At a dinner celebrating Thom Browne’s 20th anniversary and his just-launched capsule collection at Saks Fifth Avenue, the designer told the guests — who included Diane Keaton, Janelle Monáe, Logan Lerman and Danai Gurira — that the night felt like a homecoming.
“L.A. is almost my second home … I do feel like I had five really formative years here that I still hold dear to this day,” Browne explained during a toast at Mr. Chow restaurant in Beverly Hills Thursday night.
Years before he launched his label, the designer of now-iconic suits that have redefined suiting had trekked to Los Angeles while searching for a professional passion. The late interior designer Paul Fortune, whose clients included Sofia Coppola and Marc Jacobs, befriended Browne and later offered his guesthouse as a residence. It was there, adjacent to a pool under the California sunshine, that Browne began to contemplate his future.

Star Wars has several projects in the works right now. There’s Mangold’s new Star Wars movie set way back in the past, and Waititi’s secret project, which he hinted might upset some fans. Also, there’s a movie in the works about Rey rebuilding the Jedi order 15 years into the future.
Rumor has it that it won’t kick off a whole new trilogy but will be a standalone film. Plus, Filoni is busy with ‘Ahsoka’ Season 2 and other stuff. Among all these, fans kept asking about ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Season 2. Ewan McGregor talked a bit about what could happen next in his LADBible interview.
The truth is I’ve talked about having to cover for doing the Obi-Wan season for years, I had to lie about that and I’m not lying about this now. I don’t know. There’s been no phone call to me from Lucasfilm,...

Star Wars has quite a list of projects in the works currently, from Mangold’s new Star Wars film that takes place thousands of years in the past to Waititi’s undisclosed project that he claimed “will piss off the fans.’ There’s also a new movie focusing on Rey’s restoration of the Jedi order 15 years in the future, which won’t, according to the rumors, lead to a new trilogy but will rather be a standalone movie. Additionally, Filoni is actively working on the development of ‘Ahsoka’ Season 2, among other upcoming projects.
In this sea of upcoming projects, fans were consistently asking about ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ season 2. Ewan McGregor shed some light on the potential future of the series during his LADBible interview:

There were only 12 channels in this week’s U.S. Top 50 that saw their YouTube viewership decline week-over-week, but four of those channels still wound up in the top five.
Thanks to those traffic dips, the gap between this ranking’s upper echelon and the rest of the field is thinning. The #1 channel, which is far ahead of the other contenders, didn’t seem to get that memo.

Rainbow Friends Fans earned a second straight #1 finish in the U.S. Top 50. Like a lot of the channels in this chart, the leading Shorts hub gets many of its views from young YouTube users who are into gaming.

Stephen Chow (aka Chow Sing-chi) has struck a deal with Douyin, the Chinese sister company of TikTok, to produce a slate of mini-drama series for mainland China audiences.
Mini dramas are a form of professionally-generated content that has become hugely popular in China, and to a lesser extent in other parts of Asia. Series typically have 20-100 episodes of 1-15 minutes each, though just a couple of minutes is typical. This makes them easily digestible and suitable for casual consumption on mobile devices. The most popular genres are comedy and romantic drama and many are derived from web novels.
In a statement on Douyin’s WeChat social media feed, the company said that Chow’s first series project is called “Jinzhu Yuye” and is currently a work-in-progress that could be delivered by May. He is understood to be working with other creators.

The news was carried by Hong Kong’s public broadcaster Rthk and in a Weibo social media posting by Chow mother. She died on Monday from Lupus Erythematosus.
Chow (aka Chow Hoi Mei and Zhou Hai-mei) claimed to be of ethnic Manchu descent. Ashe was Miss Hong Kong pageant participant in 1985 and moved into entertainment as both a singer and actress.
Her early years were attached to Hong Kong’s leading broadcaster Television Broadcasts (Tvb), starring in popular series Time Before Time, Breaking Point and Looking Back in Anger.
Later she switched allegiance and joined rival broadcaster Atv staying with it until 2001, before focusing her attention more fully on new opportunities in mainland China.
In 2008, however, she appeared in Tvb’s sequel to “The Academy” and “On the First Beat.”

