Let’s shelve it,’” he recalls.
While still recording his own music, he went on to develop his musicality by writing and producing for others, including Michael Jackson, Usher, Christina Aguilera, Pink, Jordan Knight, Brandy, Raven-Symoné, 98 Degrees, Marc Anthony, Mya, Color Me Badd, Guy Sebastian, Brownstone, Will Young, Kevon Edmonds, Ron Keating, Chante Moore and others.
But he needed to get back to making music for himself, so the early twentysomething decided he wouldn’t cut his hair until he heard his song on the radio.

Attorneys hired by Jay-Z and Yo Gotti have dropped two lawsuits filed in Mississippi against prison officials for “inhumane” prison conditions.
The lawsuits were dismissed after the attorneys and the state’s Department of Corrections said that improvements were made at the facilities, including adding air conditioning, bathroom renovations, and updated electrical systems.
“We’re pleased that Parchman has started to address the cruel and inhumane prison conditions after the Department of Justice’s investigation, but we aren’t satisfied with short-term improvements,” Yo Gotti said in a statement to Billboard Monday.

A California-based songwriter is suing Roddy Ricch for copyright infringement, claiming the rapper’s highest-charting megahit “The Box” rips off elements of his 1975 song, “Come On Down.”
Greg Perry filed his lawsuit in federal court in Manhattan on Tuesday, alleging in his 18-page complaint that Ricch and Atlantic Records, among other co-defendants, released “The Box” in 2019 with “a complete duplication” of portions of his song, most notably its distinctive violin opening.

"They stood up for what was right." 1091 Pictures has debuted an official trailer for a documentary titled The Invaders, finally out on VOD this fall. The film originally premiered way back at the 2015 Doc NYC Film Festival, but has never been released since then or shown up anywhere else. The long wait is over. The Invaders follows the rise and fall of a militant black power group based in Memphis, Tn in the late 1960s. The film uncovers the history and significance of the often-overlooked group, detailing their involvement with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in the hours leading up to his assassination. The Invaders also touches on themes of race, government surveillance and economic injustice. Featuring interviews with key members, including Coby Smith, Charles Cabbage, John B. Smith, and John Gary Williams. Narrated by Nas, who also executive produces, with Yo Gotti, Craig Brewer, Peter Bittenbender, and filmmaker Sacha Jenkins.

A second Memphis rapper has died in a four-month span from injuries sustained from gunshot wounds. Snootie Wild was shot Friday in Houston, and his death was confirmed on his Instagram page on Saturday evening.
Best known for his song “Yayo” with Yo Gotti, Snootie Wild was found in a ditch next to an SUV. He was shot in the neck, Texas police said.
“Gone in body, but your Name & Legacy will live forever! #TeamYayo4Life,” the post read.
“It looks like he backed in there [the ditch] accidentally. Then the other vehicle pulled up, and folks got out of the car,” a Houston officer told a local television outlet.
“They were talking for a little bit, and then all of a sudden, gunfire went off. Only one shot, actually.”
Snootie Wild, born LePreston Porter, was not immediately pronounced dead, but remained alive through the night, his Facebook page said.
No arrests have been made.

It’s still “Encanto’s” world and everyone else is just living in it. But even with that soundtrack and its song “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” continuing their chokehold on the music charts, there was some fresh blood among debuting albums and singles this week, with Yo Gotti, Mitski and the teaming of Nicki Minaj and Lil Baby getting off to strong starts.
Disney’s “Encanto” soundtrack is Not. 1 on the Billboard 200 for the fourth straight week and fifth week overall. And it’s not looking to go away any time soon. This week’s total of 110,000 album-equivalent units represented just a 2% decline from the previous week. According to Billboard, “Encanto” is one of just six soundtracks to have clocked at least five weeks at No. 1 in the last three decades.

“Encanto” is the gift that keeps on giving for Disney as its soundtrack spends its fifth nonconsecutive week on top of the Billboard 200 for the tracking week of February 4 through February 10. In that time the film also earned triple Oscar nominations, two of which are for its music, appropriately enough. Read more about this week’s chart here at Billboard.com.

In case you weren’t aware, hip-hop is the music industry’s biggest and most lucrative genre, a multibillion-dollar juggernaut accounting for more than a third of all streams globally. One of the many to benefit from that popularity is Yo Gotti, the “Recession Proof” rapper and record company CEO who’s just spent big on a mansion within an exclusive Westlake Village enclave — the same guard-gated community where other residents include YouTube’s very own Trisha Paytas, Disney CEO Bob Chapek, NFL star Cooper Kupp, Heather Locklear and WWE star The Miz.
