John Bain’s Search Engine Films has acquired Canadian rights from Edyson Entertainment to the Discovery selection following its world premiere on Friday.
Pat Mills stars in his feature directorial debut as an irresponsible adult who bluffs his way into a job as a high school counsellor.
The development comes only one day after Andrew Herwitz’s The Film Sales Company licensed world sales rights to Edyson.
Also starring in the dark comedy are Zhara Bentham, Eleanor Zichy and Tracey Hoyt.
“We set out to make a movie that really captured Pat’s wonderful, idiosyncratic voice but the feedback we’ve been getting on a commercial level has been genuinely exciting,” said producer Alyson Richards.
“The number of people who have come out in support of this film has been wonderful but when we were approached by John Bain to partner up, it was a dream come true.”...

Edyson Entertainment has closed a deal with Andrew Herwitz’ Film Sales Company for world sales rights to Guidance, which received its world premiere in Discovery last night (Sept 5).
Pat Mills wrote and stars in his feature directorial debut about a self-delusional, alcoholic former child star who lies his way into a high school guidance counsellor job.
Zhara Bentham, Eleanor Zichy and Tracey Hoyt also star in the dark comedy.
“Guidance is funny and irreverent but also has a big heart,” said Herwitz. “There is so much great material in the film, that whoever buys it will be able to cut a great trailer. I am confident this is one buyers and ultimately audiences will go for.”
Producers Alyson Richards and Ed Gernon launched Toronto and Los Angeles-based Edyson Entertainment and cut a first-look deal with Content Media in July 2013.

The Toronto International Film Festival expanded their lineup today, announcing a batch of homegrown films that will walk the red carpet in September. And set for the Discovery slate is "Guidance," the feature debut by Pat Mills, who wears a variety of hats in bringing his dark comedy to the big screen. Writing, directing and taking the lead role in the film, "Guidance" follows a mid-30s former child actor whose life is spinning out of control. He's been diagnosed with skin cancer, he just got fired from a recent acting job, and things look like they can't get any worse. He winds up landing a job as a high school guidance counselor, but even then, it's just another step in a downward spiral that will lead to a ridiculous crime. Having previously shown two shorts at Tiff, organizers and programmers see lots of potential in Mills, as "Guidance" will...

Often it feels like there are not enough ghost stories based horror films these days, but then when you think about it we’ve had Insidious, Sinister and The Conjuring just to name a few. I’m not sure why I feel there needs to be more but this could be a sign that things need to be shaken up a bit. Saying that though I’ll be reviewing Soulmate soon which is a good old-fashioned ghost story that gets so much right, so most importantly these films just need to be good. Haunter looks to add a little something different to the mix with the question, do ghosts realise they are actually dead?

Hider in the House: Natali Turns To Young Adult Thrills
Abandoning the perverse beauty of scientific mutation as last exhibited in his 2010 film, Splice, Canadian director Vincenzo Natali switches genre gears with a vantage point experiment on the haunted house thriller in Haunter. Reteaming with screenwriter Brian King, who wrote Natali’s sophomore film, Cypher, their latest collaboration feels akin to those curious live action young adult Disney films from the 1970s and 80s, with strong comparison that could be drawn between performances here as one could easily see Carroll Baker in the Michelle Nolden role and Bette Davis as Stephen McHattie, except without anything resembling thrills or intrigue.
In 1986, Lisa (Abigail Breslin) and her family are mysteriously killed, doomed to repeat the events of their last day of their lives within the house where something sinister seems to have happened. While Lisa’s parents (Michelle Nolden and Peter...

Haunted house-fueled movies are nothing new. The Amityville Horror, Poltergeist, Paranormal Activity and The Conjuring all trapped, terrorized or traumatized friends and families in their own homes with supernatural forces. The upcoming Haunter shreds those conventional beats by following 16-year-old Lisa Johnson (Abigail Breslin), a ghost in the past spooked by a living teenager, Olivia (Eleanor Zichy), from the present day. Together, they must piece together the mysterious circumstances behind Lisa and her family’s deaths before Olivia suffers a similar gruesome fate.
“It’s an interesting movie because it’s not a live girl being haunted by someone who is dead,” offers Breslin during a break from filming Haunter. “It’s a dead person being haunted by someone who is alive. In the beginning of the movie, Lisa kind of knows what is going on. She’s very stoic and goth and she becomes determined to discover what happened...

Vincenzo Natali (Cube) is the director behind the supernatural thriller Haunter. This film was developed from Brian King's (Night Train) script. Also, Haunter had its World Premiere at the South-by Southwest Film Festival in March of this year (Austin, Texas). And, the film stars Stephen McHattie (Pontypool) and Abigail Breslin (Zombieland). The film's first trailer reveals a little more from the film's storyline. Haunter is developed with a reverse plotline, in which a ghost realizes that another character is not actually haunting her. But, the other character, Olivia (Eleanor Zichy), is actually alive and the protagonist, Lisa (Breslin), is dead. However, Lisa has a tale to tell Olivia. And together, they attempt to track down a serial killer, called the Pale Man (McHattie). The Pale Man, in the clip, has other, more sinister plans for Olivia, though. Distribution house IFC Films has picked up this film for distribution in North America.

I know what you’re thinking – another haunted house movie? And to that I say “Yes. Hush, there is a reason we’re on to a fifth Paranormal Activity movie.” Now here’s where Haunter is going to be different. Haunter is told from the ghosts’ perspective, and these spirits aren’t so keen on being dead. In fact, teenage Lisa (Abigail Breslin) and her entire family aren’t quite aware that they’re haunting their own house until it occurs to them that they’re reliving the same day over and over again. But once Lisa figures out that she was murdered, she reaches out to the teenage girl currently residing in her old room to stop her from suffering the same fate. Beetlejuice this is not; it doesn’t look like there will be any fun interdimensional bonding or ghost pranks going on between the teenage girls. Expect lots of jumpy shots of ghosts and...

It's over: The 2010-11 TV season as measured by Nielsen officially ended Wednesday night (May 25). It was a rough year for new series -- only a handful of first-year shows made it to a second season -- but a number of veteran shows had strong seasons, and a few in particular went out with a bang.
As for others, well, let's just say that it's probably a good thing they have the summer off to rejuvenate.
We've watched dozens of season and series finales over the past couple of months. Here are Zap2it's picks (in alphabetical order) for the best and worst of the bunch.
The Best
"Brothers & Sisters": As a season finale, it was excellent. All the major stories of the season were wrapped up with just a few small teases for the next season, and we got a fun wedding with a hilarious musical number by the men.

Skins - MTV Shows
Ok, so we have to admit we like a random music number now and again. But, that's pretty much all we liked about the "Skins" finale.
In the finale, we watched as the crew sorted out their various romantic entanglements over a season that saw them go from a tight-knit crew to a fractured one. Tony's (James Newman) sister Eura (Eleanor Zichy) took center stage in this episode by faking her own abduction in order to get her brother and friends to reunite.
The series fought several battles before it even premiered. First, fans of the UK version had very little hope that the show could capture the magic of the original and they were right. Then, the Parents Television Council targeted the series for its extreme amount of references to underage drinking, drugs and sexuality and we'd have to say they were wrong.

Well, it’s been about, oh, two weeks since Skins was the center of controversy, inspiring companies to pull sponsorship due to the show’s over-sexed underage content. Debuting January 2011, the new "Skins" is the North American version of the popular UK series of the same name.
