Lithuanian filmmaker Saulė Bliuvaitė’s Toxic, a coming-of-age teenage tale, secured this year’s Work in Progress prize at Meeting Point Vilnius (Mpv), the annual audiovisual industry event that takes place during the Vilnius International Film Festival, Kino Pavasaris.
The award lands the filmmaking team a €5,000 cash prize from the Lithuanian Film Centre,

Emilija Škarnulytė’s hypnotic documentary zooms into the science of uranium and radioactivity, as well as cold war politics
Occupying the liminal space between a geological excavation and speculative realism, Emilija Škarnulytė’s hypnotic documentary effortlessly moves between the micro and the macro. Zooming into a 3D-configuration of uranium ore, the film’s opening cuts to X-ray-esque renderings of radioactive household objects, all cast in an eerie shade of sickly green. These abstractions soon give way to something seemingly concrete yet equally mysterious: the camera plunges underwater, bringing us face to face with the remains of a 1950s uranium mine in Poland, once dug out in secrecy under the Soviet Union. Slithering through the wreckage is a water python, whose glistening presence serves as a kind of cosmic counterpart to the exploitation of natural resources.

Producer Elisa Fernanda Pirir is leaving Norway’s Mer Film to set up her production company Staer based in Tromso in northern Norway.
Collaborators in the new venture include co-owner Kristine Ann Skaret, a documentary expert from Stray Dogs whose credits include Villagers And Vagabonds and Aswang; and executive producer Jim Stark, the US producer who has credits including co-producing Jim Jarmusch’s Down By Law and serving as one of the executive producers of Triangle Of Sadness.
Staer will work with a mix of Scandinavian and international filmmakers.

Industry showcase to run virtually due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (Kviff) has unveiled the projects that will be showcased during its Eastern Promises industry strand, which is taking place online for the first time due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Some 41 film projects will be presented across industry strands: Works in Progress; First Cut+ Works in Progress; Docs in Progress; Works in Development - Feature Launch; and Eurimages Lab Project Award.
Projects will be presented to industry across three days, from July 8, with the most promising titles receiving awards worth a total of €165,000.