When we think of the great director-actor pairings throughout Asian cinema history, at the top is Kurosawa and Mifune. But we can’t forget Kenji Mizoguchi and Kinuyo Tanaka or Wong Kar-wai and Tony Leung. But for many of us, we were straight up introduced to international action movies through the teamings of John Woo and Chow Yun-fat, chiefly The Killer and Hard Boiled. But the pair hasn’t worked together in more than 30 years – unfortunately, that may have been the last time.
Despite their place as one of the best director-actor duos in all of action, we only ever got five movies directed by John Woo and starring Chow Yun-fat, two of the most recognizable figures of Hong Kong cinema. As the 77-year-old Woo recently told HK01 (via Yahoo!), “We are getting older and it would be hard to find the right script…[But] I still want to be like...

He's back.
John Woo, one of the true maestros of action cinema, has returned to U.S. shores after 20 years to make another Hollywood movie. He left to make movies in Asia after the 2003 dud "Paycheck," but two decades later, he's at the helm of the Christmas-set thriller "Silent Night," starring "For All Mankind" actor Joel Kinnaman. "Those who have been missing Woo's masterful touch on action will likely find plenty to embrace here," /Film's review states, and even if the film never reaches the highs of his previous work, it's exciting to have him back in this mode again at 77 years old.
After all, we're talking about one of the most influential directors of the 20th century, here.

Known for his usual cool, Chow Yun-Fat gives an uncharacteristic performance in this 80s fish-out-of-water romcom set in New York's Chinatown. But rather than struggling for air, he is shark-like in what is a standout comedic performance as a troubled good-guy-gone-rogue opposite Cherie Chung in a film that oozes 80s bravado.
An Autumn's Tale is screening at Five Flavours
Jennifer (Chung) moves from Hong Kong to New York to study and be closer to her upwardly mobile boyfriend Vincent (Danny Bak-Keung Chan). She is to initially stay with a distant relative, Samuel (Chow), supposedly something of a ‘figurehead' in the US. But this supposedly idyllic trip to the Big Apple is very quickly brought down to earth. While Samuel might have been ambitious in Hong Kong, in New York he is another waiter with drink and gambling problems. He struggles to keep hold of money and lives in a ramshackle apartment building,...

Michael Chow is meant to be in Riyadh. But as drones spell out his name in the sky above Saudi Arabia’s capital, heralding the Oct. 5 opening of the latest outpost of his eponymous restaurant, the charismatic restaurateur, artist and bon vivant is in his Los Angeles home, grounded with a positive Covid-19 test. He is in good spirits nonetheless. “My name is Gatsby,” Chow says with a laugh, invoking the name of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s tragic hero, known for hosting extravagant parties but not necessarily attending them. “When he gives a party, they always turn up.”
Of course, Chow, 84, has long been known for his hosting prowess, with more than five decades of feeding the A-list legions of Hollywood, fashion, art, politics and beyond at his Mr. Chow restaurants. Now numbering seven locations, his empire launched with a London spot that opened in 1968, followed by Beverly Hills in...

Have you ever asked yourself why football is so popular in the media all around the world? British heritage? Not really, considering that commonwealth countries generally prefer cricket. Because of its massive wealth and marketing strike force? Probably, but it can as well be considered as the consequence of it. No. It is far simpler: football is politics. Football is gathering all our modern societies’ nonsense: inequality, hopes, unfairness, unpredictability, and fast-food joys. And beyond its light entertainment disguise, “Ola Bola” is definitively a political film.

Political is the plot since in all respects, it emphasizes societal issues of the modern Malaysia. Indeed once should not forget that Malaysia was not even a country prior to 1964, it is made of very distinct communities and that it has enjoyed almost unintentionally a formidable growth in the 80s surfing on the leftovers of the Four Asian tigers.

"Art & creativity is something that is very important to him. It's what makes us human." HBO debuted the official trailer for a documentary film titled Aka Mr Chow (or a.k.a. Mr. Chow), a profile of the famous restaurateur. This recently premiered at the 2023 Telluride Film Festival and it will play on HBO/Max later this month. "Meet the man behind the name." The film is a vibrant portrait of the artist, actor, and famed restaurateur Michael Chow. You may know his restaurants, but most have probably never eaten at them - they're very fancy, exclusive places. His restaurants are located in London, New York, Beverly Hills, Miami, and Las Vegas. With his signature circular glasses and mustache, Michael Chow (born as Zhou Yinghua in 1930s Shanghai before moving to London) is an exuberant force at the crossroads between eccentricity and sophistication. Now in his 80s, but vibrant as ever,...

