Created by David Farr and based on a 1993 novel by John le Carré, the first season of The Night Manager saw Hiddleston taking on the role of Jonathan Pine, the night manager of a luxury hotel in Cairo and a former British soldier. Pine is recruited by Angela Burr,...

Indian streamer Disney+ Hotstar is planning a major push into animation content for adults.
The push follows the success of Graphic India’s 3D animation “The Legend of Hanuman,” the third season of which debuted earlier this month to a critical and audience reception that the streamer is happy with. The series is derived from ancient Indian mythological epic “The Ramayana.”
“There are so many stories around around ‘The Ramayana’ that are remaining to be told. We feel that this is a franchise, which has lots of storytelling left, and we want to really scale up and build this world in an exciting manner,” Gaurav Banerjee, head, content, Disney+ Hotstar and HSM (Hindi-language speaking markets) Entertainment Network at broadcaster Disney Star, told Variety.
Disney+ Hotstar is teaming with Graphic India again for another adult animation series, which will be unveiled within the next six months, but it is coy about specific details at the moment.

John le Carré was born to be a spy…and one of the premier espionage novelists of the last century. “Betrayal fascinates me,” Le Carré (real name: David Cornwell) tells Oscar-winning documentarian Errol Morris in The Pigeon Tunnel, a fascinating film about the life of the late bestselling author, whose credits include The Spy Who Came in From the Cold and Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. The biggest revelation is that, for a man who crafted tales of international government truths and lies, his most astounding story was his own. Courtesy of Penguin “What came out, was how much he was driven by his relationship with his own father,” says Simon Cornwell, who, with his brother Stephen, co-produced this look at their dad. Le Carré’s father was a charming, and at times violent, confidence man for whom “Life was a stage where pretense was everything,” the novelist recalls. “Of truth and conviction,...

John le Carré, whose bestselling novels about the chilly world of Cold War espionage were the basis for a long series of popular film and TV adaptations, has died of pneumonia. He was 89.
Le Carré’s literary agency, Curtis Brown, announced his death on Dec. 13 via Twitter. The beloved storyteller, whose real name was David Cornwell, was a favorite among writers and screenwriters for the naturally cinematic touches and propulsive narratives he delivered over a career that spanned a half century and 25 novels, the most recent of which was published in 2019, three days after his 88th birthday.

Over the past few years television has become an arena that is overflowing with period dramas and historical explorations. However, the difference in recent years is that many viewers are no longer as content to see, and showrunners are no longer as satisfied make, straight period dramas. To set themselves apart, today’s shows that play in the past are expected to offer some commentary on modern society, or to frame the past in a way that it hasn’t been seen on screen before.
Starz’s “The Spanish Princess” is set in Tudor times, characterized by extravagant costumes, dramatic speeches and sweeping proclamations. Yet showrunners Emma Frost and Matthew Graham set out with a different approach to the period by placing the fiery Catherine of Aragon and her diverse court in the center of the action.

John le Carré’s 1983 espionage tale “The Little Drummer Girl” follows an English actress named Charlie who is recruited by an Israeli spymaster and ends up working as a double agent. But the story revolves around more than spycraft, dissecting morality, power, love and how to forge a path through the patriarchy. In order to turn the 430-page novel into AMC’s six-part limited series, writers Michael Lesslie and Claire Wilson worked closely with le Carré himself, as well as his sons Stephen and Simon Cornwell, co-chiefs of the Ink Factory.
Shifting Narrative Perspective
Since le Carré’s version of the story is “very, very rich” and “stuffed with details,” as Lesslie points out, much of the adaptation process was about being “selective” in what sequences to keep intact and which to condense, remove or shift around. “One of the interesting things about it is it’s a very modern...

In bringing to life The Little Drummer Girl, AMC’s six-part adaptation of John Le Carré’s classic thriller, the producing team felt it was best not to confine the shoot to a soundstage.
Florence Pugh, who plays the lead role of Charlie, said that commitment created some compelling sequences for the actors to portray. In a panel session closing out AMC’s portion of TCA summer press tour, Pugh described a sequence where she and co-star Alexander Skarsgård, meet and do a walk-and-talk around the Acropolis in Athens at night. The production was the first to capture the grounds of the actual ancient landmark on screen.

It has been five years since Elysium, the last time Jodie Foster headlined a movie on camera, and for her return she has chosen another futuristic tale, Hotel Artemis — a rather odd duck of a project. In this dystopian crime thriller, she is considerably aged up and known only as The Nurse, a take-all-prisoners woman who for 22 years has run the Hotel Artemis, an Art Deco-looking building in 2028 Los Angeles whose penthouse serves as an emergency hospital for criminals who are “members.” Getting into the Hotel Artemis is harder than entering CIA headquarters, and you have to have a special microchip in your arm to pass through the tightly secured building. It is a very exclusive club indeed, and Foster’s Nurse doesn’t allow exceptions or rules to be broken.

Global Road has unveiled the first trailer for Hotel Artemis, the crime thriller toplined by Jodie Foster and This Is Us‘ Sterling K. Brown. The pic, written and directed by Drew Pearce, centers on Foster’s The Nurse, who runs a secret, members-only, near-future Los Angeles hospital for criminals. It also featured a loaded ensemble that includes Sofia Boutella, Jeff Goldblum, Brian Tyree Henry, Jenny Slate, Zachary Quinto, Charlie Day and Dave Bautista.
The plot revolves around an armed robbery that goes wrong for Brown’s Waikiki and Henry’s Honolulu, the latter of whom is injured and needs attention at the hotel, where strictly enforced rules even among the criminal set has kept it a going concern for years. Waikiki’s valuable prize from the heist though eventually draws the biggest bad guy to the Artemis to get it back.
