- Taught animal rights jurisprudence at law schools around the world, including Stanford Law School, the University of Miami Law School, St. Thomas University Law School, John Marshall Law School, Lewis & Clark Law School, Vermont Law School, Tel Aviv University, and the Autonomous University of Barcelona.
- Founded the Nonhuman Rights Project, an animal protection organization, inspired by Peter Singer's book "Animal Liberation".
- Graduated from Boston University Law School.
- Received an undergraduate degree from, the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia.
- From 1984 to 1994 he served as president of the Animal Legal Defense Fund.
- Wrote four books: Rattling the Cage: Toward Legal Rights for Animals (2000); Drawing the Line: Science & the Case for Animal Rights (2002); Though the Heavens May Fall: The Landmark Trial That Led to the End of Human Slavery (2005); and An American Trilogy: Death, Slavery, and Dominion Along the Banks of the Cape Fear River (2009).
