Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival has selected 18 participants for the 2023 edition of its Emerging Producers scheme, which it has launched this week at Sarajevo Film Festival.

Vienna-based sales company Square Eyes has acquired Tomasz Wolski’s Polish animated documentary “1970,” which picked up the Special Jury Award at this year’s Swiss doc fest Visions du Réel.
The stop-motion animated pic, which is screening at the Krakow Film Festival, chronicles the increasingly violent efforts by Poland’s communist leaders to end widespread demonstrations over rising prices of food and other everyday items.
Square Eyes also recently added Chloé Galibert-Laîné and Kevin B. Lee’s German-French documentary work “Bottled Songs 1-4,” a collection of shorts that follow the directors’ investigation of online jihadist propaganda and how media-savvy groups like Isis make effective use of stylistic devices drawn from Hollywood blockbusters.

“What is the meaning of this?” asks a disgruntled man, rake in hand, as a silent Guido Hendrikx, camera on shoulder, observes the pensioner tending to his front lawn. It’s a simple enough question, but one that has no easy answers, or indeed any answer at all, in the Dutch filmmaker’s prying, suburban curio A Man And A Camera.
The bemused, slightly put-out gardener receives no reply from his unknown, mute interlocutor, and whether inquisitive or accusatory, this initial interrogation – echoed in later one-sided exchanges – adequately reflects the knife-edge tone of a documentary, by turns intriguing, amusing and disconcerting, that exists on distinct plains. Copenhagen International Documentary Film Festival (Cph:Dox) has revealed its line-up of competition titles for 2021, set to run April 21 to May 2.
The programme includes films that focus on the dominance of tech giants, new democratic movements, decolonization and climate change among other topics.
The competition programmes consist of 64 titles with 47 world premieres, nine international premieres and six European premieres. In total, 58% of the titles (37 films) are directed by one or more women. This increases to 66% when including films co-directed by male and female directors.
