The name Harry Hole may sound like a joke to a lot of English speakers, but Norwegian author Jo Nesbø has managed to build a bestselling series of crime novels around the character – whose last name is meant to be pronounced as “Hoo-leh.” There have been thirteen books in the Harry Hole series to date, with the seventh one having previously been brought to the screen as the 2017 film The Snowman… which, despite having Tomas Alfredson at the helm, Martin Scorsese on board as a producer, and a strong cast that included Michael Fassbender as Hole, did not turn out well. (You can read our 3/10 review Here.) Now Nesbø is seeking redemption for his character by teaming with Working Title and the Netflix streaming service for a series called Jo Nesbo’s Detective Hole, which is set to star Tobias Santelmann (The Last Kingdom) as Hole. Deadline has unveiled an image of Santelmann in character,...

Netflix and Working Title have found their Harry Hole.
German-Norwegian actor Tobias Santelmann (The Last Kingdom) will play the lead in the Jo Nesbø adaptation, which will be officially titled Jo Nesbo’s Detective Hole.
Santelmann is joined by Joel Kinnaman (Altered Carbon, The Suicide Squad) playing Tom Waaler and Pia Tjelta (Made in Oslo, State of Happiness) as Rakel Fauke. The casting has been announced in the past few minutes at the iconic restaurant Schrøder in Oslo, Norway, which also serves as Harry Hole’s ‘second home’ in the novels.
Created by the much-loved Scandi crime fiction author, Nesbø’s Harry Hole is a whodunnit serial killer mystery led by the famed anti-hero. Underneath the surface, it is a nuanced character drama about two police officers – and supposed colleagues – operating on opposite sides of the law. Throughout the first season, Harry goes head-to-head with his long time adversary and corrupt detective Tom Waaler.

Half a century ago, Universal Pictures hoped to carry over the success of its entries in the short-lived disaster film vogue to naval combat movies, stirring some box office if few other rewards via dullish “Midway” and “Gray Lady Down,” which felt like bloated retro B-movies. Having revived the disaster genre with trilogy “The Wave,” “The Quake” and “The Burning Sea,” their Norwegian producers seem to be going the same route with “The Arctic Convoy,” about the perilous voyage of a freighter delivering supplies to Allies on the eastern front during World War 2.
The fact-inspired story’s central situation is compelling enough. But director/co-writer Henrik M. Dahlsbakken (of recent biopic “Munch”) delivers a middling effort too sparing of excitement to satisfy action fans, and without the character depth or involvement to score as drama instead. Spoiler Alert: Do not keep reading if you have not finished Season 5 of “The Last Kingdom.”
“The Last Kingdom” is coming to an end.
Although a two-hour movie followup is currently filming, Season 5 of the Netflix historical drama wraps up the story of its central character, Uhtred of Bebbanburg, played by Alexander Dreymon, in a very satisfying way — as the sins of Uhtred’s past collide head on with his present and the future of England.
Uhtred finds himself in an unusual place at the beginning of the season — unable to be with Aethelflaed (Millie Brady), the woman he loves and the Lady of Merica, he presides over a Mercian border town at her request. But strange things are in the air, as Brida (Emily Cox) is determined to have her vengeance once and for all and the enemies of the House of Wessex are gathering.

Tragedy strikes forty years after moving to Sweden and the loss is so profound that Trond (Stellan Skarsgård) discovers it difficult to continue on as before. When your life is changed so fully and abruptly, a desire to “pick up the pieces” very often pales in comparison to simply leaving them behind. Gone was his tether to the city and connection to his possessions. Gone was his sense of home itself. So he decides to leave and find another in the desolate countryside of Norway. Trond escapes an identity he’d spent decades cultivating to embrace the quiet of isolation instead. This is how he’ll survive the changing of the millennium alone. Rather than be reminded of who was missing during the inevitable celebrations, he’d go missing himself too.
Like everyone in Hans Petter Moland’s latest film Out Stealing Horses, Trond doesn’t want pity nor judgment.

"The way we carried on, something had to go wrong." Magnolia Pictures has released an official trailer for Out Stealing Horses, a Norwegian drama about a man thinking back on his life and his adolescence. The film originally premiered at the Berlin Film Festival last year, and is finally getting a release in the Us this summer after opening in Norway originally more than a year ago. Stellan Skarsgård stars as a man living alone quietly in Norway, who meets a new neighbor that he recognizes as someone from his youth. This takes him back to the summer of 1948 when he was 15 years old, and the events that summer that changed his life forever. Also starring Bjørn Floberg, Tobias Santelmann, Jon Ranes, and Danica Curcic. This is an excellent trailer for this unique Norwegian film, more than just a coming-of-age story. I caught this at Berlinale and quite liked it,...

