For the last few years, I’ve taken it upon myself in my capacity as Sos co-founder and eternal DJ to gather up some of my favorite tracks of the year, along with excerpts of dialogue and scoring from some of my favorite films (and, this year, TV series!) of the year, and cram it into a mix that could fit onto a hypothetical CD-r. But since this has been the year of the mixtape (hello Guardians of the Galaxy, Mommy, and Boyhood), and since there’s been such an overwhelming bounty of great music to choose from, I opted for a “C120″ format – two “sides,” one hour each. Since non-film music is the one area of pop culture Sound on Sight will (hopefully) never devote a subsection to, it’s the one instance I allow myself every year to flex my geekery in this area.

For many, the Dave Matthews Band is summer. So, after a 20-year kinship with the band on the road, what exactly would a Dmb-less summer look like for devoted fans? Lucky for "Dave heads," they'll no longer have to ponder that prospect.
In 2010 the band announced they would be taking a hiatus from touring in 2011, but in the months that followed, an announcement was made that the multifaceted group — which includes Dave Matthews, Carter Beauford, Stefan Lessard and Boyd Tinsley, as well as Rashawn Ross, Tim Reynolds and Jeff Coffin (who stepped in after the death of founding member LeRoi Moore) — would be headlining a four-stop, multi-act Caravan festival from June to September.
On February 22, members of Dmb's fan club, the Warehouse, received a cryptic "save the date" e-mail...

Charles Bradley found his calling when he saw James Brown perform at The Apollo in 1964 and promptly began perfecting his moves at home with a broom-turned-microphone. But like his similarly influenced soul sister (and now label mate), Sharon Jones, he's spent most of the ensuing years just trying to get by -- honing his sound between day jobs over the years from New york to Alaska.
Things changed for the raw soul singer when Daptone Records' mastermind, Gabriel Roth, saw Bradley playing in a Brooklyn club one night (going by the name Black Velvet) and it wasn't long before Roth had Bradley back at the studio cutting 45's with The Sugarman 3 and other Daptone players.
Bradley's signature hard hitting track, "The World (Is Going Up In Flames)," feels like a product of these times, but like his original inspiration, sounds more like it emerged from a moment in the mid 60's.

Brooklyn’s Daptone Records usually signs acts that mine American funk of the mid-’60s to early ’70s, but Staten Island 10-piece The Budos Band steeps itself far more in ’70s African funk-rock. On The Budos Band III, Jared Tankel’s baritone sax and Andrew Greene’s trumpet (along with guests Dave Guy on trumpet and Daisy Sugarman on flute) frequently adopt the smoky tonality of the grooves found on Buda Musique’s Éthiopiques compilations, dominating cuts like “Raja Haje” and “Budos Dirge.” (The latter’s title belies its dramatic forward motion and cutting brass.) Budos doesn’t skimp on ...