Hong Kong star Chow Yun-Fat, attending Busan International Film Festival where he has been named Asian Filmmaker of the Year, talked about the challenges facing Hong Kong cinema at a press event today.
When asked about the current state of Hong Kong films, the star of iconic movies such as The Killer and A Better Tomorrow said: “Mainland China has a lot of requirements so our scripts must go through many different departments. We have many restrictions now so it’s difficult for Hong Kong filmmakers. But the mainland China market is huge, so we have to find some solution to work there.”

Feted in Busan this week as the Asian Filmmaker of the Year, Hong Kong superstar Chow Yun-fat bemoaned censorship in China for its impact on the film industry.
“We have a lot of censorship requirements in mainland China. Scripts must go to many departments. So, we need [to portray] clear situations in scripts. Honestly, we will try our best to make movies with Hong Kong spirit. In the 1980s people watched a lot of Hong Kong films. I’m proud,” said Chow at a press event at the Busan International Film Festival on Thursday.
“After 1997 [the year when Hong Kong ceased to be a British colony and was returned to China] a lot of things changed. We have to pay attention to our government. Otherwise, it will be hard to get the money to make movies. The Mainland market is so huge.”
Insisting that he is “just an ordinary person,” Chow spent much of the rest of the event emitting a joyful and relaxed aura, discussing his love...

Stephen Chow was the closest Hong Kong Comedy ever had to an international star. Breaking out with “Shaolin Soccer” and “Kung Fu Hustle” he suddenly stepped back to focus on direction. Prior to this was a huge back catalogue of his work that apart from sporadic releases was hardly seen in the west. Eureka Entertainment start to rectify that with the upcoming release of “From Beijing with Love” his Bond Spoof from 1994. Comedy however can be a very acquired taste and what makes them roar in Kowloon may not necessarily do so in Kansas. So time to take a trip back to the nineties and experience Stephen Chow in his prime.

The 40th anniversary 4K-cut of Stop Making Sense continues to make a lot of cents.
In the wake of the Talking Heads A24 re-release racking up the biggest grossing Imax live event ever with close to $641K, we’re hearing that showtimes for this weekend’s Imax run are already selling out.
Move over, Barbie (which is getting her first release in Imax this Friday for one week), because you’re going to have to contend with the Talking Heads in the house, not Ken.
Originally the re-release of the 1984 Jonathan Demme concert film was bound to run in around 150 Imax auditoriums, now it’s 300. That’s a nice appetizer for any pop rock aficionado waiting in the lobby for the Taylor Swift: Eras Tour concert to start. Stop Making Sense expands again next Friday, Sept. 29.

Stacchi's “The Monkey King” is a computer-animated and English language adaptation of the classic novel “Journey to the West” from the Ming Dynasty. It was elected as the closing film at the 22nd New York Asian Film Festival in July 2023 and later released worldwide on Netflix. Also credited as the executive producer, Hong Kong filmmaker and comedy superstar Stephen Chow who played the Monkey King in his two-part “A Chinese Odyssey” (1995) and directed “Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons” (2013) is certainly no stranger to the Monkey King film series.

Eiichiro Oda, One Piece creator and executive producer on Netflix’s upcoming adaptation, says that he changed his mind about whether his long-running manga could get a live-action adaption after both technology advances and seeing Shaolin Soccer.
In a rare interview with The New York Times, the Japanese artist behind the best-selling manga in history discusses how Stephen Chow’s 2001 Hong Kong sports comedy inspired the live-action take and how he ensured his upcoming series — which follows a stream of live-action manga adaptation misses — would be satisfactory to fans.
“When I first started, I didn’t think there was any point in drawing a manga that could be remade in live-action,” Oda said. “But when I saw the movie [Chow’s] , it felt like a manga-esque world brought to life.”

It’s not every day a director works on a series with a built-in legion of multigenerational fans ready to binge each episode and dissect every scene. Deborah Chow, who helmed all six episodes of Disney+’s “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” experienced exactly that.
The limited series, which Chow also executive produced, centers on the titular Jedi (Ewan McGregor) and former mentor to Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader (Hayden Christensen) and is set between the two “Star Wars” trilogies. Having directed two episodes of “The Mandalorian,” Chow was well equipped to immerse herself in Obi-Wan’s world The series follows Obi-Wan as he is forced out of Jedi retirement to rescue a 10-year-old Princess Leia (Vivian Lyra Blair) from Imperial forces.
In an interview with Variety, Chow details the making of the series, working alongside original cast members and newcomers and the unparalleled experience of contributing to such a long-lasting and beloved franchise.