Haugesund, Norway — Hans Petter Moland’s sweeping literary adaptation “Out Stealing Horses” put in a dominant showing at Norway’s Amanda Awards on Saturday night, placing first with a collected five awards, including best Norwegian film.
Celebrating its 35th edition this year, the Norwegian industry’s top film prize helped kick off the Haugesund Film Festival and was broadcast live on national TV.
Moland’s generation-spanning outdoor drama very quickly took the lead at Saturday night’s ceremony, collecting additional awards for cinematography (Rasmus Videbæk), original music (Kaspar Kaae), best supporting actor (Bjørn Floberg), and best director.
The film premiered to strong notices at this year’s Berlin Film Festival, where cinematographer Rasmus Videbæk won the Silver Bear for Outstanding Artistic Contribution. In his Berlinale review, Variety critic Guy Lodge called the Amanda winner a “loving adaptation” and credited the film’s “lush visual storytelling against its characters’ desolate interiors.

Given that Hans Petter Moland just spent a few years remaking his own Euro-thriller as a commercially viable Liam Neeson vehicle, you might assume the prolific filmmaker is pivoting to a global audience. Not so fast. His latest feature — a tender and meditative drama that screened in Competition at the Berlinale less than 24 hours after “Cold Pursuit” opened in theaters — is nothing if not distinctly Norwegian. And, like so many of that country’s finer things, it may prove too particular for closed-minded audiences on the other side of the Atlantic.
Adapted from an acclaimed novel of the same name by one of Oslo’s most famous authors, “Out Stealing Horses” is as inextricable from its setting as the streams that run through it, the logs of timber they ferry across the Swedish border, and the violent Nazi history that’s embedded on either side of their shores. New films by Agnieszka Holland, Agnes Varda and Isabel Coixet have been added to the official lineup of the upcoming Berlin Film Festival, along with special screenings of directorial debuts by British actor Chiwetel Ejiofor and “Narcos” star Wagner Moura of Brazil.
The Berlinale added 11 titles to its competition slate Thursday, representing countries such as China, Norway, Mongolia and Israel. Of the 18 competition titles selected so far, eight are directed by women, including festival opener “The Kindness of Strangers,” by Danish director Lone Scherfig.
Holland’s eagerly anticipated “Mr. Jones,” starring James Norton and Vanessa Kirby, will have its world premiere in Potsdamer Platz. The politically charged film centers on the real-life Welsh journalist Gareth Jones (Norton), whose reporting uncovered a deadly famine in Ukraine in the 1930s.

We’ve officially come full circle. Point Break arrived in 1991 with more cheese than a Green Bay Packers game and ten years later a fresh generation got to enjoy an ambiguous cops and robbers romp that moved the same basic plot from ocean to streets with The Fast and the Furious. It’s probably an obscure connection at best, but the cinematographer of that unofficial remake, Ericson Core, just happens to now be the man to bring a brand new version of the original story to life as his sophomore directorial effort. This time the names are mostly the same—screenwriter Kurt Wimmer realized “Utah” works better as a nickname than given surname—and the waves make a return too even if they aren’t quite as important.
I know this is sacrilege to say, but Kathryn Bigelow’s cult classic dripping in nostalgic testosterone is the perfect property for a big-budget remake.

When your father is a god, your life is bound to be pretty interesting. As a result, it is never less than astonishing how often the story of Hercules ignores the rich source material, transplanting the demigod to whatever environment is currently in vogue with diminished results. Twice this year, we were treated to variant interpretations of the Greek myth with vastly different results. Coming in second and by far the inferior of the two, Brett Ratner’s Hercules is one of the weakest films of the year. Once more one wonders how Ratner keeps getting hired since clearly his limited directorial vision has been spent.

Chicago – I empathize with Dwayne Johnson and simultaneously don’t. Most people never get rich and famous once, let alone twice. Sure, it’s hard to re-brand people from the wrestling superstar you once were into the dramatic action star you’re trying to become, but your past is forever immortal.
Rating: 2.5/5.0
Like Jackie Chan wants to be viewed as a dramatic actor instead of a funny karate man, so too does Dwayne Johnson want to drop his wrestling image as The Rock and be taken seriously as a real actor. The problem is he’s all over the place. It’s hard to be Hercules when you’re being remembered as campy in films like “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” and the upcoming “Journey 3: From the Earth to the Moon”.
This isn’t having actor’s range. Having real range is Charlize Theron successfully branching out with a challenging role in “Monster.
