A judge recorded not guilty pleas Wednesday for a former Marine who is charged with murder in the strangulation deaths of two women found in northwestern Indiana and is suspected of killing five others. During an initial hearing that lasted eight minutes, Lake County Magistrate Kathleen Sullivan explained to Darren Vann that the informal pleas in the strangulation deaths of 19-year-old Afrikka Hardy and 35-year-old Anith Jones would become formal in 20 days unless he or his attorney takes action. Vann, 43, had refused to speak during an initial hearing in the Hardy case a week earlier and was cited for contempt.

Investigators in two states are reviewing unsolved murders and missing person reports after the arrest of an Indiana man who police say confessed to killing seven women and hinted at more victims over a 20-year span. But determining whether others have fallen prey to Darren Vann, 43, a former Marine convicted of sexual assault in Texas in 2009, could take years, a former high-ranking agent at the FBI's Chicago office said. Some of his alleged victims may have been prostitutes or people who had fallen through society's cracks, which could also complicate the investigation. "It does make it difficult. It indicates he...

*full disclosure: an online screening of this film was provided by Midnight Releasing. Directors: Maurizio del Piccolo, Roberto del Piccolo, and Trevor Gittings. Writer: Roberto del Piccolo. Cast: Andy Callaghan, John Doughty, David Drew, Alice Knapton, Nasif Malik, Maddie Moate, Danny Shayler, Paul Tonkin, and Vicky Vatchers. Tagline: "Survival depends on the right choice." The Hounds is an indie co-production. This title is both British and Italian, with the film shot in the United Kingdom. The Hounds deals with criminal activity and the cliched camping-trip-gone-wrong scenario. However, Roberto del Piccolo's writing style keeps much of the film's premise in mystery, while the trio of directors keeps everything visually interesting. The Hounds is a competently shot film that will satisfy most indie horror fans. The film begins with two stories. The main story involves three friends, Sarah (Maddie Moate), Jake (David Drew) and David (Paul Tonkin), on a road trip.
