Director Savanah Leaf’s debut feature presents an honest picture of an intelligent and decent mum in recovery struggling to regain her life, played with natural flair by rapper Tia Nomore
Here is a deeply felt social-realist movie performed with integrity and calm by west coast rapper and musician Tia Nomore making her acting debut. Writer-director Savanah Leaf is herself making her feature directing debut, having developed this project from a short film made with Taylor Russell. Leaf is a former music video director and, London-born, competed in the 2012 London Olympics as a volleyball player and so, remarkably, becomes the first Team Gb graduate to make a film for the ultra-hip studio A24.

Exploring themes which range through motherhood, class and race, BIFA nominated debut feature Earth Mama from Savanah Leaf is a stunningly quiet but hard hitting film. The young filmmaker has built upon her 2020 documentary short The Heart Still Hums, co-directed by Taylor Russell, and her own lived experiences with an adopted sister to create a world which absorbs every part of you. The camerawork in Earth Mama offers surreal expressionistic moments juxtaposed with raw documentary-esque storytelling and Leaf’s forceful authorial voice confidently allows the stunning images of her characters and the Bay Area locations to often say more than is contained in the subtle dialogue. Featuring a captivating debut performance from Tia Nomore (who has also picked up a Best Lead Performance BIFA nomination), the characters of Earth Mama also serve as a love letter to the women and individuals let down by the very systems supposed to protect and guide them.

Filmmaker Savannah Leaf’s journey toward making Earth Mama, her feature debut, was not a linear one. The seeds of the new A24 release—about a young single mother in circa-2000s Oakland, dealing with a late-term pregnancy while simultaneously trying to extract her two older children from foster care—reach back to Leaf’s own experience gaining an adopted sister when she was 16, the same age as her new baby sister’s birth mother. Fascinated by this mirror version of herself, the idea nevertheless percolated for years while Leaf pursued a career as an Olympic volleyball player, representing Great Britain in 2012 in London.
From there came the documentary short The Heart Still Hums, which likewise provides an experiential glimpse into the lives of women caught up—in various ways—in the foster care and open adoption systems. But the goal was always a narrative feature. So now comes Earth Mama,...

When Savanah Leaf turns 30 in November this year, she will have already notched a number of professional titles few people could dream of possessing, including both “lauded filmmaker” and “Olympic athlete.”
While those two pursuits may sound different, for the British-born Leaf, who makes her feature directorial debut with the enthusiastically received A24 drama “Earth Mama” a decade after playing volleyball for Great Britain at the 2012 London Olympics, they’re really not so far apart.
Leaf’s first feature, which IndieWire’s Ryan Lattanzio hailed out of Sundance as a “sublime” drama that “defies all cliches,” follows Gia, a young Black mother whose son and daughter from an all-but-nonexistent father are in foster-care limbo while she recovers from drug addiction. As Gia (played by first-time actress Tia Nomore in a stunning performance) makes her way through the various requirements of reunification while also being heavily pregnant with her third child...

One of the most accomplished directorial debuts of the year thus far, Olympian-turned-director Savanah Leaf’s Earth Mama premiered at Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and was also selected as Opening Night of New Directors/New Films. Starring Tia Nomore, Erika Alexander, Keta Price, Doechii, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Bokeem Woodbine, Dominic Fike, the film follows Gia, a pregnant single mother pitted against the system, fighting to reclaim her family. Ahead of a July release, A24 has now released the first trailer.

The summer movie season might be best known for its big-budget blockbusters and franchise sequels, but there’s a notable benefit for indie film lovers as well: the films that premiered at Sundance begin to open in theaters. The next few months will see several festival circuit hits open in arthouses, but few are more anticipated among cinephiles than “Earth Mama.”
Savanah Leaf’s directorial debut, which follows a single mother struggling to navigate the welfare state with her third child on the way, was widely seen as the arrival of a bold new cinematic voice on the indie film circuit.