Commercial cinema especially in Southeast Asia has always followed the money. A successful movie at the box office would inspire countless imitations until the well would run dry and takings decline leading to the next cycle. “A Better Tomorrow” upon release in 1986 really hit the popular culture zeitgeist, creating an iconic figure in Chow Yun Fat, a whole new subgenre in Heroic Bloodshed and inspired a wave of copycats and inspirations. One of the more mature inspirations was a double bill by Taylor Wong in “Rich and Famous” and “Tragic Hero” released the following year. Headlined by then ubiquitous Chow Yun Fat, it would strive for epic status telling its story over two features.

With an audience that knows every nook and cranny of the Star Wars franchise, executive producer and director Deborah Chow took on a monumental challenge by agreeing to continue the story of Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) and Darth Vader (Hayden Christensen) in between the prequel and original trilogies. Development of the McGregor-led project had already become its own saga, beginning in 2017, with Stephan Daldry tackling a stand-alone Obi-Wan film. In 2019, when the feature evolved into a limited series for Disney+, Chow stepped in for Daldry, shepherding the project through numerous rewrites and Covid restrictions until cameras finally rolled in spring 2021.

The 16th century literary classic Journey to the West is the mother of all Chinese fantasy. The mythological saga has spawned countless adaptations in various media across Asia and beyond, from the cult late ‘70s Japanese TV series to Peking Opera, videogames, graphic novels and a stage spectacle with a score by Blur frontman Damon Albarn and design elements by Gorillaz illustrator Jamie Hewlett.
Prominent among the innumerable film versions is the 2013 blockbuster Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons, directed by Stephen Chow. A similar livewire action-comedy energy infuses Netflix’s The Monkey King, a children’s animated feature based on the sprawling novel’s most popular strand, on which Chow serves as executive producer.

This story about “Obi-Wan Kenobi” first appeared in the Limited Series/Movies issue of TheWrap’s Emmy magazine.
“Obi-Wan Kenobi” seems like the kind of no-brainer, easy layup, slam dunk that is conceived quickly and executed even more quickly. We’re talking a limited series from Disney+ and Lucasfilm that followed the titular Jedi in the lonesome time between the prequels and 1977’s “Star Wars: A New Hope.” But it was not so fast and easy. In fact, for years, McGregor had no idea if he’d ever play the wise mentor again. “There was a constant social media noise about another Obi-Wan project, and I was constantly asked in every interview that I ever did,” he said. “Eventually I would answer truthfully and I would say, ‘Yes, I would totally be up for playing Obi-Wan Kenobi again.’”

Sin City- one of the most popular places for stag nights and hen nights, is the setting for many Hollywood films. However, one of the most famous – and, quite frankly the funniest of all these movies is The Hangover. The film brings to life all the worst fears of those men heading to Vegas to celebrate their (or their friend’s) upcoming nuptials… and the fears of every wife (or wife-to-be) waving off their other halves for that final celebration. Let’s face it, sticking to online casinos seems to be a lot safer… right?
But where would the fun be in that? Here, we bring you all the funniest scenes of The Hangover series, that made us very glad they didn’t…

This Star Wars article contains spoilers for Obi-Wan Kenobi.
While Lucasfilm may be hitting lightspeed with three new Star Wars movies and several more TV series, there’s one show that, at least for the moment, will be left behind. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has confirmed that a second season of Obi-Wan Kenobi starring Ewan McGregor won’t be in the works any time soon.
“That is not an active development,” Kennedy revealed to Variety during Star Wars Celebration Europe 2023. “But I never say never, because there’s always the possibility. That show was so well-received and [director] Deborah Chow did such a spectacular job. Ewan McGregor really wants to do another. Everybody’s all hands on deck with what we’re doing right now, as you can see by what we showed everybody [at the Celebration]. We’ll turn our attention to that again maybe down the road.”

Two new performers — Dandelion and Mantis — will make their “Tms” debuts this week alongside our reigning champion, Doll. Two of these three costumed crooners will be forced to unmask, unless the panelists decide to ring their “Ding Dong Keep It On” Bell for the third and final time this year. Recall that they previously saved Medusa in round one and Gargoyle in round two.

In our U.S. Top 50, it was quite the week for short-form channels. Nine of the top ten finishers in our all-American ranking operate primarily on YouTube Shorts.

As a predominantly long-form channel, Cocomelon – Nursery Rhymes has become an outlier in our U.S. Top 50. But even as other long-form channels struggle to keep up with the deluge of short-form viewership, Cocomelon is holding strong at the front of our American ranking.
